Adults Share Wild Childhood Misconceptions

Buzz Feed2 days ago
As kids, there are many things about the world around us that simply don't make sense. Sometimes we even invent these misconceptions ourselves! And one way or another, most of us eventually realize how silly those beliefs were, even if we we don't realize it until we're adults...
So recently, when I wrote a post where people shared the silly childhood beliefs they held into adulthood, I received dozens of responses from the BuzzFeed Community sharing their weirdest, wackiest, and wildest childhood notions and couldn't stop laughing. From pink cows to roaring clouds, here are 21 of their best stories:
"I thought a Cheat Sheet was called a 'Cheat Cheat' until I was in my late 30s and I sent my boss and coworkers an email with the subject title and attachment both named 'Program Cheat Cheat.'"
"When I heard my boss laugh out loud and say, 'Cheat Cheat,' I realized I had been saying it wrong all these years! "—Anonymous
"A much older cousin once told me that if you stopped pooping mid-poop, your butthole would cut the poop in half, and the interior half would shoot directly to your brain, killing you instantly."
"I was 15 years old when I discovered that star signs are not based on anything other than when you were born. I am a twin, and my sign is Gemini. My mom was a virgin until marriage, and she was a Virgo. My dad and younger sister are very mean and rude people; they are Scorpios."
"When I was a kid, my mom had one rule for swimming: Get out of the water the second your fingers start to wrinkle. Why? Because if you didn't, they'd stay wrinkled FOREVER. Like, Benjamin-Button-meets-Raisinette levels of fear."
"So naturally, every time we were in a pool or the sea, my siblings and I would leap out of the water like soggy little gremlins the moment we spotted a single wrinkle.Fast forward 25 years: I was in my early 30s, hanging out at the beach with a friend and my mom. My friend and I went for a quick swim, and when we got out, my mom looked surprised. She asked us, 'Why so soon? You looked like you were having fun.' I, in complete seriousness, said, 'Because of our fingers. You know what happens if they stay wrinkled too long.'My mother absolutely lost it and nearly collapsed from laughter. Through her wheezing, she confessed, 'That was just the only way I could get you out of the water!''—currywurst8
"As a kid, I had straight hair, but I always loved curly hair. One day, my dad told me that since the crust slice of a loaf of bread was curled, if I always ate the crust, I would have curly hair. I believed that for about 10 years. "
"I grew up in Florida, so I didn't have much experience with trees that changed color and lost their leaves. I didn't realize that different kinds of trees turn the same color whenever they change. I thought that trees 'chose' a color they liked every year."
"As a young adult, I was having oral surgery and high on nitrous oxide. While free associating on the theme of dentistry, I remembered being in the dentist chair when I was, maybe, six or seven years old. The dentist asked me, very seriously, if I wanted a 'Mickey Mouse filling' or a 'Donald Duck filling.' I was adamant that it had to be Mickey — Donald was loud and unpleasant, I didn't want him in my mouth!"
"Obligingly, the dentist said to his assistant, 'Would you please mix up a Mickey Mouse filling for this young man?' She did so, and he squeezed it into my tooth. It wasn't until that day, when I was perhaps 25, that I ever thought of it again and realized that there had never been Mickey Mouse fillings! My first, shocked, reaction was, 'He lied to me!' After those two seconds, it was very funny."—Anonymous, 75 Dallas, TX
"I thought the clouds made loud roaring sounds when the wind blew between them or if they moved."
"I always thought musical groups and bands lived together in the same house. It never crossed my mind they might have spouses or children, and I was fully an adult before that thought crossed my mind."
"I thought pheasants were extinct. My grandma told me that the kings of England hunted them and ate them so much that they went extinct. Day one of studying in the UK and I saw a weird bird...lo and behold, a pheasant. I took a picture of it and sent it to my mom."
