Call to make Kurnool a drug-free district
Kurnool: In observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, district Collector P Ranjith Basha called for united efforts to transform the district into a drug-free zone. Speaking at a programme at the district Collectorate on Thursday, he underscored the devastating impact of drug abuse on youth and society. He stressed the importance of awareness campaigns, community participation, and strict surveillance measures. He also urged parents to encourage children to engage in sports and cultural activities as a means of keeping them away from harmful influences.
The Collector detailed government initiatives aimed at curbing drug abuse, such as inter-departmental coordination meetings, awareness drives in schools and colleges, rehabilitation services, and a toll-free number (1972) for confidential reporting of drug-related activities. He called upon citizens to play an active role in reporting drug supply or consumption in their communities.
MP B Nagaraju reiterated the government's goal of achieving 'Ganja-free Andhra Pradesh', highlighting the use of drone and satellite surveillance to detect and eliminate cannabis cultivation. DIG Koya Praveen provided historical context on drug cultivation in the region and credited the current administration for its strict crackdown on such practices.
MLA Gouru Charitha observed that drug usage had spread into rural areas but noted that the government's proactive measures, including special committees and dedicated officers, had led to a significant decline in cannabis growth. SP Vikrant Patil warned of severe legal consequences under NDPS Act, while also highlighting the importance of rehabilitation for addicts. Mayor BY Ramayya urged parents to monitor their children's behavior and financial habits. An anti-drug awareness rally was held from Raj Vihar Center to the Collectorate.

Notably, Mahal had a long-standing rivalry with UK-based fugitive gangster Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu. The victim, 43-year-old Dipak, was on a morning walk in Nangal Thakaran village with his daughter when at least two unidentified killers on a motorcycle opened fire on him. The attackers reportedly fired seven to eight rounds, killing Dipak on the spot. His daughter sustained pellet injuries to her hand during the incident. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is now reported to be out of danger, a senior police officer confirmed. In a similar incident that occurred in Punjab, jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother and one other person accompanying her were reportedly shot dead by unidentified people on a bike in Batala. The victim, identified as Harjit Kaur, sustained critical injuries and was transferred to a hospital in Amritsar, news agency PTI reported. She died later from her bullet injuries. 'Unidentified bike-borne persons opened fire when Harjit Kaur and another person Karanvir Singh were in the car," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Batala, Paramveer Singh said. Harjit Kaur, who hails from Bhagwanpur, was earlier elected as a member of the village panchayat. Jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria had been detained under the PIT-NDPS Act in March. He was shifted from the central jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail. ‘Yoga guru' who returned from Goa to set up ashram in Chhattisgarh arrested, police say 2 kg weed found
A 45-year-old self-proclaimed yoga guru, who recently returned from Goa and set up an ashram in Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon district, has been arrested for allegedly possessing nearly 2 kilograms of cannabis after allegations emerged that drugs were being peddled on the premises. The accused had returned after spending a decade in Goa, where he ran 'The Krantis', teaching what he called Kranti Yoga to many, including foreigners. The accused, Tarun Kranti Agrawal alias Sonu, recently purchased a property spanning 5 acres of land near the Pragya Giri hills, located barely two kilometres from the Dongargarh temple, also a popular tourist destination. A few months later, Kanti began construction work to set up an ashram on the premises. However, earlier this month, the local Dongargarh police started receiving complaints about drugs allegedly being served on the premises to minors and tourists. According to the police, it was also alleged that some youngsters at the place were carrying knives. 'We received information about unlawful activities taking place on the premises, after which we raided the place on June 25. We found 1.993 kg of cannabis in his possession. He was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and remanded to judicial custody. We suspect he was selling drugs on the premises,' said the Rajnandgaon Superintendent of Police, Mohit Garg. Agrawal's parents are businessmen, and he is a native of Dongargarh. He left his home two decades ago, police said. 'Agrawal claimed before us (the police) that he has visited many countries and runs 10 NGOs. We will be seizing his passport, and we have received information about a few NGOS that he is referring to. We will check the activities of these organisations,' said an official. Agrawal has been booked under section 20 B (produces, manufactures, possesses, sells, purchases, transports, imports inter-State, exports inter-State or uses cannabis) of the NDPS Act.

Call to build drug-free society
Puttaparthi: On International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a walkathon rally was held in Puttaparthi on Thursday under the aegis of the district administration. District Collector TS Chetan emphasized the importance of building a drug-free Sri Sathya Sai district and urged youth to distinguish between right and wrong and to stay away from drugs menace. He called on students and youth to remain alert and not fall prey to bad habits or peer pressure. He highlighted the devastating effects of drug addiction on families and individuals, pointing out that many young lives are being ruined, and families are facing financial and emotional breakdowns. So far, the government has been taking stringent steps to control drug abuse for the past year. He urged students, parents, and the public to stay informed and report any drug-related activity in villages, mandals, or towns to the toll-free number 1972, assuring that all information will be kept confidential. He informed that the government has also set up an Eagle Task Force to monitor and crack down on drug-related activities continuously. District SP V Ratna reiterated the importance of staying away from drugs and warned youth not to destroy their families by falling into addiction. She encouraged the public to report any information related to drug use, sale, or transport via the toll-free number 1972 and highlighted the role of the Eagle Task Force in monitoring these cases vigilantly. Puttaparthi MLA Pallle Sindhura Reddy stressed the importance of making the right choices and steering clear of dangerous substances. 'Today's children are tomorrow's responsible citizens of India,' she said, urging them to stay away from drugs from this very day.
