Tennis-Shelton tops Tiafoe on sweltering night in Washington
Shelton blasted an ace on match point to seal the win and avenge his five-set loss to Tiafoe at last year's U.S. Open as the 22-year-old continues to make strides in his breakout season.
Hometown hero Tiafoe had the support of the energized crowd but lost momentum when he was unable to serve out the first set while up 6-5, leading to a tiebreak that Shelton dominated.
The second set hinged on a marathon game at 3-3, where Shelton pocketed a break thanks to a Taifoe double fault.
Shelton rode his huge lefty serve from there to grab the win and set up a semi-final meeting with either top seed Taylor Fritz or Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
"It was a tough one for sure but enjoyable nonetheless," Shelton told Tennis Channel.
"I love playing against Foe. Difficult guy to play against but playing him here in the U.S., especially being here in D.C., it was packed, it was a great atmosphere. I couldn't be happier."
Earlier, tournament lucky loser Corentin Moutet stunned Russia's Daniil Medvedev 6-1 4-6 4-6 in a wild match interrupted by an hour-long delay due to the threat of thunderstorms.
Moutet, leading 5-4 in the final set when they returned to the court, was hobbled by leg cramps but completed the upset in a final game that featured three double faults by Medvedev and a frantic match point.
The Frenchman fell on his back in relief after securing the victory as Medvedev threw his racket and proceeded to take out his frustration on several water bottles, drawing boos from the crowd.
"That is a great way to finish the match," said world number 59 Moutet.
"I was with my coach when we were up 5-4 and I said okay, I have to win the next game because my body cannot handle too much more."
Moutet will face Australian seventh seed Alex de Minaur, who was a 6-4 6-4 winner over Brandon Nakashima.
On the women's side, Canadian Leylah Fernandez and Emma Raducanu both overcame the stifling heat and their opponents to advance to the semifinals, setting up a potential rematch of the 2021 U.S. Open final that was won by the Englishwoman.
For that to happen Raducanu, who beat Maria Sakkari in straight sets on Friday, will have to best Russian Anna Kalinskaya.
Fernandez takes on third seed Elena Rybakina in the semis of the ATP and WTA 500 event on Saturday.

Cricket-Brook and Root give England scent of famous win
LONDON (Reuters) -Harry Brook and Joe Root shared a superb partnership of 195 to put England on course to complete a record run chase at tea on the fourth day of the final test against India at The Oval on Sunday. The touring side, needing victory to level the series, lead by 56 runs with four sessions left, and although Brook was out just before the interval for a brilliant 111, Root remained on 98 to keep England in control with Jacob Bethell on one. Brook, who survived on 19 when Mohammed Siraj caught him in the deep before stepping back on to the boundary cushion, struck two sixes and 12 fours to reach his 10th test century off 91 balls. Root provided the perfect foil, continuing his consistent form throughout the series, as the Indian bowlers struggled to get much movement under grey skies. Once past three figures, Brook launched an all-out attack, hitting Akash Deep for two fours in an over before attempting a third with a wild swing and skying a catch to Siraj. Brook's bat flew out of his hands as he played the stroke and he had to retrieve it before returning to the pavilion to a standing ovation from the crowd. Bethell got away with a reckless pull which landed just short of a fielder and Root survived a huge shout for lbw off Siraj, getting the decision overturned on review after he was given out by the umpire. India had the better of the morning session after England resumed on 50-1, dismissing Ben Duckett for 54 and Ollie Pope for 27 to leave the hosts wobbling on 106-3. Siraj's error, however, changed the momentum in a fluctuating game once again. The highest successful run chase at The Oval was England's 263-9 against Australia in 1902. United States Smash Women's 4x100m Medley Relay World Record
The United States smashed their own world record in winning the women's 4x100m medley relay world title in Singapore on Sunday. The Americans were victorious in 3min 49.34sec, beating their previous record of 3:49.63 from the Paris Olympics a year ago. Australia finished second in 3:52.67, with China third in 3:54.77. The American team of Regan Smith, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske looked dominant from the off and it was little surprise when Huske touched the wall to seal the win. "This is the best way to end the meet and I felt we had such a good opportunity with this stacked group of women closing it out in a relay like this," said Walsh. "We're going to put it all in the pool and we're going to leave Singapore with a smile on our face." The American mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team also set a new world record on the way to gold the previous night. Huske said that she knew her team also had a chance of cracking the 4x100m medley mark. "This is my favourite relay and there's no better way to end a meet, so I'm really happy," said Huske.