"The conversation went like this: 'Mom, I found this weird bird on campus. Didn't the kings of England eat them?' She texted back, 'Yes, but that doesn't make them extinct.'"—Anonymous, 25, Guatemala-UK
"I thought actors were wearing a super thin layer of plastic on their lips during make-out scenes because I couldn't fathom kissing someone you weren't at least engaged to."
"My mom always told me her poop didn't stink. One day, in my late twenties, I walked by her bathroom and noticed a smell. I asked if she had just 'used' the bathroom, and she said, 'Yes?'"
"Not me, but my mother-in-law always told my husband that dragonflies would sew a person's eyes shut if they let them get too close. When he first told me, I laughed and said, 'I've never heard of that, and it isn't true. Are they going to sew your hands behind your back first?'"
"I think he believed it until we were at the lake early one summer, napping in the sun, when he woke me up to show me about a dozen dragonflies resting on my legs."—Anonymous, 63, Texas
"When I was young, my parents told me whipped cream would only come out of the can if you pushed both red dots over the two 'I's' in Reddi Whip at the same time, so they would hold the can upside down so I could press the dots."
"I thought chocolate milk came from brown cows. I lost my ever-loving mind the first time my mom gave me strawberry milk and demanded she take me to see the pink cows immediately! I was sad to learn I was wrong."
"When I was little, Labyrinth was my favorite movie. Those who've watched the movie will remember how Jareth set a timer for 13 hours. When I watched that, I asked my mom why that clock had a 13 on it, and instead of explaining to me that it was a timer, she told me that clocks in England have 13 hours on them.'
"And I just believed that for an embarrassingly long time."—[deleted]
"I didn't know about the digestive process, so I thought that the food you ate just sort of filled up your body. I remember looking at myself one day and thinking that I had probably eaten enough food so that I was filled up to my knees, and I should slow down if I wanted to make it to adulthood."
"Growing up, my parents drank their coffee black and strong enough to slice. It wasn't until I was in my 30s that I realized I could drink my coffee weak and drowning in cream and sugar. I never liked the taste of coffee, and even now, I think black coffee is vile."
"Whenever my family would order pizza during my early childhood years, I thought the delivery person would come into our house and have a slice of pizza with us. I would always invite them in, and I was crushed every time that did not happen."
"I used to think those floodlights/spotlights that are used to advertise events like grand openings were like carnival rides, and people could strap into a seat on top of them and touch the clouds. (I was also convinced that clouds tasted like cotton balls!)"
"My grandma used to tell me that she had a magic telescope and could see everything I did, and that she would check up on me regularly to see if I behaved."

Millennials, I'm Dying To Know The "Cringe" Millennial Trends That Should Be Buried In The Archives Forever

Everything that's being marketed to us these days feels like a remix of the past, from reboots and remakes to low-rise jeans and pop-punk revivals. If you're a millennial, you've probably already seen it all the first time when it was still considered cutting-edge. Related: Maybe it's the rise of AI, the TikTok-fueled nostalgia economy, or just the fact that Gen Z never knew a world without social media. However, originality feels like it's gone missing. And if you've recently seen a pair of JNCO jeans in the wild or a trucker hat at brunch, you might've felt a full-body shudder. Related: As someone considered an Unc in certain circles — and maybe I'm just grumpy and jaded — I have a sneaking suspicion a few of you feel the same way I do. For the millennials of the BuzzFeed Community, what's the trend — fashion, lifestyle, aesthetic, internet behavior — that deserves to stay buried in the past? Related: A few come to my mind off the top: skinny jeans, am I right? I'm honestly surprised they didn't cause long-term blood circulation issues for those of us whose legs