Virat Kohli walks up to Mayanti mid-celebrations; his stirring ‘touch the trophy' gesture leaves anchor misty-eyed

Hindustan Times04-06-2025
The IPL Trophy victory on Tuesday was not just for the Rajat Patidar-led side, which beat Punjab Kings by six runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, but for every player that has been part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru outfit over the last 18 years - Virat Kohli did not just say it, he meant it. And his gesture for broadcaster Mayanti Langer, whose husband Stuart Binny was part of the RCB outfit the last time they reached the final, left her misty-eyed.
In a clip that went viral on social media, midway through the celebrations, as the RCB players were going around the ground with the title, Kohli was seen taking the trophy from the hands of Jitesh Sharma and walked over to Mayanti and told her, 'touch the trophy'. The gesture left her emotional.
Binny, a Bengaluru boy himself, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2021, was part of the RCB team for two seasons. In his debut campaign, in 2016, RCB reached the final, but was denied the honour after losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Mayanti, too, has her connections to the city. Despite being originally from Delhi, she shifted her base to Bengaluru over a decade back. "I followed a boy to Bengaluru (laughs). When I met Stuart (cricketer Stuart Binny) and we started getting serious, we decided to stay together after we got engaged. That is how Bengaluru happened. I knew it was a long-term commitment; my husband got an apartment for us, and that is how I came to be here. I love the city, it has a charm about it," he had told Hindustan Times in an interview in 2021. "From Cubbon Park to Chinnaswamy Stadium, there are so many places that I've come to like, and we have a great group of friends here, so it feels like home," she added.
The Patidar-led team reached Bengaluru on Wednesday afternoon amid a roaring welcome from waiting fans, who lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the star-studded side. The state's Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, received the players at the airport.
The entire team will participate in a victory celebration at the Chinnaswamy Stadium at 5 PM. The celebration will begin with the much-anticipated open-top bus parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium.

Plenty to ponder for selectors

The Indian cricket selectors face some serious deliberations on Tuesday as they sit down to pick the squad for next month's Asia Cup in the UAE. The tournament is crucial as it will reveal the team's direction ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Most of the squad picks itself after India's triumphant T20 World Cup in June, but there are a few big questions: Should Test stars Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, both fine T20 players, be slotted in—risking a break in the settled line-up? Who will don the finisher's role? Should selectors go with an extra spinning all-rounder or a third specialist seamer? Spinning Options Given UAE's slow pitches, spinners will play a crucial role. Axar Patel (vice-captain, improved batting), Varun Chakravarthy (mystery spinner), and Kuldeep Yadav (wrist spin threat) are near-certainties. The debate is whether to add Washington Sundar, a handy all-rounder who can bowl in the PowerPlay and bat as a floater. Head coach Gautam Gambhir is fond of Sundar, which may tilt the decision in his favour. Middle-Order and Finisher Role The middle order looks settled with Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. The finisher's role, however, is open. Rinku Singh struggled against England earlier this year (39 runs in 3 innings). Jitesh Sharma, who had a strong IPL for RCB, could be preferred as a wicketkeeper-finisher. Gambhir, however, may still back Rinku for another chance. There's also buzz about Shreyas Iyer's return to T20s after a superb IPL with Punjab Kings. His experience against spin and big-match temperament make him a strong candidate. Fast Bowling Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are locks. The third pacer's slot will likely be between Prasidh Krishna (Purple Cap winner with 25 wickets) and Harshit Rana. Prasidh's packed schedule with upcoming Tests might push selectors to go with Rana to keep him fresh. Likely India Squad (15) Suryakumar Yadav (capt) Sanju Samson (wk) Abhishek Sharma Tilak Varma Hardik Pandya Shivam Dube Rinku Singh / Shreyas Iyer Axar Patel (vc) Varun Chakravarthy Kuldeep Yadav Washington Sundar / Ravi Bishnoi Jitesh Sharma (wk) / Dhruv Jurel (wk) Jasprit Bumrah Arshdeep Singh Harshit Rana / Prasidh Krishna

