"I think this is a worse version than Kawhi" - Jason Whitlock says Angel isn't injured but is purposely sitting out games
WNBA star Angel Reese has not played for the Chicago Sky since July 29th. According to the Sky, Reese is nursing a back injury. However, her team has not provided any information as to what is wrong with Angel's back, when she suffered the injury, or provided a timetable for her return.
With the details of her injury murky, former ESPN and Fox Sports analyst Jason Whitlock thinks that Angel isn't hurt and has abandoned her WNBA squad.
"I think she's quit on the Chicago Sky. She's been claiming a back injury basically since the All-Star break, and there's no details. Every day, we hear that Angel Reese is day-to-day, and every week, there's no update on what she is struggling with, what she's doing. There's nothing. There's no information on Angel Reese. I think she's quit on the season. I think this is a worse version of Kawhi Leonard," said Whitlock.
She played 32 minutes on July 29th and just disappeared
Angel has missed the Sky's last five games, and the team has gone 1-4 without her. Overall, Chicago is a miserable 8-23 on the season, and they are currently next to last in the Eastern Conference and third-worst overall in the league.
Jason noted that Angel had that impressive 10-game stretch where she averaged 18.6 points, 14.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 stocks (steals+blocks) per game while shooting 51 percent from the field, 82 percent from the foul line and with a true shooting percentage of 58 percent. Reese posted a 22-13-3 stat line on 32 minutes versus the Washington Mystics on July 29th and has not played since.
"I came to this conclusion when I watched the Indiana Fever destroy the Chicago Sky recently in Indianapolis. Guess who wasn't there? Angel Reese. Angel Reese declined to travel to Indianapolis, and her coach said something about she's just focused on her rehab right now, and she's day-to-day. We've never had an explanation on what caused the back injury, what's a time frame for her recovery. All we've heard is day-to-day, and Angel Reese has disappeared," he added.Angel gave a three-word update on her status
Meanwhile, Reese recently posted "In due time" on her "X" account. While she did not fly to Indianapolis with her team last weekend, Angel was a keen observer during the Sky's practice last Monday and was seen cheering on her teammates. The Sky will play the Connecticut Sun next Wednesday night, and it will be interesting to see if the forward travels with the team for that game.
Chicago is 1-10 in their last 11 games and is on pace to finish with their worst season since 2006, and with 13 games left to play in their regular season, many wonder if Reese has been shut down or will be, for the rest of the year, to fully recover.
Whitlock has a valid point in asking what is really wrong with Reese because it's unclear what's wrong with her back, but bringing up Kawhi Leonard was unnecessary. However, Kawhi is notorious for sitting out games to load manage and prevent injuries instead of recuperating from them, which could be what is going on with Angel right now. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

Akshay Bhatia gets back into top 30 in stunning fashion — with hole-out eagle and ace
Askhay Bhatia found his way back on the right side of the Tour Championship cutline — if only temporarily — during Saturday's third round of the BMW Championship, and he did so in stunning fashion. Bhatia started the week at 29th in the FedEx Cup playoff standings, meaning he was eligible for the season finale at East Lake, but after an opening round of 75, it appeared he might be losing his grasp on a spot. He fought back with a solid 69 on Friday, but then kick-started things on Saturday with a hole-out eagle on the par-4 7th. After a birdie on No. 8 and then bogeys on Nos. 12 and 15, Bhatia rolled in a birdie on the 16th hole, and then made some real magic on the par-3 17th. This shot on the 227-yard hole marked Bhatia's first hole-in-one in PGA competition, and it came at an important time, pushing the California native into the top 30. The 23-year-old Bhatia hit a rough patch this season and hadn't recorded a top-10 finish since March when he came up a shot short of a playoff at the Players Championship. But an opening-round 62 at the FedEx St. Jude led to a T-6 last week in the first playoff event and the two-time PGA Tour winner played himself into the final group on Sunday at the 3M Open with a third-round 63 even though he faltered on the final day, shooting 75 to tumble to T-25. Luka Dončić has knee collision scare during Eurobasket exhibition, but avoided serious injury
Luka Dončić put a scare into the Los Angeles Lakers and their fans, in addition to NBA followers, when he left Saturday's FIBA Eurobasket exhibition between Slovenia and Latvia with what appeared to be a knee injury. However, Dončić was apparently all right and wanted to return to the game, so the Lakers don't have to worry about their recent $165 million investment suffering a concerning injury as they plan a future beyond LeBron James. The play in question occurred in the third quarter when teammate Gregor Hrovat fell into Dončić's knee while backpedaling on defense. Dončić was planted in the lane, battling for position. Following the collision, Dončić sat down on a chair to compose himself though didn't appear to be in visible pain. Perhaps he was thinking about how fortunate it was that he didn't sustain a serious knee injury. However, Dončić did leave the game and go back to the locker room which immediately triggered the worst fears. He walked off the court without assistance but was favoring his right leg as he left. Dončić eventually returned from the locker room and appeared to be fine, wearing no wrap or brace as he sat on the bench still in full uniform. He wanted to return to the game, but the Slovenia medical staff recommended against it, according to the broadcast. The Athletic's Dan Wolke reported on social media that a source told him serious injury was avoided. In addition to his max contract extension, Dončić has made headlines this summer by improving his conditioning and diet, losing "significant weight" during offseason workouts. His leaning down earned him a cover story for "Men's Health," and he claims to have lost 31 pounds. Dončić and the Slovenian national team will begin official Eurobasket play when the tournament begins on Aug. 27. Slovenia will tip off against Poland on Aug. 28. Other NBA stars playing in the international tournament include Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Nikola Jokić (Serbia), Alperin Sengun (Türkiye), Lauri Markkanen (Finland) and Kristaps Porziņģis (Latvia).