couldn't even breathe in them. And while some are attempting to make them fashionable again, it's really just a big no. Although I wouldn't be shocked if it happens again soon, I'm begging for Instagram's in-app filters to stay dead and buried. We don't need them. Let's move on. Related: And maybe most importantly, can we let hustle culture die already? I'll give Gen Z credit: they've done a great job rejecting the grind economy, and let's hope it stays that way. We already know we're getting the short end of the stick, no matter how burnt out we get. And while we're at it, let's retire the whole "can't adult today" energy, too. We're grown. We pay bills. We're just exhausted. On that note, share the millennial trends that should remain in the past and never return in the comment section. You could also plan some travel or focus more on your own mindset and shifting your internal beliefs. There's no shortage of action in your romantic life when Mars moves into Libra on August 6. The next few weeks are great for flirting, dating, and exploring your sexuality. This can also deliver some drama and jealousy, too! People are drawn to you like a moth to a flame. You might also need to call out toxic relationship patterns. On the bright side, this can fill you with a renewed sense of purpose and creative inspiration to go after some of your goals. But first, you're dealing with doubts and self-criticisms when Mars in Libra faces off with Saturn in Aries on August 8. You might have to kiss a few frogs before your ideal partner(s) come along. Temporary setbacks regarding some of your passion projects can pop up. Social media posts can go nowhere—but this is temporary! Don't let it derail you. The Full Moon in Aquarius on August 9 brings important news your way. Conversations shift your understanding and perspective and you're sharing your own truth. This is a moment to also stand up for what you believe in. If you've been studying something new, this could also mark a moment of proficiency or gaining attention for your expertise. You finally feel understood when Mercury Retrograde in Leo ends on August 11! Misunderstandings and miscommunication begin to clear up slowly. You're putting the finishing touches on your plans and if you've been considering taking on a new contract—you might be ready to make that decision. If you dealt with drama or changes with friends or family, that also begins to calm down. On the same day, you're receiving lucky financial news when Venus and Jupiter, both in Cancer, team up in the sky. You could receive a job offer, raise, or a really thoughtful gift. Maybe you treat yourself and make a purchase on something you've coveted for some time. This can also boost your confidence and self-esteem—you're feeling proud of yourself. You're taking an idea and running with it when Mercury in Leo links up with Mars in Libra on August 14. The energy is productive and exciting. The conversations are flirty and fun. You're feeling social and this is a great day to take a risk. The Sun enters Virgo on August 22 and you're ready to catch up on some rest. You might need more sleep than normal and feel more emotional and sentimental. You might also make a decision to move, find a new roommate, or change up your living space in some way. You're also reflecting more on the patterns that run in your family and how they've impacted who you are. You might be ready to break some cycles. A new moon in Virgo, on the same day, encourages you to release the past. You're creating new space for new opportunities and connections to find you. You can speak your dreams into existence once Venus moves into Leo on August 25. Your words have extra charm and tact, making it easier to win others over. This is also a lucky time for communication—you could learn hopeful news or even tell someone you love them. You might also decide to book some travel or sign up for a class and learn something new. Some of your dreams are starting to form in unexpected ways when Uranus, in your sign, links up with Neptune in Aries on August 28. An influential person or someone who believes in you could show up with an opportunity that feels too good to be true. Friendships can also bring a deep sense of healing and belonging today.

