Barcelona set to secure major sponsorship deal worth €40 million

Yahoo17-07-2025
FC Barcelona players returned to training this week, but activity behind the scenes at the club has never stopped.
Club executives have been working intensely to secure new revenue streams to address the current financial challenges, with a clear objective: to return to La Liga's 1:1 rule and regain full freedom to operate in the transfer market.
Sponsorship agreement in sight with Congo
Now, SPORT reports that Barcelona are closing in on finalising a sponsorship agreement worth €40 million with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Over the past few months, several meetings have taken place with potential sponsors to evaluate the feasibility of different commercial agreements. Many of these discussions have been ruled out for various reasons.
However, the deal with the Republic of the Congo has progressed well and is entering the final stages of negotiations.

The deal would see Barcelona include the slogan 'RDC, coeur de l'Afrique' (translates to DRC, the heart of Africa) on one of the club's kits.
On 19 May, the Congolese Minister of Sports and Leisure, Didier Budimbu, visited Barcelona and held a meeting with senior club executives.
Accompanied by his team, he also toured the Ciutat Esportiva facilities and personally presented the project, which was received with interest by the Barcelona board.
The agreement is expected to bring approximately €40 million into the club's finances. According to the report, negotiations are in an advanced stage, and an official announcement could be made as early as next week, before the start of the pre-season tour.
The revenue will be a big boost for the La Liga champions as they aim to return to the 1:1 Fair Play rule, which will allow them to operate with greater freedom in the market.

Canada's Tajon Buchanan joins Villarreal in permanent transfer from Inter

Tajon Buchanan has joined Villarreal in a permanent move from Inter. The 26-year-old has signed a five-year contract at the Spanish club after spending the second half of 2024-25 on loan, scoring once in 13 appearances. Buchanan started only once for Inter in the first half of last season after suffering a broken leg during a Canada training session in July. He joined Villarreal on loan in January, making four starts in the second half of last term and finishing the campaign strongly with a late winner at La Liga champions Barcelona — his only goal for the club — in the penultimate game of the season and an assist against Sevilla on the final day. El Villarreal y el @Inter han alcanzado un acuerdo de traspaso por Tajon Buchanan, que firma con la entidad amarilla hasta el año 2030. Benvingut, Tajon 💛! — Villarreal CF (@VillarrealCF) July 29, 2025 Buchanan signed for Inter from Club Brugge in a deal worth an initial €7million (£6m; $7.7m) plus add-ons in January 2024 but did not start a game for the Italian club that season, featuring 10 times as a substitute as they won the Serie A title. Buchanan, who was the first ever Canadian to play in Italy's top flight, previously played 67 times for Club Brugge after arriving in January 2022. The versatile wide player has made 51 appearances for the Canada men's national team, including starting all three of their group games at the 2022 World Cup. ()

🎥 Barcelona reach major milestone with new turf laid at Camp Nou

Barcelona have reached a major milestone in their return to Camp Nou with the pitch being laid on Tuesday. A clip on social media shows the grass being put down at the revamped stadium although as to when the team will start playing at the iconic ground is still unknown. Club officials and local authorities continue to manage the delayed timeline carefully. While Barcelona had initially aimed to resume matches at Camp Nou by August—specifically for the Joan Gamper Trophy on 10 August—that date has been officially ruled out due to pending construction permits, prompting the club to relocate the prestige match to their Johan Cruyff Stadium. In recent days, a technical and operational trial was conducted at the stadium. On 28 July, the club carried out extensive tests focusing on systems critical to match-day logistics—lighting, evacuation routes, fire detection, signage and accessibility in the South stand and VIP areas. Barcelona are targeting a partial reopening on 14 September, capped at around 60% capacity, equating to approximately 62,000 seats, for a La Liga match against Valencia. Despite these preparations, observers note continued delays across the broader redevelopment. While the pitch is ready and key operational elements are being tested, the third tier of seating and the stadium's roof remain under construction and are now postponed until summer 2026, with full completion expected in mid‑2026. Once fully complete, the upgraded stadium will hold around 105,000 spectators, making it the largest in Europe. The renovation includes improved VIP facilities, museum space, and modern accessibility features—all part of the ambitious €1.5 billion Espai Barça project aimed at boosting matchday revenue and club sustainability. 📸 JOSEP LAGO - AFP or licensors

Mercato: Iñaki Williams slams Barça while defending his brother Nico

Iñaki Williams and Nico Iñaki Williams, the older brother of Nico Williams, opened up to the press in recent hours. The Ghana international didn't hold back when it came to FC Barcelona. Initially rumored to be on the verge of joining FC Barcelona at the start of the summer transfer window, Nico Williams ultimately extended his contract with Bilbao until 2035. This news brought a smile to his brother Iñaki's face. The Ghanaian was asked about the situation during a press conference. "On a family level, it's been a bit complicated because there's been a lot of talk about my brother, and much of what has been said about Nico is false. He simply kept silent. Everyone has the right to think about their future. This summer, people have often been unfair to my brother (…) My brother's decision was not easy. His maturity is incredible. He had a wide range of options and he chose Athletic Bilbao. The club is making considerable progress. We have one of the best squads since I was twelve and joined the first team. He had a choice because he received many offers and a lot of clubs made bids for him. He's a top-level player (…) Many clubs made offers for him because he's a high-caliber player and his release clause could have been easily triggered. He was a gift from the heavens for the big clubs. It wasn't easy, because all the external noise could have made him hesitate, but he made the best decision. My brother was quite clear about his decision, but a long-term contract had to be established. Some events happened that caused a lot of harm, like the vandalism of the mural, the breaking of a car window… He made his decision with heart and ambition. He decided to stay with us and leave his legacy here, just like Julen Guerrero did in his time, and to be a role model for his desire to make his mark here.", he explained. The Black Star continued, not sparing Barça, though he never mentioned them by name: "We all know how the football world works and the pressure they wanted to put on all Athletic supporters, on my brother… A media campaign that they probably thought would benefit them. At Athletic, when we want a player, we do it quietly. All this outside noise did a lot of damage and muddied the waters. Because a lot of what was said and leaked to the media or on social networks was false. My brother had made his decision, but a very long contract tying him until 2035 had to be finalized. It couldn't be made public overnight. Some incidents tarnished Athletic's objectives, like the two times the mural was vandalized, or when they went to my brother's place and smashed a car window… Things that are often unknown but weigh on the player and his decisions. It's very easy not to say or do anything when you're sitting on your couch, but when you're suffering personally, it's different. Seeing my brother suffer as Athletic's captain is not easy. Many teams wanted him when he was just 22. He stayed discreet, and I had to stop him several times because I saw things he didn't like. We had lots of calls and video conferences during that period. People at Athletic must understand that it's not easy to make a life-changing decision in such a short time. The decision was his alone. When he steps onto the pitch at San Mamés, he will receive immense affection."
