US beef off the menu despite trade deal, says sandwich boss

British retailers are unlikely to start importing US beef despite the UK's trade deal with Donald Trump, the boss of a sandwich-making giant has said.
Dalton Philips, the chief executive of Dublin-based Greencore, which supplies all major UK supermarkets, said customers were concerned about US food standards.
'Our customers are retailers,' he told The Telegraph. 'I think they will do a lot of in-depth research before they start introducing proteins where there may possibly be some anxiety from the consumer, and we work very closely with them.'
Sir Keir Starmer last week announced a 'landmark economic deal' with the US, controversially giving both countries reciprocal market access to each other's beef.
While the Prime Minister insisted there would be no lowering of food standards to accept products like hormone-treated beef, Mr Philips suggested customers may still be reluctant.
He said: 'You have got to go at the speed of the consumer. I think it's way too early to say where the consumer is on this.'
The sandwich maker does not source any food products from the US currently, Mr Philips said.
Instead, Greencore buys half its products in the UK, a small amount in the Far East and the remainder in Europe.
The UK-US trade deal has outraged British beef farmers and follows months of tractor protests in Westminster over inheritance tax changes that they warn risk putting family farms out of business.
Mr Philips, himself the son of a farmer, said: 'There's a lot of uncertainty out there at the moment, and there's a lot of concern from British farmers, quite rightly.
'British food resilience is absolutely key. We need to produce more in the UK, and eat more from the UK.'
While he would not comment directly on the Government's tax changes, he said: 'We need more farming in the UK, not less.'
Mr Philips' remarks come after Greencore on Thursday confirmed a £1.2bn takeover of its rival Bakkavor.
The deal will create a £4bn-revenue empire marrying the sandwich maker supplying Britain's meal deals with the ready meal giant behind pizzas, desserts and salads in supermarkets such as M&S, Tesco and Waitrose.
Greencore said the two companies had agreed the terms of an acquisition after reaching an agreement in principle in April.
Mr Philips said the company hoped to take a bite out of the restaurant market by offering a wider range of ready meals targeting families who feel they cannot justify the cost of eating out.
He said: 'If you're a family of four going out for dinner in the UK, it's crazy to think you could be at £160 quite easily. That's a lot of money. There is definitely an opportunity there.
'I think more and more we're going to see, as budgets get squeezed, people look into these big discretionary outflows and say, 'Can we do it differently?' And of course, you can do restaurant-quality food at home.'

McKinley Nelson, 72, of Winters, recently picked up a pizza for his wife at Round Table but needed change from his large bill to leave a cash tip. Nelson, who said he's played the California Lottery since its inception 40 years ago, went next door to Winters Wine & Liquor, bought the ticket, then picked up his order. 'I had a $100 bill. So, I got two tickets,' Nelson told lottery officials. 'I think it was $20, and I went to the truck and started scratching.' 'I think this one's a million, but I'm not sure,' Nelson said he told his wife about a Loteria Grande scratcher. The cheesy remark turned out to be correct, and Nelson is now $1 million richer. 'So, my wife almost had a heart attack,' Nelson told lottery officials about her reaction. 'And then we had to go in and buy the pizza. It was all because of her, she's the one that likes the pizza.' France's Mistral launches Europe's first AI reasoning model

PARIS, June 10 (Reuters) - Mistral on Tuesday launched Europe's first AI reasoning model, which uses logical thinking to create a response, as it tries to keep pace with American and Chinese rivals at the forefront of AI development. The French startup has attempted to differentiate itself by championing its European roots, winning the support of French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as making some of its models open source in contrast to the proprietary offerings of OpenAI or Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google. Mistral is considered Europe's best shot at having a home-grown AI competitor, but has lagged behind in terms of market share and revenue. Reasoning models use chain-of-thought techniques - a process that generates answers with intermediate reasoning abilities when solving complex problems. They could also be a promising path forward in advancing AI's capabilities as the traditional approach of building ever-bigger large language models by adding more data and computing power begins to hit limitations. For Mistral, which was valued by venture capitalists at $6.2 billion, an industry shift away from "scaling up" could give it a window to catch up against better capitalized rivals. China's DeepSeek broke through as a viable competitor in January through its low-cost, open-sourced AI models, including one for reasoning. OpenAI was the first to launch its reasoning models last year, followed by Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab a few months later. Meta (META.O), opens new tab, which also offers its models open-sourced, has not yet released a standalone reasoning model, though it said its latest top-shelf model has reasoning capabilities. Mistral is launching an open-sourced Magistral Small model and a more powerful version called Magistral Medium for business customers. "The best human thinking isn't linear - it weaves through logic, insight, uncertainty, and discovery. Reasoning language models have enabled us to augment and delegate complex thinking and deep understanding to AI," Mistral said. American companies have mostly kept their most advanced models proprietary, though a handful, such as Meta, has released open-source models. In contrast, Chinese firms ranging from DeepSeek to Alibaba have taken the open-source path to demonstrate their technological capabilities. Mistral Small is available for download on Hugging Face's platform and can reason in languages including English, French, Spanish, Arabic and simplified Chinese.
