BCCI breaks silence on shifting IPL 2025 final from Kolkata to Ahmedabad: 'The decision was...'
Kolkata's Eden Gardens was originally scheduled to host Qualifier 2 and the final. However, the venue was changed during the IPL Governing Council meeting on May 20, when BCCI officials decided to alter the schedule based on weather forecasts. As a result, Hyderabad also lost out on hosting Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, with Chandigarh stepping in.
According to a Cricbuzz report, BCCI justified its decision based on weather data for IPL cities. Kolkata had a reported 65% chance of rain, while Ahmedabad showed only 3%.
The decision drew political backlash, but BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia broke his silence on Wednesday, saying: "The decision was never political. We banked on scientific material and inputs. There was no rain forecast in Ahmedabad at the time of the GC."
BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla, too had spoken much on the same lines ahead of the final, dismissing reports and speculations suggesting a 'political agenda' behind shifting the venue.
"There is no politics in the decision involving the shift in the venue of the IPL 2025 final. If the IPL hadn't been suspended for a week and the tournament had happened according to the initial schedule, the final would have been held in Kolkata, and the playoffs would have been held in Hyderabad. After the schedule was changed, the weather aspect was considered. Even broadcasters urged the venue shift to avoid losses," he told ANI.
In hindsight, BCCI's conviction proved right. While Kolkata remained dry on Sunday, it was lashed by thunderstorms on Tuesday evening, coinciding with the second innings of the final. Had the match been held there, the result would likely have depended on the reserve day.

Aiden Markram Backs Opening Role, Set To Open In Decider Against Australia To Fit In Power-Hitters For Proteas
South Africa captain Aiden Markram has confirmed he will keep opening the batting in the T20I side to make room for the team's big-hitting middle-order players. With the three-match series against Australia locked at 1-1, the deciding clash will take place in Cairns on Saturday. IPL Form Boosting Confidence Markram thrived as an opener during the 2025 IPL, scoring five half-centuries in 13 innings for Lucknow Super Giants at a strike rate of 148.82. However, his last T20I score over fifty came in October 2022. "Looking at the players we have, opening suits me best," Markram explained. "We've got dangerous hitters in the middle order, so it makes sense for me and Ryan Rickelton to start things off. Batting in the powerplay is always exciting, and we aim to set a strong platform." Also Read: Rohit Sharma's 'Har Baar Thodi Retirement Lunga' Quip Goes Viral In Rishabh Pant's Independence Day Post Partnerships and Standout Performances In this series, his opening stands with Rickelton have yielded 12 and 34 runs. While number three batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius is still searching for form, Dewald Brevis' unbeaten 125 in the second T20I has been a huge boost for South Africa's batting lineup. Off-Spin Option When Needed Markram also offers part-time off-spin and has even opened the bowling in certain matches, including dismissing Travis Head in the second game. 'Bowling is a feel thing,' he said. 'With how hard the ball travels these days, I'm not always eager to bowl, but if conditions suit, I trust my instincts.' Turning Around a Poor Series Record South Africa has won just one of their last nine bilateral T20I series, something Markram wants to change. 'The bowlers have been consistent, but now it's time for the batting group to click as a unit. We want to put on a big score and finish this series strong,' he added. The stage is set for a high-stakes decider as the Proteas aim to seal a morale-boosting series win.

