Pahalgam Terrorist's Funeral In PoK Takes Unexpected Turn

NDTV12 hours ago
The funeral of Habib Tahir, one of the terrorists behind the April 22 strike who was killed in Jammu & Kashmir, was held in his village in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) last week - in yet another incident that proves Pakistan's complicity in the Pahalgam terror attack and cross-border terrorism.
Earlier, members of the Pakistan Army had attended the funeral of terrorists who were killed in Operation Sindoor that was launched by India to avenge the killing of 26 tourists, including a Nepali citizen, in the Pahalgam strike. The terrorists killed were part of a banned group, the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) led by terrorist Hafiz Saeed.
According to sources, Tahir was reportedly recruited and trained by Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the LeT, had claimed responsibility for the attack and was recently tagged as a terrorist organisation by the United States for its role.
Tahir was among three Pahalgam terrorists shot dead in an encounter by security forces at Harwan in Srinagar on July 28. Srinagar Senior Superintendent Of Police GV Sundeep Chakravarty confirmed the terrorists belonged to LeT and were killed during Operation Mahadev.
Videos and photos available on social media showed local residents in PoK's Kuiyaan village gathering for the final prayers for Tahir on July 30.
The sources said the funeral, however, turned tense and took an unexpected turn when a local LeT commander, Rizwan Hanif, arrived with armed men despite the terror group being barred by Tahir's family. A confrontation erupted when Hanif's nephew allegedly threatened the mourners with a gun, leading to public outrage. Hanif and his associates were eventually forced to leave the spot.
The resistance comes amid signs of a shift in state policy, with the Pakistani police taking action against events organised by terrorists and reduced public activity by such groups.
In May, India released the names of top Pakistani officials who attended the funeral of LeT terrorists, who were gunned down during Operation Sindoor. Officials said the funeral of terrorists killed in Muridke in Pakistan's Punjab province was led by Abdul Rauf, a LeT commander who is a specially designated global terrorist by the United States.
Muridke is home to the headquarters of the LeT and is known as the "terror nursery" of Pakistan. Reports said the Pahalgam terrorists were trained at this spot.
Last month, Pakistan claimed it had "dismantled" the LeT and any effort to link the Pahalgam terror attack with the defunct terrorist network was against reality. Stating that the investigation into the Pahalgam attack is "still inconclusive," it said, "any linkage with LeT, a defunct organisation banned in Pakistan, belies ground realities".

‘Grant martyr status to Pahalgam attack victims'

Kanpur: Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh on Sunday visited the family of Pahalgam terror attack victim Shubham Dwivedi in Kanpur on Sunday and supported the collective appeal for martyr status to all 26 victims. Singh offered condolence to the family and shared comprehensive details about the parliamentary discussions on 'Operation Sindoor'. "The families of all 26 victims, including Shubham's relatives, are united in their request for martyr status recognition. We appeal to the Prime Minister to acknowledge their sentiments. Such recognition would demonstrate solidarity between the govt and citizens against terrorism, whilst honouring the deceased," said Singh, adding that the appeal had garnered widespread support. He said that the matter was extensively deliberated in Parliament, with commitments for continued discussions. "The families also seek govt employment opportunities and compensation for their loss," Singh added. Meanwhile, Sanjay Singh also led a march with the students of primary school of Laxmanpur village, which was merged with other schools. "Their school was moved 2 kilometres away. According to the new decision, the school distance should not be more than 1 kilometre. Will the school open on Monday? If not, there will be a protest," Singh said. 2 narco smugglers held, drone, heroin recovered

Amritsar: In two separate incidents, the Border Security Force ( BSF ) troops have arrested two narco smugglers in Tarn Taran and also recovered a drone in Ferozepur. A BSF spokesperson informed here on Sunday, early this morning, the troops launched a search operation near Kalsian village in Tarn Taran after detecting drone activity in the area. During the operation, two smugglers, hiding in a paddy field, were apprehended. Based on their disclosure, a packet of heroin weighing approximately 610 grams — wrapped in yellow adhesive tape, indicative of a drone drop — was recovered from a nearby irrigated field, said the spokesperson. In a separate operation Saturday evening, the BSF troops recovered a DJI Mavic 3 Classic drone from a farming field near Barreke village in Ferozepur district. This is not the first time the BSF has made some seizures. In fact, several attempts have been made by Pakistani smugglers to send over drugs and firearms from across the border with the help of drones. While anti-drone technology has helped thwart such attempts by Pakistani smugglers, they continue to carry out the illicit activity. They often rope in people living along border villages in India to distribute their contrabands forward, according to security agencies. ED arrests MD of city co in fake bank guarantee case

Bhubaneswar: Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday arrested Partha Sarathi Biswal, managing director of a Bhubaneswar-based private company, in connection with an alleged fake bank guarantee case. The ED probe stemmed from a case registered by the economic offences wing of Delhi Police against the company and its directors for allegedly providing a fake bank guarantee submitted to a central PSU. "The company fraudulently arranged and submitted fake bank guarantees of Rs 68.2 crore along with forged SBI endorsements and fabricated confirmations for a tender of the PSU. For providing this bank guarantee, Rs 5.40 crore was received by the company from Reliance Power Ltd," an ED statement said. The investigating agency confirmed counterfeit documents were used under names of various banks and false email addresses created under SBI's name. Investigation revealed the private company, established in 2019, operated several undeclared bank accounts and conducted transactions inconsistent with its stated turnover. Investigation also uncovered breaches of the Companies Act. "No statutory records are found at registered address — such as books of accounts, shareholders' registers, etc. Dummy directors are found to be used just to sign the documents. At least seven undisclosed bank account of the company are found," the ED stated. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
