Mahayuti govt reduces pre-poll crop loss relief
Mumbai: The Mahayuti govt has reduced the compensation it used to give farmers for crop losses due to unseasonal rains and other natural calamities. It has done this by rolling back an order hiking the compensation which was issued in January 2024 before the Lok Sabha and assembly polls in the state, reports Priyanka Kakodkar.
The hike was announced when the Mahayuti government was led by Eknath Shinde.
The directive to reduce the compensation and bring it back on par with Central government norms on relief was issued last week, just a few days after heavy rains extensively damaged crops in the state.
In 2024, the state had increased the amount of land which would get compensation from 2 hectares to 3 hectares.
It had increased the compensation for non-irrigated crops from Rs 8,500 to Rs 13,600 per hectare.
Compensation for irrigated crops was increased from Rs 17,000 to Rs 27,000 per hectare. And for horticulture and cash crops, it was increased from Rs 22,500 to Rs 36,000 per hectare. The compensation area and amount will now be reversed to the earlier rates. Also, subsidy shall be admissible only once for the entire season for compensation for damage to agricultural crops.
The new govt resolution (GR) issued says, "In view of the recent agricultural losses caused by unseasonal rains, drought and floods in the state, it has been decided to provide subsidy as per the instructions of the National Disaster Management Authority after a discussion in the cabinet meeting held on May 27th."

In order to provide for additional compensation, the state used to put in more money beyond the compensation given as per National Disaster Relief Fund norms. Compensation for calamities is paid through the State Disaster Relief Fund which receives 75% of its funds from the Centre and 25% from the state. "They promised higher compensation before elections and then rolled it back. This is cheating," said Rajan Kshirsagar from the Kisan Sabha.

China ramps up military pressure on Taiwan with 70 warships, 75 jets in may amid invasion threat
China increases the temperature around Taiwan (ANI) TAIPEI: Beijing sent two aircraft carrier strike groups and numerous warships to the waters both north and south of Taiwan last month, as noted by a Taiwanese security official, amid rising tensions between China and Taiwan, as reported by The Eurasian Times. From May 1 to May 27, around 70 Chinese vessels, including naval ships, were tracked from the Yellow Sea to the South China Sea, according to a security official who requested anonymity. In recent years, China has intensified the deployment of warships and fighter jets around Taiwan, pressuring Taipei to recognise its claims of sovereignty over the island, The Eurasian Times reported. China has not dismissed the possibility of using military force to bring Taiwan under its control, posing an ongoing threat of invasion to the island. "Their military activities and grey-zone operations have involved substantial deployments across the entire island chain, representing a strategy of comprehensive maximum pressure," the security official indicated, as quoted by The Eurasian Times. "On average, there have been between 50 to 70 naval and government vessels operating, along with hundreds of flights by different military aircraft, consistently engaging in harassment missions." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Some of the vessels travelled through the Miyako Strait into the Western Pacific Ocean for "long-range training, including integrated air-sea exercises," the official added, as cited by The Eurasian Times. On May 19, an additional 30 unnamed Chinese ships, lacking documentation or a port of registry, were spotted near Taiwan's Penghu archipelago in the Taiwan Strait and had been "intentionally deployed to intimidate," the official remarked. Taiwan's defence ministry noted that a total of 75 Chinese aircraft participated in three "combat readiness patrols" near the island during the month, as highlighted by The Eurasian Times. These actions by China were indicative of a "military expansion" effort aimed at controlling the "entire island chain and enhancing their capabilities," the official stated. Since Lai assumed office, China has conducted several large-scale military exercises in the vicinity of Taiwan, according to The Eurasian Times.

When Google's former CEO Eric Schmidt, whose company builds drones for Ukraine, suggested US Army to give away tanks, and ...
On June 1, 2025, Ukraine launched a sweeping drone offensive, codenamed Operation Spiderweb targeting Russian air bases housing nuclear-capable long-range bombers. Over 100 drones struck facilities across Russia, from Murmansk above the Arctic Circle to the Amur region, 8,000 kilometers from Ukraine. The operation, marked by explosions across multiple time zones, underscored the growing role of drones in modern warfare. Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative in Saudi Arabia, in November 2024, Schmidt urged the U.S. to rethink its military priorities, suggesting it replace traditional tank fleets with advanced drones. 'I read somewhere that the U.S. had thousands of tanks stored somewhere. Give them away. Buy a drone instead,' he said, citing Ukraine's success in using affordable drones to counter Russia's numerical and air superiority. Schmidt's advocacy draws from his leadership of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, which in 2021 concluded that AI would transform warfare across all domains. Building drones for Ukraine to take on Russia The attack highlights a strategic shift advocated by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt , who has emerged as a key figure in integrating AI-driven technology into military strategy. Schmidt, founder of the military startup White Stork, is developing AI-powered " Kamikaze drones " for Ukraine. These drones, designed to loiter and strike targets autonomously, can operate in GPS-denied environments, making them ideal for Ukraine's battlefield needs. Named after a bird common in Ukraine, White Stork's drones aim to counter Russian forces by destroying high-value targets like tanks, which Schmidt notes can be neutralized by a $5,000 drone despite costing millions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo In a 2023 Wall Street Journal op-ed, Schmidt called Kamikaze drones—costing as little as $400 and carrying small explosives—'the most important' innovation for defeating Russia and future adversaries. Ukraine's recent operation exemplifies this vision, showcasing how drones can strike deep into enemy territory, reshaping the battlefield. Since leaving Google in 2018, where he served as CEO from 2001 to 2011 and later as executive chairman of Alphabet, Schmidt has bridged Silicon Valley and the Pentagon, championing AI-driven defense solutions. His work with White Stork and his public statements signal a broader push for militaries worldwide to embrace autonomous technology as the future of warfare. AI Masterclass for Students. Maha govt seeks IT data to verify beneficiaries of Ladki Bahin Yojana
Mumbai June 3 (UNI) Amid allegations that hundreds of ineligible Mantralaya women employees are availing of the benefits of the Ladki Bahin Yojana scheme, the Maharashtra government has sought detailed information from the income tax department about women who have filed returns to ascertain their eligibility, sources in the state secretariat said on Tuesday. 'We have forwarded the request to the Finance Ministry to share the required tax payer data and ITR filed by women in the state,' said a senior tax official. The BJP-headed Mahayuti government with allies drawn from Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) and NCP (Ajit Pawar) launched the ambitious Ladki Bahin Yojana just before the 2024 assembly elections in which 2 crore 67 lakh women applied and an amount of Rs 7,500 was deposited in the account of every woman for about 5 months without any comprehensive verification. Post-polls, the ruling alliance led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a review of the scheme to identify ineligible beneficiaries leading to disqualification of nine lakh women from the Ladki Bahin Yojana scheme.
