Jack Doohan: Alpine F1 driver target of threats with security tightened before Franco Colapinto handover

West Australian10-05-2025

The fallout from Australian F1 star Jack Doohan's disastrous debut season has taken a dark turn as revelations surface that Team Alpine have had to implement private security for the youngster after continual threats.
As Alpine moved to elevate Franco Colapinto to replace Doohan after the Aussie suffered a puncture on lap one and another DNF in the Miami Grand Prix, serious concerns about personal security and genuine threat levels have been raised
F1 photographer Kym Illman has spoken to
GP Fans
and revealed Doohan's family and close friends were concerned for his safety.
Alpine confirmed that Doohan will be replaced by Franco Colapinto for the next five races at least by Colapinto, whose supporter base allegeedly took things into their own hands and made sovial media threats the beseiged driver.
Following Doohan's axing, Illman said via Instagram that the threats toward the Doohan had been received from a small minority of Colapinto's fanbase, and were serious enough for Alpine to employ extra security.
'He was receiving all sorts of threats online so much so that he had around-the-clock security in Miami and was planning on keeping that security for the Brazilian Grand Prix,' Illman said..
'It was plain to see by those close to the Aussie that those threats weighed heavily on him.
'People had discovered his personal email address and were sending email threats which resulted in Jack, his girlfriend and even his father holding real concerns for their safety in Miami and on top of that, Jack's sleep was affected.
'I'm certain Franco wouldn't be endorsing any of that behaviour from what is a minority of his fanbase.'
Doohan's departure also follows the news that Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes has resigned from the team with immediate effect, and executive Flavio Briatore will step up to cover his duties.
On Doohan's demotion to reserve driver, Alpine said: 'As part of an on-going assessment of its driver line-up, the team has made the decision to rotate one of its race seats for the next five rounds of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship.
'BWT Alpine Formula One Team therefore announces that Franco Colapinto will be paired with Pierre Gasly from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, ahead of a new evaluation before the British Grand Prix in July.
'Jack Doohan remains an integral part of the team and will be the first-choice Reserve Driver for this period of time.'

Brisbane super-gran qualifies for Hyrox World Championships

It is hard enough to complete a Hyrox circuit but 62-year-old Australian Sue Rogers is not afraid of the difficult. The Brisbane mother-of-three and grandmother-to-five is in Chicago to compete in the world championships of the viral fitness craze which has surged in popularity thanks to its addictive races. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Australian grandmother to compete in world championships of new fitness craze. Think of Hyrox like an Olympics for everyday gym-goers. There is a series of eight 1km runs split by eight different fitness stations including walking lunges, sled pulls and pushes, wall balls and burpee broad jumps. It is not for the faint-hearted but Rogers smashed the event when she competed in Brisbane in March this year. She qualified third fastest for her age group (60-64) and is one of 10,000 people at the championships this week. She is representing Australia and proving age is just a number. 'My five grandchildren, one on the way, they do push-ups with me,' she told 7NEWS. 'They say, 'Where's nana? Oh yeah, she's exercising'.' Rogers has reasons beyond fitness to keep her moving. 'My 'why' is to keep mobile and strong right into my more mature years — I don't know, 100-plus,' she told 7NEWS. 'I do it for the enjoyment, the feeling, the connection. 'Community and connection are my highest value, it floats my boat.' Rogers also coaches at BFT Everton Park where the 'weapon' is getting others ready to enter their first Hyrox event in Sydney at the start of July. '(Rogers is) so positive, her energy is very infectious,' one person in her class said. Rogers will race on Friday.

2026 Nissan Patrol Nismo leaked

The 'Y63' Nissan Patrol has yet to go on sale in Australia, but the Nismo variant is close to being released in the Middle East. These photos seen here were published by user Nissan111Patrol on Instagram, and show the Patrol Nismo being unloaded in the United Arab Emirates. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Supplied Credit: CarExpert The Nismo features a redesigned front fascia with a blacked out, full height grille that stretches from the bonnet down to the front splitter. Red trim is used on the grille frame, front splitter, side skirts, wing mirror caps, D-pillar garnish, and rear diffuser. On the inside, the centre of the front seats is clad in red leather, while the main section of the dashboard has been retrimmed with faux suede. Supplied Credit: CarExpert The V6T badge on the door indicates it will be powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6. In standard models this engine produces 317kW and 700Nm. If the previous generation 'Y62' Patrol Nismo is anything to go by, the new version should have a few more horses to its name. It's possible the Nismo could use the uprated 335kW version of the engine that's employed by the Infiniti QX80, the Patrol's twin-under-the-skin. The previous Petrol Nismo also featured unique alloy wheels, and retuned suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers for a sportier drive. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Supplied Credit: CarExpert Although the 'Y63' Patrol was unveiled in September 2024, it is currently only produced in left-hand drive for the crucial Middle East market, as well as North America, where it's sold as the Armada. Standard versions of the new Patrol (above) will land Down Under during the second half of 2026, with Australia gaining the honour of being the 'first right-hand drive market' to receive the new generation model. Australian testing to play critical role in global BYD model development

Australia will play a vital role in the development of BYD models sold around the world, not just locally, says the Chinese automaker. Testing of models such as the BYD Shark 6 ute – which was extensively evaluated in Australia ahead of its local release in January 2025 – is designed to ensure local suitability, but models not sold here such as the Yangwang U8 large SUV from BYD's luxury brand have also been spied testing on Australian roads. Ford is the only automaker that still develops vehicles from the ground up in Australia, but several others including Kia and more recently GWM and Mitsubishi also conduct local chassis tuning in and for this market. However, Australian input was critical for the plug-in hybrid Shark 6 dual-cab – a competitor for the top-selling, locally designed and engineered Ford Ranger sold around the world – just as it has been for other rivals including the upcoming Kia Tasman, which was repeatedly seen testing here ahead of its mid-year release. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Yet BYD Australia product lead Sajid Hasan told CarExpert the local arm's evaluation and engineering signoffs will be used to finetune suspension and other settings for the automaker's global products. 'It's important that we do local confirmation testing, rough-road durability, hot weather, climate, tow testing – all those kinds of things are being done to make sure that the products are suitable for Australian customers,' Mr Hasan said. 'For models like that [Shark 6], particularly off-road focussed vehicles, we're in a fortunate position that in Australia, our roads represent 80 per cent of the world's variety of roads. 'So we are a very critical market for right-hand drive development, and the kind of tuning and testing that gets done here is used in other areas of the world.' The development of the Shark 6 included engineers from BYD's Chinese headquarters joining Australian testing teams, with a particular focus on suspension as part of a broader vehicle assessment program. Supplied Credit: CarExpert BYDs sold in Australia – including the upcoming Atto 2 small SUV and the brand's first seven-seat SUV, the Sealion 8 – will ride on locally tuned suspension instead of the 'soft' or more comfortable chassis tunes preferred by Chinese customers. BYD says the feedback will influence right-hand drive models sold in countries like Japan, the UK and Cyprus – where BYD was launched on May 28 – as well as playing a role in left-hand drive vehicle development, too. The popularity and variety of SUVs in Australia – where they accounted for more than half of all new vehicle sales in 2024 – makes local testing even more helpful for BYD HQ in China. 'It also gives us kind of an access, like a gateway, into the global development,' Mr Hasan told CarExpert. 'For certain models, like large SUVs and off-road focused SUVs, we're a very important market because of our market size and demand for that type of vehicle.' MORE: Everything BYD
