The charm of Robbie Williams

The charm of Robbie Williams

Spectatora day ago

What could it possibly feel like to be a sportsperson who gets the yips? To wake up one morning and be unable to replicate the technical skills that define you. To suddenly find the thing you do well absolutely impossible. Golfers who lose their swing, cricketers whose bowling deserts them, snooker players who can't sink a pot.
Stage fright – something both Robbie Williams and Cat Power have suffered from – is much the same. Williams took seven years off touring last decade because of it, which must have been devastating for someone whose need for validation is so intense that he has made it his brand. Chan Marshall, the American singer who performs as Cat Power, toured through hers, resulting in shows performed on stages in near-darkness, or that ended early or were undermined by alcohol and the other things that terror forced on her.
Both are now in their fifties, both still performing, both very consciously revisiting the past in their own ways, and you couldn't have got two more different performances. Williams, early in proceedings, announced his intention to be recognised globally as the King of Entertainment – Michael Jackson having already taken the title of King of Pop ('And you don't even have to come for a sleepover at my house!'). And truly, we were entertained.
Even the boring bits – and there were boring bits, usually played out on the video screens – were entertaining by the standard of the boring video bits at stadium shows. The only part that was truly misjudged was a singalong medley of covers – he'd just done 'Let Me Entertain You' and been joined on the chorus by 60,000 people, so he didn't need to get the crowd loose.
Better Man, the ape-as-Robbie biopic, has plainly resurrected him as an item of public interest after a period in which his appeal was becoming, Spinal Tap-style, a little more selective. 'Robbie fucking Williams. Back in stadiums,' he noted, and one wouldn't have predicted it even a couple of years ago. At heart it was a variety show: rock songs, singalong ballads, a load of jokes, a couple of set pieces and a pair of standards. Performing 'My Way' and '(Theme From) New York, New York' absolutely straight and with complete sincerity, gave away the lineage in which he places himself – and it's not next to Oasis. Obviously, he sees himself as an old-fashioned song-and-dance man, and he's a very, very good one – whether in end-of-the-pier or big-stadium mode.
At a press conference in San Francisco in December 1965, Bob Dylan was asked whether he thought of himself as a singer or a poet: 'Oh, I think of myself more as a song-and-dance man, y'know.' That is the sole point of connection between Williams and Cat Power; for while he ran into the spotlight, she stayed in the shadows: her songs at the Barbican had no hint of dance about them.
Her set, based on Dylan's 1966 tour with the Band (with an acoustic first half, then an electric second), has had writers asking why? Let's assume she just likes the songs, and if Bob Dylan is going to play them like this, why shouldn't she? But watching her expert band recreate what Dylan called 'that thin, wild, mercury sound' was a reminder that she could never hope to recreate the cultural force of Dylan going electric; that music loses its power shorn of context.
The trio of records that unveiled Dylan's sound – Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde – are one of the rare points in pop history where you can hear a style of music being invented as it is recorded: if it were made now, you'd call it Americana, a thrilling amalgam of country, folk and R&B played by kids who'd grown up on rock'n'roll. It is thrilling because you can still hear history being made. But repeating it 59 years later? This was the rock equivalent of watching a BBC2 documentary where Lucy Worsley stands in front of someone pretending to be Richard III and enquiring about a horse.
The songs with Robbie Williams's name attached to them are not as profound as those with Dylan's name attached to them. 'You think that I'm strong/ You're wrong/ You're wrong/ I sing my song/ My song/ My song,' will never win the nobel prize for literature. But the nakedness of Williams's neediness, and his complete awareness of his own limitations, is winning. Where Power has all but removed herself from her own performance, Williams's show is about one thing: him and only him. Not even the music. Just him.

