Anti-dumping duties imposed on PET imports from China, Indonesia
The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) said this came after the conclusion of its months-long investigation into unfair trade practices.
The anti-dumping investigation, initiated on Aug 9, 2024, was conducted under the Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties Act 1993 and its associated regulations.
The ministry said the investigation concluded that PET from China and Indonesia had been entering the Malaysian market at prices below the domestic selling prices in the respective exporting countries, causing material injury to Malaysia's domestic PET industry.
'These duties will be enforced by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for a five-year period, starting May 7, 2025 and ending May 6, 2030.
'The imposition of these duties is expected to address the issue of unfair trade practices and provide relief to the domestic PET industry,' said MITI.
Interested parties, including local producers, importers, exporters, and trade associations involved in the investigation, may request access to the non-confidential version of the final determination report by submitting a formal written application.
The ministry added that the move underscores Malaysia's commitment to protecting its domestic industries from unfair competition and ensuring a level playing field for local manufacturers.

The meeting was held to discuss strategic investment opportunities in Malaysia, said Anwar, who is in town for the BRICS Leaders' Summit. Regarding the meeting, Anwar, who is also finance minister, said discussions touched on Embraer's potential investment in Malaysia, including collaborations with Malaysian airlines. "I emphasised the MADANI Government's commitment to strengthening the aviation industry ecosystem," he added. Malaysia also welcomes Embraer's involvement in the development of maintenance centres, pilot training, supply chains, and low-carbon aircraft innovation, in line with the MADANI Economy framework and the National Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030. Anwar said he also appreciated Embraer's interest in enhancing cooperation in the defence sector, which could improve the air mobility capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces. "The government is committed to ensuring that all forms of cooperation are translated into high-value job opportunities, technology transfer, and inclusive economic growth for the people of Malaysia," he added. A global aerospace company headquartered in Brazil, Embraer has businesses in commercial and executive aviation, defence and security, and agricultural aviation. The company designs, develops, manufactures, and markets aircraft and systems, providing services and after-sales support to customers.

RIO DE JANEIRO: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today held discussions with Brazilian aerospace company Embraer SA to discuss strategic investment opportunities in Malaysia. The prime minister, who met with Embraer president and chief executive Francisco Gomes Neto, emphasised the government's commitment to strengthening the aviation industry ecosystem through investor-friendly policies, local talent development, and high-impact technology partnerships. This is in line with the aspiration to make Malaysia a major aerospace hub, particularly in Asean, which has a highly-skilled workforce and an industry ecosystem which is robust and competitive. "Our discussions touched on the potential for Embraer to invest in Malaysia, including through collaborations with Malaysian airlines. "Malaysia also welcomes Embraer's participation in developing a maintenance, repair and overhaul centre, pilot training and supply chains, as well as low-carbon emission aircraft innovations, in line with the Madani Economy framework and the National Aerospace Master Plan 2030," said Anwar. Malaysia became a BRICS partner nation on Jan 1. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil grew by 14.6 per cent to RM20.35 billion in 2024, from RM17.43 the year before. This maintained Brazil's position as one of Malaysia's main trading partners in Latin America.
