RIO DE JANEIRO: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today held discussions with Brazilian aerospace company Embraer SA to discuss strategic investment opportunities in Malaysia.
The prime minister, who met with Embraer president and chief executive Francisco Gomes Neto, emphasised the government's commitment to strengthening the aviation industry ecosystem through investor-friendly policies, local talent development, and high-impact technology partnerships.
This is in line with the aspiration to make Malaysia a major aerospace hub, particularly in Asean, which has a highly-skilled workforce and an industry ecosystem which is robust and competitive.
"Our discussions touched on the potential for Embraer to invest in Malaysia, including through collaborations with Malaysian airlines.
"Malaysia also welcomes Embraer's participation in developing a maintenance, repair and overhaul centre, pilot training and supply chains, as well as low-carbon emission aircraft innovations, in line with the Madani Economy framework and the National Aerospace Master Plan 2030," said Anwar.
He said he also appreciated Embraer's interest in strengthening cooperation with the defence sector through initiatives that can enhance the Malaysian armed forces' air mobility capabilities.
The government, he said, was committed to ensuring that any form of cooperation would bring high-value jobs, the transfer of technology and inclusive economic growth for Malaysians.
Anwar is in Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders Summit today and tomorrow.
Malaysia's participation in the summit is as a BRICS partner nation and as Asean chair.
Malaysia became a BRICS partner nation on Jan 1.
Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil grew by 14.6 per cent to RM20.35 billion in 2024, from RM17.43 the year before.
This maintained Brazil's position as one of Malaysia's main trading partners in Latin America.

1st LD: Chinese premier calls on BRICS to be vanguard in advancing global governance reform

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Sunday that BRICS countries should strive to become the vanguard in advancing the reform of global governance. Li made the remarks when addressing the plenary session of "Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance" of the 17th BRICS Summit, calling on the bloc to safeguard world peace and tranquility, and promote the peaceful settlement of disputes. Leaders of BRICS countries attended the meeting, which was presided by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Li said at present, changes unseen in a century are unfolding at an accelerated pace, international rules and order are being severely challenged, and the authority and efficacy of multilateral institutions continue to wane. The vision of global governance put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping, characterized by extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, has been further demonstrating its contemporary value and practical significance, Li said. In face of growing conflicts and differences, it is needed to enhance extensive consultation based on equality and mutual respect; In face of deeply intertwined common interests, it is needed to pursue joint contribution through solidarity; In face of mutually beneficial development opportunities, it is needed to hold an open mind to seek mutual success and shared benefits, said Li. As the leading force of the Global South, BRICS countries should uphold independence and self-reliance, demonstrate a sense of responsibility, and play a greater role in building consensus and synergies, Li noted. The Chinese premier called on the group to hold fast to morality and justice, and seek fundamental solutions based on the merits of each issue. BRICS countries should also focus on development and bolster the drivers of economic growth, said Li, adding that they should actively spearhead development cooperation and tap into the growth potential of emerging sectors. Noting that China will establish a China-BRICS research center on new quality productive forces this year, Li also announced a scholarship established for BRICS countries to facilitate talent cultivation in sectors including industry and telecommunication. It is essential for BRICS countries to foster inclusiveness and advance exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations, Li said, calling on the countries to act as advocates for the harmonious coexistence of civilizations, striving to ensure diverse civilizations flourish together through mutual reinforcement. China stands ready to join hands with other BRICS countries to promote global governance in a more just, equitable, efficient and orderly direction, working collectively to build a better world, he said. The meeting adopted the Rio de Janeiro Declaration of the 17th BRICS Summit.

Malaysia Backs BRICS Call For Responsible AI Governance, ASEAN On Same Path

BUSINESS From Arul Rajoo Durar Raj RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6 (Bernama) — Malaysia has welcomed the BRICS Statement on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance, voicing strong support for a vision of AI that serves development over domination, embeds ethics, reduces inequality and respects human dignity. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia's own efforts, including the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap and the AI Governance Guidelines, reflect similar principles. "As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia is championing the establishment of an ASEAN AI Safety Network, a regional initiative to strengthen governance and capacity in this fast-moving domain,' he said during the Member State Intervention at the BRICS Leaders' Summit here today. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, cited the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement as a vital platform. "With the right investment and standards, ASEAN's digital economy could reach US$2 trillion by 2030. This is an opportunity we cannot afford to squander," he stressed. Underscoring Malaysia's commitment to inclusive growth, the Prime Minister said the future will be shaped by collective resolve. "Malaysia stands ready to work with BRICS and other partners for a fairer global economy, a more coherent digital future, and a multilateralism that delivers." Malaysia's active engagement in the global digital and AI governance reflects its broader vision of creating a balanced and inclusive international order, anchored in equity and shared progress, he added. Anwar also reiterated Malaysia's position on multilateralism, that is it is vital for global stability, shared prosperity and sovereign dignity. "For multilateralism to endure, it must do more than express common values. It must deliver tangible outcomes. It must respond to the realities of a world where markets are fragmenting faster than rules can adapt." Hence, he said Malaysia welcome BRICS' commitment to an inclusive, rules-based trading system.