Love Island boys unrecognisable before hair transplants in before and after pics

The series 12 Love Island stars are beginning their fame journey - but two of the boys hard to recognise in pre-villa pics before undergoing hair transplants Love Island stars Ben Holbrough and Harry Cooksley look unrecognisable in pre-villa pics, as both have revealed they've undergone a hair transplant. Ben, 23, underwent the treatment at the age of 22, just one year before heading into the Love Island villa, while 30-year-old Harry travelled to Turkey to have the procedure at 24. ‌ Both Islanders have played a huge part in the shows drama this series, despite only being in the villa for a matter of days. On the first night, Ben, who was coupled up with Shakira, was stolen by American bombshell Toni. This left Shakira with just 24 hours to form a connection with another Islander. ‌ She struck up a connection with Harry, who was originally coupled up with Sophie - who was brutally dumped from the villa on day 2. However, Shakira and Toni may struggle to recognise their partners in pics before their hair transplants. Before and after results for Ben can be seen in a video posted by 360 Hair Clinic, in Brighton. Before his appearance in the villa, the clinic posted a video of his journey explaining: "Ben's hair transplant journey was facilitated by us at 360 Hair Clinic, supported by our ongoing treatment plans and 360 Optimum Hair products to maintain thickness, strength, and natural-looking results." In a separate post, the clinic posted a six month update, in which Ben's dark hair could be seen getting thicker and fuller. "And as you can see on your screens watching Love Island, Ben's hair is looking better than ever," the clinic wrote. ‌ Harry on the other hand, travelled to Turkey around six years ago for his operation - which he called the "perfect experience." In a YouTube video from the clinic documenting his journey, the star said: 'It was a perfect experience for something that I really wanted to have done and I'm very glad that I found EstePera.' Showing off the before and after results, Harry looked completely unrecognisable with no hair. ‌ It looks like it's set to be another dramatic night for Harry tonight as he finds out Blu and Shakira shared a kiss. It's Dejon who spills the tea, as he tells his friend: 'You know he (Blu) kissed her (Shakira)?' A shocked Harry then replies: 'No he didn't…I don't believe what I'm hearing.' Harry then asks Shakira about the kiss with Blu before telling her: 'All that matters is I want to pursue things with you.' ‌

American tourist who'd never left the US comes to UK and is instantly let down

Sean Miller, a comedian from New York, is one of the participants of the new Travel Virgin Show, which takes people abroad for the first time. He touched down in London this week A 'travel virgin' who had never been out of his country before has been shocked and delighted in equal measure by the UK. Sean Millea is a 28-year-old living in New York City who had never been out of the US until earlier this week. He is in good company. By some estimates, around 23% of Americans have not traveled internationally, while a quarter of Britons have never boarded a plane or ferry to go on holiday abroad. Whether it's the cost and hassle of sorting out a passport (close to 50% of Americans don't have one currently, according to the Apollo Academy) that is putting people off, or the fact that they're quite happy at home, clearly travel is not for everyone. Stand-up comedian Sean had been content exploring the US, until he was given the chance to hop across an international border for the first time by Jetpac. The travel eSim brand has chosen several 'travel virgins' to star in its docu-series, hosted by Love is Blind's Benaiah. When it airs, it will see newbie travelers swept away on an all-expenses-paid journey to an exotic destination. The Mirror spoke to Sean the day after his arrival in the UK. He was standing amidst the hustle and bustle of Borough Market, digesting a laden pudding from the viral Humble Crumble and reflecting on a deeply disappointing first brush with British pastry. "The pork pie. My friend Marshall told me to get it. I didn't love that. It was sort of tasteless and hard to eat, you really need to put in muscle to get it open. It looked like a little castle. I did, however, like the Humble Crumble," Sean explained. "I also don't like the candy here. American candy is full of chemicals, which is why it tastes delicious." Sean was not opposed to the idea of travelling abroad, but given the demanding nature of his comedy career, he had never found the right time to do so. "I don't ever have money like that. I have been to Florida, California and Chicago, but I'm uncultured to anywhere outside of the US," Sean said. While he may have found the pork pies a little underwhelming, the American in London was excited to throw himself into the culture, having grown up on a string of British classics such as the Beatles, David Bowie and Shakespeare. Visits to the Globe and Abbey Road were ticked off on his first evening. In terms of vibe, "London feels like New York if you're not paying attention." When it comes to the actual travelling process, Sean found it to be a mixed bag. "I got a passport, a few months ago on a whim, and there was some visa thing I had to get. I ended up just tapping myself out of the airport, no questions asked. It was pretty smooth," he explained. "I did get scammed at a currency exchange. I got half my money back." The first episode of The Travel Virgin Show will go live on June 30. The company argues now is the right time for it, given the steady rise in travel since the coronavirus lockdowns, when people were pent up, unable to get away and desperate to get back out on the road. According to one recent poll, 76% of Gen Z and 72% of Millennials say they're more interested in travel than they used to be. And passport applications have surged by up to 38% in key markets like the UK, suggesting the appetite for exploration is stronger than ever. Aditya Goyal, CEO at Jetpac. "There's a huge group of people who are only now taking their first step abroad—and we think they deserve the same tools as anyone else. Jetpac is here to make that first time seamless, empowering, and unforgettable."

