RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6 (Bernama) — Malaysia has welcomed the BRICS Statement on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance, voicing strong support for a vision of AI that serves development over domination, embeds ethics, reduces inequality and respects human dignity.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia's own efforts, including the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap and the AI Governance Guidelines, reflect similar principles.
"As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia is championing the establishment of an ASEAN AI Safety Network, a regional initiative to strengthen governance and capacity in this fast-moving domain,' he said during the Member State Intervention at the BRICS Leaders' Summit here today.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, cited the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement as a vital platform. "With the right investment and standards, ASEAN's digital economy could reach US$2 trillion by 2030. This is an opportunity we cannot afford to squander," he stressed.
Underscoring Malaysia's commitment to inclusive growth, the Prime Minister said the future will be shaped by collective resolve. "Malaysia stands ready to work with BRICS and other partners for a fairer global economy, a more coherent digital future, and a multilateralism that delivers."
Malaysia's active engagement in the global digital and AI governance reflects its broader vision of creating a balanced and inclusive international order, anchored in equity and shared progress, he added.
Anwar also reiterated Malaysia's position on multilateralism, that is it is vital for global stability, shared prosperity and sovereign dignity. "For multilateralism to endure, it must do more than express common values. It must deliver tangible outcomes. It must respond to the realities of a world where markets are fragmenting faster than rules can adapt."
Hence, he said Malaysia welcome BRICS' commitment to an inclusive, rules-based trading system.

Ringgit drops to 4.23 against US dollar as Trump's tariff remarks stir market anxiety

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — The ringgit closed weaker against the US dollar on Monday but traded better against major currencies, as traders and investors are observing the United States (US) tariff situation, an analyst said. At 6pm, the local note depreciated to 4.2310/2400 against the greenback from last Friday's close of 4.2180/2260. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid stated that the latest remark by US President Donald Trump on an additional 10 per cent tariff for countries aligning themselves with Brics has taken centre stage. On Sunday, US President Donald Trump was reported saying that any country aligning with Brics' 'anti-American policies' will face an additional 10 per cent tariff. 'This goes to show that the tariff fear seems to make a comeback as the 90-day pause period is coming to an end this week. 'The US Dollar Index (DXY) gained 0.03 per cent to 97.208 points (at time of writing). It seems to be risk-off mode at the moment,' Mohd Afzanizam told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the euro to 4.9647/9752 from 4.9675/9770 on Friday, appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9091/9155 from 2.9225/9282, and slightly advanced versus the British pound to 5.7563/7685 from 5.7601/7710 previously. The local note traded mostly higher against its Asean counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3096/3172 from 3.3114/3182 Friday, and marginally higher against the Philippine peso to 7.46/7.48 from 7.47/7.49 previously. However, it strengthened against the Thai baht to 12.9837/13.0173 from 13.0302/0609, and was flat against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.5/261.2 from 260.6/261.2 on Friday. — Bernama

Malaysia set to launch AI guidelines for media, PR and digital content creation

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's upcoming Guidelines for Responsible AI Communication will provide a critical framework to support professionals across media, public relations and digital content creation, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the guidelines are to complement the country's National AI Roadmap and uphold ethical, transparent and trustworthy communication practices as artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly shapes public discourse. Fahmi said technology must serve humanity, not replace it, and urged communication professionals to lead with purpose, guided by inclusive and transparent principles. "We live in an age where communication is borderless and increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence … even as machines evolve, one thing must never change - human ethics and judgment must lead," said Fahmi in his keynote address via video message at the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7) here today. Addressing the forum virtually from Geneva, where he is leading the Malaysian delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20), Fahmi said Malaysia's Asean chairmanship this year demands leadership anchored not just in authority, but also in vision, empathy and ethics. He praised KLIP 7's theme "Impactful AI, Social Media Communication and Online Education" as highly relevant, noting the transformative role technology plays in how information is consumed and communicated. The minister also highlighted the Venice Pledge, endorsed by the Global Alliance for Public Relations, as an emerging global benchmark for ethical, human-led AI communication. "I'm proud to note that the president of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), Jaffri Amin Osman, and, of course, a Malaysian, is part of the Global Alliance board and has played a key role in shaping the Venice Pledge," he said. He also congratulated the recipients of the Asean PR Excellence Awards. Since its inception in 2019, KLIP has been a pivotal global conference for PR and communication leaders, professionals, as well as academics from Asean and beyond, fostering the sharing of the latest industry insights. This year, KLIP will feature international, Asean as well as national keynote speakers, panel discussions and interactive sessions, providing valuable insights and networking opportunities for attendees. -BERNAMA