India's Asia Cup 2025 Squad: Shubman Gill In, Rs 13 Crore IPL Star Misses Out
The Indian squad for the Asia Cup T20, to be announced on Tuesday, could present a tricky challenge for Ajit Agarkar's selection panel, with some tough calls expected. While Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill's place and designation in the squad remain a hot talking point, the position of Rinku Singh in the 15-member squad is also under scrutiny. Rinku became the toast of the nation a few years back when he hit five consecutive sixes off a Yash Dayal over to win an IPL game for Kolkata Knight Riders and had since been looked upon as a designated finisher in the Indian team. However Rinku's career graph has seen a bit a decline since he failed to make it to the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup (he was on stand by). A low-key 2024 IPL, where he faced only 113 balls, and a similar 2025 season (134 balls) hinted at a reduced role. Interestingly, in 2024, it was Gambhir who was the mentor and chief strategist of KKR. The manner in which the erstwhile think-tank chief of KKR used Rinku was indicative that the Aligarh southpaw's role in his scheme of things was very limited. Going by the fight for each batting slot, one can't say with a degree of certainty that Rinku is an automatic choice going into the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year. But if only Asia Cup T20 is factored in at the moment, Rinku's position looks a bit untenable at the moment. If all are fit and available, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (batter-keeper), Tilak Varma, skipper Surya Kumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are automatic selections in top-five. Now with Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, two players with proven IPL records are back in the mix, the selectors will have to make some compromise with regards to one or two slots. And this is pretty clear that at least in this Asia Cup, both Gill and Jaiswal wouldn't be in the same squad till Abhishek and Sanju are automatic choices. "We often hear people saying, one should pick so and so but no one would be able to definitively tell us 'in place of whom'? Shreyas Iyer has 600 runs at a strike-rate of 180 but he bats in top four. Where is the place for him. Even as you include Shubman as he is flavour of the season, where do you cut corners," a former national selector told PTI. "You can't disturb your top five right now and also pick Shubman. And if you pick Shubman now, obviously the Test captain and IPL team captain won't sit out." "So where do you make the compromise? I only see Rinku's spot being iffy as he isn't required as much some of the top order batters. And mind it, we aren't even talking about Jaiswal," the former selector, who also played for India, said. The logic could be even if Rinku is compromised, there would still be a Shivam Dube (as Nitish Reddy is unlikely to get fit) and a Jitesh Sharma (second keeper), who could well play that finisher's role. Not to forget both are multi-dimensional players -- Jitesh can keep and Shivam can slip in an over or two as and when required.

Shubman Gill's Arrival Can Threaten 13 Crore KKR Star's Asia Cup Spot: Report
Last Updated: Rinku Singh's spot in India's Asia Cup squad is reportedly doubtful, as selectors could favor 'multi-dimensional' players like Shivam Dube, or Test captain Shubman Gill. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star Rinku Singh's place in India's 2025 Asia Cup squad isn't guaranteed and likely to face heavy scrutiny from the national selectors, according to a report by news agency PTI. The report doesn't say that Rinku would be left out completely, but cites his dip in game-time and form over the past year to explain that he could be used to make way for someone like Shubman Gill. It is also conjectured that the team could look for 'multi-dimensional' players like Jitesh Sharma (who can keep wickets) and Shivam Dube (who can bowl a bit) to play the finisher's role if Rinku is not picked. Until 2023, Rinku was among the best lower-order batters in the IPL. He struck 474 runs at a strike-rate of just under 150 in that season, allowing him to be fast-tracked into the T20I and ODI sides as a finisher, where his performances continued to be good. As KKR's top-order shone in 2024, his game time reduced and he was simultaneously overlooked in the main squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, leading to a fall in his stocks. His form in IPL 2025, after becoming KKR's most expensive retention, was better than 2024 but not eye-catching: 206 runs at a strike-rate of 153.73. 'We often hear people saying, one should pick so and so but no one would be able to definitively tell us 'in place of whom'? Shreyas Iyer has 600 runs at a strike-rate of 180 but he bats in top four. Where is the place for him. Even as you include Shubman as he is flavour of the season, where do you cut corners," a former national selector told the agency in the report. 'You can't disturb your top five right now and also pick Shubman. And if you pick Shubman now, obviously the Test captain and IPL team captain won't sit out. So where do you make the compromise? I only see Rinku's spot being iffy as he isn't required as much some of the top order batters. And mind it, we aren't even talking about Jaiswal," the former selector added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
