Let's reduce plastic usage and protect environment: Collector

Kurnool: Emphasizing the urgent need to safeguard the environment, Kurnool District Collector P Ranjith Basha called upon citizens to completely reduce the use of plastic and adopt sustainable alternatives. He was speaking at the World Environment Day celebrations organised by the Pollution Control Board at Sunayana Auditorium on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector underlined the critical importance of environmental conservation and pollution control. He noted that World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, with the goal of promoting global awareness and action for the environment. 'This year, the global theme is 'Beat Plastic Pollution', reflecting the worldwide mission to eliminate plastic waste. Everyone must play a role in this effort,' he said. He pointed out that India is among the top consumers of plastic globally, generating around 9.5 million tonnes annually—accounting for one-fifth of global plastic consumption. Expressing concern, he said that plastic has reached not only oceans and land surfaces but also seeped into groundwater and human bodies, increasing the risk of chronic illnesses, including various types of cancer. He appealed to the public to switch to eco-friendly, reusable alternatives, and directed officials to intensify awareness campaigns on the hazards of plastic usage. He also emphasized the need to plant more trees, noting their vital role in maintaining environmental balance. Kurnool Municipal Commissioner Ravindra Babu, addressing the gathering, highlighted how improper waste disposal, particularly plastic being dumped into drains, was obstructing water flow, breeding mosquitoes, and leading to health hazards. Earlier in the day, a massive awareness rally was organised by the Department of Environment from Zilla Parishad Office to the Collectorate, which was flagged off by Joint Collector Dr B Navya. Kurnool RDO Sandeep Kumar, PCB EE Shankar Reddy, DRDA PD Ramana Reddy, Factories Inspector Narayana Reddy, District Science Officer Rangamma, along with students, NGOs, industry representatives, and NCC cadets participated in the programme.

Collector calls for malaria prevention

Kurnool: District Collector P Ranjith Basha has directed officials to implement effective measures for the prevention of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. As part of the Malaria Prevention Month being observed from June 1 to June 30, the Collector unveiled an awareness wall poster on malaria at the Sunayana Auditorium in the Collectorate on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector stressed the need for a coordinated effort to curb the spread of diseases like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya, which are commonly transmitted through mosquitoes. He instructed concerned department officials to intensify preventive actions throughout the district. The Collector emphasized that with the onset of the monsoon season, officials must ensure there is no stagnant water in rural and urban areas. He directed the District Panchayat Officer (DPO) and Municipal Commissioners to take necessary steps to prevent water stagnation, and to implement proper sanitation measures, including cleaning water tanks and carrying out chlorination. During door-to-door surveys, he instructed field staff to immediately photograph any blocked drains or water stagnation and upload them on the Vector Hygiene App. He emphasized the need for prompt action by sanitation teams to clear such blockages without delay. Special attention must be paid to children under five years of age and pregnant women. If anyone exhibits symptoms such as fever, they must be promptly taken to the nearest health center, the Collector instructed ICDS officials. He also highlighted the risk posed by potholes on roads, where stagnant water can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The Ro&B Department was asked to ensure there is no water accumulation in such locations and RWS department told to address pipe leakages, as freshwater stagnation.

Kurnool: Under the NTR Bharosa Pension Scheme, pensions amounting to Rs.103.35 crore have been distributed to 2,37,200 eligible beneficiaries in the Kurnool district for the month of June, stated district Collector P Ranjith Basha. On Saturday morning, as part of the pension disbursement drive, the Collector personally visited Devanagar in Kurnool city to hand over pensions to beneficiaries at their residences. Among those who received pensions were Jhansi Rani and Salma Bee (old age pensions), Thota Meenakshi and Aadi Lakshmi (widow pensions), Nirmala and Shiva Shankar (disability pensions), and Sheik Shavali (chronic illness-related pension). Since June 1 falls on a Sunday this year, the State government opted to distribute pensions a day in advance, he added. Collector Basha also highlighted that he had brought to the state government's attention the need for immediate support to spouses in cases where a pensioner passes away suddenly. Acting on this, the Chief Minister directed officials to sanction widow pensions promptly. As a result, widow pensions have been approved for 2,319 women in the district whose husbands passed away between December 1, 2023, and November 30, 2024. These pensions will be distributed on June 12. Top priority to make Kurnool TB-free district: Collector

Kurnool: District Collector P Ranjith Basha on Monday directed officials to effectively implement the 'TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' campaign and work towards making Kurnool a tuberculosis (TB)-free district. The Collector unveiled the campaign posters of 'TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' at the Sunayana Auditorium in the Collectorate. Addressing the gathering, the Collector announced that the campaign will formally commence on June 2. As part of the Intensified TB Screening initiative, individuals belonging to high-risk groups across the district will be identified and screened. Those exhibiting symptoms will be subjected to NAAT or X-ray testing. If TB is diagnosed, prompt medical treatment will be initiated, he stated. He elaborated that the high-risk population has been classified into seven categories: people above 60 years of age, those with diabetes, hypertension, cancer, individuals who had undergone TB treatment in the past five years, smokers, alcohol consumers, mine and factory workers, prisoners, the homeless, and residents of orphanages and shelters. All these groups will be screened for ten common TB symptoms. The Collector also emphasized the importance of community involvement through the Nikshay Mitra and Jan-Bhagidari initiatives, appealing to district and mandal-level officials, industrialists, NGOs, corporate bodies, elected representatives, and other willing individuals to register as Nikshay Mitras. These volunteers are expected to provide nutritional support and moral assistance to TB patients, thereby aiding the goal of eradicating TB from society. He stressed the need to organise TB awareness sessions through local leaders, self-help groups, health committees, and urban/rural institutions to foster widespread community awareness. Further, he urged active participation from departments such as Panchayati Raj, PD-DRDA, and PD-MEPMA in the national priority initiative and called for coordinated implementation of the campaign. District Leprosy, AIDS, and TB Officer Dr L Bhaskar, District Medical and Health Officer Dr Shanti Kala, District Malaria Officer Nookaraju, DNMO Dr G Mallikarjuna Reddy, and several TB support staff attended the meeting.