Shreyas Iyer "Not Liked As Much As...": On Asia Cup Snub Reason, Ex-India Coach Drops Bombshell

Shreyas Iyer 's omission from India's Asia Cup squad, announced by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav on Tuesday, took everyone by surprise. Iyer was not only India's top performer in the Champions Trophy triumph but also did exceptionally well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He led Punjab Kings from the front, taking them to the final, and scored 604 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 175.07. He was the sixth-highest scorer in IPL 2025. Despite such a rich form, Iyer does not find himself in the 15-member Asia Cup squad. He is not among the five standbys. Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar was unhappy with the treatment meted out to Shreyas Iyer. "I don't know, actually, I wanted to ask that question — aapke reserve players mein kaise nahi hai woh, if he is such a strong contender. Sometimes, you know, selection meetings can be quite interesting, and the discussions that happen in them can be very interesting," Nayar said on Star Sports. "But I can't fathom, and I don't understand, what reason can justify Shreyas Iyer not being part of that 20-member squad. I'm not even talking about the 15, I'm talking about the 20-member squad, which sends a message to Shreyas Iyer that he is not in the team's scheme of things. Because even if things don't work out, he is still not coming into the team. Either Riyan Parag is going to make the cut, or someone else is," he added. "So, the big question here is that maybe they are not looking at him from a T20 point of view — or perhaps any other point of view. But I always say this that any selection after a while is, 'who you like a little more than the other'. In that regard, maybe Shreyas Iyer is not liked as much as someone else. Maybe." BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Iyer will have to wait for his chance. "With regards to Shreyas, there's no fault of his — nor is it ours. It's just that we can only pick 15, and at the moment, he might have to wait for his chance," said Agarkar. "With regards to Yashasvi Jaiswal, it's just unfortunate again. Abhishek Sharma, with what he has done over the last few months — or a year or so that he has been with the team — plus the fact that he can bowl a little, gives us an option if required by the captain. One of these guys was always going to miss out. It's just unfortunate that Yashasvi might have to wait for his chance."

Dhanashree Slams Chahal's 'Sugar Daddy' Tshirt Stunt: 'Are Bhai WhatsApp Kar...'

Last Updated: Dhanashree Verma has broken silence on ex-husband Yuzvendra Chahal's 'be your own sugar daddy' T-shirt during their divorce hearing. Actress Dhanashree Verma has broken silence on her husband and Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal's tshirt 'stunt' during the court proceedings of their divorce in March. Chahal came to the final day wearing a black tshirt with 'Be Your Own Sugar Daddy' printed on it in a big font. Later, in a podcast, he said that he wanted to 'send a message' with it after 'something happened' from the other side. Now, Dhanashree, in an interview with India Today, taunted her ex-husband saying that he should have texted her on WhatsApp instead of that. She also said that she was aware that people would always blame her of the two. 'You know that people are going to blame you," Dhanashree said. 'Before I had even known that this T-shirt stunt had happened, we were all aware that people were going to blame me for this. Are bhai, WhatsApp kar deta. T-shirt kyu pehna hai? (You should have sent it on WhatsApp, why wear the T-shirt?)" she asked. Dhanashree and Chahal were said to be living separately for months before finally begining divorce proceedings. I was just howling and crying: Dhanashree on divorce verdict The actress revealed that she broke down before the final verdict on their divorce was given, unlike Chahal who 'walked out first, because she had stood up with the cricketer through every small or big thing. 'I still remember when I was standing there and the verdict was about to be given. Even though we were so well-prepared mentally, I got so emotional. I started howling in front of everybody. I couldn't even express what I was feeling at that point. I just remember that I just kept crying, I was just howling and crying. Of course! All of that happened, and he (Chahal) walked out first," Dhanashree said. 'You have to put in an effort. I know how much I have stood up for my partner, and everybody has seen that. Like for the smallest or biggest things, I have been there. Maybe because of that, my emotions came out. How you behave on that particular day is a reflection of you as a person." Chahal is currently out of the Indian team across formats. He reached the final of IPL 2025 with Punjab Kings. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
