Central Michigan dismisses coach Tony Barbee
The Chippewas went 14-17 this season and 49-75 in Barbee's four seasons at the helm.
Barbee, 53, had one winning season at Central Michigan, going 18-14 during the 2023-24 season.
"At this time, I have determined that we need to go in a different direction with the leadership of our men's basketball program," athletic director Amy Folan said in a news release. "I want to thank Tony for his dedication and service during his last four years in Mount Pleasant. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.
"I am confident that we will attract a high-caliber candidate pool during our head coaching search. This is a tremendous opportunity, and we know that our community will rally behind our next Chippewa men's basketball coach."
Barbee also went 49-75 in a four-season stint at Auburn from 2010-14. Prior to that, Barbee went 82-52 at UTEP from 2006-10, leading the Miners to a 26-7 record and a NCAA Tournament appearance during the 2009-10 campaign.

Bo Nix named to NFL Top 100 Players List after impressive rookie season
It was a bit of a surprise with the season that Bo Nix had in his rookie year with the Denver Broncos last season. On the season, Nix threw for 3,775 yards and 29 touchdowns with a completion percentage of 66%. He helped guide the Broncos to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth. They lost in the first round to the Buffalo Bills 31-7, but there was excitement for the future as the season ended. The performance of Nix during the season earned him a spot on this year's NFL Top 100 Players list at No. 64. Making the list is a great honor because it is compiled of rankings from other players around the NFL. In just one season in the league, Nix has the respect of his peers. Improvement will be needed in his second season though. The Broncos were 2-4 versus teams that made the postseason. Nix has come a long way since leaving Auburn after his third season in 2021. He had an up-and-down career while on the Plains that was met with highs and lows. He played some of his best football in that final season with the Tigers before sustaining an injury versus Mississippi State. That season, he threw for 2,293 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 games played. Overall, he passed for 7,250 yards and 39 touchdowns over those three years. Nix would then transfer to Oregon for his final two seasons in college and showed why he was such a highly thought-of high school recruit. In two years at Oregon, Nix had 8,101 yards and 74 touchdowns. In 2023, he finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting after passing for 45 touchdowns. The Broncos then took Nix in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Texas A&M's first SEC opponent reportedly facing uncertainty at QB
Texas A&M's first SEC matchup during the 2025 season will be against the Auburn Tigers inside Kyle Field on Saturday, Sept. 27, after the Aggies' first bye week of the season. While defeating UTSA, Utah State, and Notre Dame on the road is coach Mike Elko's primary focus, Auburn's ongoing quarterback dilemma has likely piqued the interest of the staff before hosting the Tigers a little over a month from now. On Monday, 247Sports beat writer Nathan King released coach Hugh Freeze's brief quote regarding Auburn's QB uncertainty after King asked if three Auburn signal callers would see playing time during the Tigers' season-opener on the road against Baylor. The Bears return one of the better defenses in the Big 12, which could spell danger if Freeze can't decide on who will lead the offense. 'Yes. Yeah. There's strengths — you put on Ashton's film from Stanford, and he ran away from some really good teams.' This offseason, former five-star Oklahoma starting quarterback Jackson Arnold, who has yet to live up to his prolific recruiting ranking, transferred to Auburn with the hopes of regaining his swagger and playing with one of many of us consider to be the best wide receiver duos in college football with Cam Coleman and Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singelton Jr. Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels has also leaped this preseason, earning Freeze's praise. Still, having two elite receivers without a reliable quarterback is similar to Texas A&M's issues during the 2022 season, and the fact that Ashton Daniels and freshman Deuce Knight are neck and neck with Arnold does not sound great for the Tigers' offense. Either way, just like Notre Dame's uncertainty as the position before the Aggies travel to South Bend on Sept. 13, Mike Elko's veteran defense could enter both game with a significant advantage in the secondary. Anonymous coaches, GMs, evaluate Auburn's impressive transfer portal haul
Auburn football reeled in a top-10 transfer portal class during the offseason. Not only did they bring in talented players poised to make giant, immediate impacts, but they also filled needs left behind by several quality playmakers. Four of Auburn's transfer portal additions were included in The Athletic's top 100 transfer rankings, and they are catching the eyes of college football's most trusted coaches and general managers. Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton checks in at No. 7, followed by Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold (No. 31), Virginia Tech offensive lineman transfer Xavier Chaplin, and Miami (Ohio) defensive back Raion Strader (No. 44). The Athletic reached out to several head coaches, coordinators, and general managers to provide feedback for several transfers on the list. In terms of Auburn's representation, their anonymous responses will bring excitement to the Tiger fanbase. One player who received an anonymous evaluation was quarterback Jackson Arnold, who is slated to become Auburn's starting quarterback. Arnold, a former five-star quarterback and a Gatorade Player of the Year award winner from Texas, departed Oklahoma after a less-than-ideal tenure. Despite the challenges of playing for multiple offensive coordinators and injuries to his wide receiver corps, Arnold managed to pass for 1,421 yards and 12 touchdowns last season in Norman. Now on the Plains, Arnold is projected to have a "fresh start" with one of the nation's best wide receiver units and an experienced offensive line. One Power Four coordinator feels that Arnold is still a great quarterback and that a change of scenery could bring back the spark that he once had. 'I think he's really talented. He still has a chance to be a really good player,' a Power Four coordinator said. Singleton was Georgia Tech's leading receiver in each of the last two seasons by reeling in 104 catches for 1,468 yards and nine touchdowns. Not only is he a solid addition to the wide receiver room, but he is a threat in the return game. He is expected to join Rayshawn Pleasant, another transfer known for his speed, in the Tigers' return unit this season. His decision to transfer away from Georgia Tech was met with criticism by the media in the Atlanta market; however, Singleton's addition to Auburn's stacked offense will ultimately push the program in a positive direction. One Power Four General Manager says that Singleton's high transfer ranking is warranted. 'He's the real deal. He was the best receiver in the portal,' the anonymous general manager told The Athletic. Chaplin and Strader round out the top 50 of The Athletic's rankings. Chaplin started 25 games at left tackle for Virginia Tech over the last two seasons, and the likes of Bruce Feldman, Sam Kahn Jr., and Manny Navarro, who compiled the rankings, feel that Chaplin's experience will allow Dillon Wade to play more guard this season after shuffling around the unit last season. As for Strader, the piece believes that the All-MAC selection will help Auburn's cornerback position, which will also include Jay Crawford and Kayin Lee. Auburn's 2025 transfer portal haul ranked No. 8 in 247Sports' transfer portal rankings, leading several key programs, including Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Colorado. Auburn filled several more needs from portal talent at running back (Durell Robinson), wide receiver (Eric Singleton and Horatio Fields), and linebacker (Caleb Wheatland).