Daily Horoscope for July 25, 2025

General Daily Insight for July 25, 2025 We might have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet. This is exactly what's taking place when the ego-driven Sun faces off with transformative Pluto at 2:33 am EDT, proving to us that we can change. These shifts may involve uncomfortable or unprecedented situations that have us a bit out of our depth. Later on, the emotional Moon conjoins thoughtful Mercury in bold Leo, aligning our hearts and minds to boldly go where we've never gone before. New horizons, here we come! Aries March 21 – April 19 You're taking a risk in pursuit of happiness. You may have been afraid of joining a group or pursuing a goal in the past, thinking that it was too daunting for you to put your hat into the ring. Now, though, you are ready to test yourself! You likely have been working on bettering yourself, or at the very least, making an effort to be more outgoing or less afraid of making mistakes. Nothing will happen if you don't put yourself out there. Taurus April 20 – May 20 Prioritizing your heart over your achievements is fundamental. You may find that your recent goals are starting to wear on you — your soul needs a break! This can be achieved by resting, spending time with people who create balance in your life, and rejecting unnecessary, stressful activities. Make sure that you're not getting caught up in the rat race, because there is so much more to experience outside of the daily grind. Check something off your bucket list instead of your to-do list. Gemini May 21 – June 20 Fresh information may prompt you to speak up. You may have kept something to yourself until you learned that there was more to the story. What you learn could show you that there's no reason to stay quiet, especially once you see how the truth can set you free. There's nothing wrong with being your most authentic self, even if the idea of stepping into your true power. When you speak from your heart, there's nothing anyone can do to take it away from you. Cancer June 21 – July 22 The rewards of loyalty can be yours. Someone who appreciates your loyalty could provide you with an unexpected opportunity, support you in your time of need, or uplift you in some other way you'd never expect from them. Alternatively, if you haven't proven reliable in any way, the seeds of doubt planted by past mistakes might be about to teach you a lesson about trust. As you cultivate trust by making and keeping your promises, your peers will be more willing to share amazing prospects. Leo July 23 – August 22 Being who you are will never make everyone happy. There will always be naysayers and nitpickers who dislike you simply because you are who you are, and this is the main reason that if you try to please all, you will almost definitely end up pleasing none. There is truly no satisfying some people, especially when they seem devoted to disliking anything and everything you do. Be yourself, no matter how they try to control you. That's your best path to success. Virgo August 23 – September 22 Who you are doesn't depend on what other people think. You may be hiding yourself away because of hidden enemies who posed as friends or authority figures. While such betrayals are understandably painful, it's important to put yourself back out there once you're ready. Hiding in the dark will only allow them to win by pushing you out of the frame so that they can take up the full picture. This can be a moment of amazing growth by standing up to those who would shrink you. Libra September 23 – October 22 You can be a voice for those who can't speak up for themselves. Perhaps there's someone in your midst who is allowing others to talk down to them or push them away from the group. Standing by in silence will only make things easier for those pushing them away! Even though you may not be close with whoever needs aid, pay attention to what is truly going on. You might then understand how you can act as the positive voice that they needed to keep going. Scorpio October 23 – November 21 You're figuring out where you need to step up and be a leader. You might find that a situation that you were depending on others to complete isn't progressing, and this requires you to take control. Maybe a co-worker dropped the ball, and now you have to be the one to make sure that everything gets done. It's not easy to take the lead when you aren't expecting to, but you ARE ready. Don't let them dictate how you decide to fix things, either. Sagittarius November 22 – December 21 You're showing others how to handle surprises. While everyone else could seem lost in life's chaos, you can thrive in these unexpected times. This is a unique strength of yours that you might be able to share with your friends, showing them how you ride the waves no matter how large or small they are. Life is about adapting to all circumstances! Trying to be too rigid may be your downfall and theirs. Give them a hand so everyone can thrive in uncertain times. Capricorn December 22 – January 19 Structures that you were depending on may be crumbling. Feeling foundational aspects of your life shift underfoot can be jarring, but don't panic. All you have to do is pay attention to the changes and, in response, shift your expectations and routines. This doesn't mean that you have to feel insecure. If anxiety creeps in, keep reminding yourself that you're capable and have handled rocky situations before. Remember, everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay today, it's not the end. Aquarius January 20 – February 18 You may be the chaotic factor in your present life. Other people might be surprised by your choices and actions, as you're probably keeping them on their toes with the ways you've been changing your mind or making drastic decisions. It's worth it to check in with your inner self and make sure that you're not making decisions simply for the plot, with no end goal in sight. Pay attention to where you could be ending up with these decisions to avoid risking nasty surprises. Pisces February 19 – March 20 What have you been ignoring? The parts of your life that you've left by the wayside may be making themselves undeniable throughout the day, demanding that you acknowledge them and make decisions accordingly. Pretending that they're not there probably won't help! It will be difficult to proceed with your regular lifestyle until you address what's going on outside of your field of vision. Don't shy away from the truth, or it could continually make itself more noticeable — to yourself and others.