Mum shares Appleby haul with ‘Gucci sliders' & fake Chanel – as people say she'd ‘absolutely love Turkey'

Tens of thousands of visitors flooded into the historic market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, ahead of the festivities. Horsemen and women were seen riding their horses in the nearby River Eden as part of a long-held tradition. Amongst the visitors was also mum Sinead Smith who managed to drive home with a mega haul of cut-price knock-offs, including fake Gucci sliders for just a tenner - and more. Sinead, who is 28, has been going to the event ''every year'' and last week's festivities saw her bag numerous goodies. The mum shared the epic haul on TikTok, showing off knock-offs of the on-trend New Balance trainers for just £20 - around four times cheaper than the real deal. ''I bought everything on Sunday morning because they bring the prices down,'' Sinead explained in the video, adding that the trainers were originally going for £35. The mega haul also included stunning gym sets in sage and baby blue, which looked like a Lululemon fake. While the posh jacket alone would set you back more than £100, Sinead said she paid ''£70 for the lot''. Chuffed with the wallet-friendly finds, the bargain-mad mother also showed off knock-offs for Nike trainers that cost her just a tenner, a few pairs of ''Gucci sandals'' going for £10, as well as gold Louis Vuitton-style sliders. ''£25 - I paid a tenner for them,'' Sinead said. I've found the best little-known store for designer bargains - there's Gucci, Louboutins, Versace and more for cheap Meanwhile, the real ''star of the show'' was the ''matching'' Chanel knock-off purse. ''All weekend I'd wanted a version of this and I'd seen them but they were like £120, £110. ''I think the cheapest I seen was £70 and I thought 'It's not too bad but I still don't want to pay that for a fake bag'.'' Is it Illegal to Buy 'Designer' Dupes in Turkey? In Turkey, buying counterfeit goods is generally considered illegal. If you buy a counterfeit product for personal use, you're unlikely to be prosecuted against - unless your purchase involves a significant quantity or the intent to resell. Customs authorities have the power to stop and seize counterfeit goods entering or leaving Turkey. That means they can stop you upon your return home and seize any designer dupes you've bought on holiday. Luckily for the bargain hunter, who posts under the username @sineadsmithx1, she then spotted a man who was selling the bag for £60 - but her partner managed to bag the stylish purse for just £40. ''I couldn't believe it, it's absolutely beautiful and I love it.'' Pleased with the goodies she went home with, Sinead dubbed the horse hair ''dupe central''. ''There's about 100/150 stalls at Appleby. Something for everyone, it is great.'' 'You'd absolutely love Turkey' Sinead's bargain haul has clearly left many open-mouthed, as the video has racked up close to 200k views in just two days. More than 120 people flooded to comments, where one joked: ''I tell you what , you'd absolutely love Turkey.'' The popular holiday destination has long been regarded as the 'capital of fakes' among Brits looking to rock designer styles for the price of a coffee. A quick four hour flight could land you in a bustling market flogging 'Gucci belts' for £3 and Louis 'Fuitton' handbags for £20. Another visitor chimed in: ''There was some lovely stuff there just the rain was a downer.'' Someone else said: ''I never knew Appleby sells like clothes n that. Might have to go next year.'' ''Lovely stuff, I went to Appleby years ago and had an amazing time,'' a viewer penned. 5 A goat was seen on the back of a horse drawn cart during the annual horse fair Credit: Reuters
