Auto review: Struttin' down the runway in the stylish, Nissan Murano
Even coated in salt from a days' drive across Metro Detroit's wintry tundra, my Aurora Blue Pearl Metallic Murano looked ready for the Detroit Auto Show Charity Preview. Bezeled silver roofline like a Saarinen arch, muscular hips, slim front light signature over a lit lower grille (a touch of Ferrari Purosangue there?).
The Nissan Murano is lovely. Always has been. Since it strutted down the runaway as the first midsized crossover in 2003, it has put the "sport" in sport utility vehicles. Elegant lines, lush grilles, high-tech interiors, albino seats you want to lick they're so sweet.
Now in its fourth generation, the 2025 Murano is once again on the cutting edge of fashion, for good and ill.
For good, it has lost its voluptuous Rubensesque figure from the 2010s and emerged from the gym with a more svelte, athletic torso for the '20s. Cars are fashion, and this is the era of sleek iPhones and Teslas. So, too, the interior, which ditches the ol' vertical lines for lean, horizontal lines accented with high-tech screens and haptic touch controls.
For ill? Murano has conformed to the same common turbo-4 engine found in every other bot these days, from the Nissan Rogue SUV to the Hyundai Tucson to the Chevy Traverse. Sigh. Government emissions regulations force uniformity, and that works against elegant non-conformists like the Murano, which used to belt out healthy V-6 exhaust tunes.
As we danced across Huron River Parkway, I buried the throttle and ... oh. like watching Beyonce leaning into a chorus and Rosanne Barr's voice coming out.
The Ariya, Murano's fetching electric sister, boasts smooth torque that better complements its similarly exotic wardrobe - right down to the same twin screens and haptic wood dash accents. But that comfort becomes discomfort on a cold Michigan day, where 305-mile range drops 30% and the 270-mile trip to Nub's Nob suddenly looks challenging.
With 505 miles of gas range, the 27 mpg highway Murano is the safer date.
While I bemoan the absence of the optional 260-horse V-6, the 241-horse turbo-4 pairs with a smooth nine-speed transmission instead of the coarse, continuously-variable V-6 tranny of yore.
Speaking of yore, many Nissan shoppers will be empty nesters looking to downsize after years carting kiddies in a three-row Pathfinder or Armada. Murano is just the ticket. As is the subcompact Kicks, another stylish turbo-4 entry that is new for '25. Proving style doesn't sacrifice quality, both led their segments in J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, which tracked reliability over three years of ownership.
Both SUVs boast big backseats for leggy friends, but the Murano bring more sophistication for its higher price. The interior is a great place to spend time.
Start with "Zero Gravity" seats, which you'll want to rip out of the car and use in your living room they are so comfy. The leather-wrapped console is easy on the eyes - and my knobby knees that rested against the console for miles.
For ill? Ergonomics are a mixed bag. Steering wheel controls are superb, with raised buttons that you can adjust without your eyes leaving the road. However, Nissan chose a push-button console shift design that requires you to look away from the road to shift gears. Better that they had chosen a stalk shifter solution like Chevrolet if it was the console space-saver they were looking for. And that stylish haptic climate control? It also requires taking your eyes off the road.
For good, Murano is tech-tastic.
My list of safety must-haves - adaptive cruise control, blind spot-assist, rear-backup assist, are all standard. Google Built-in (standard on the SL trim and up) has good voice recognition abilities. So you change the temp by voice rather than haptic touch.
Hey, Google, turn the driver-side temperature to 70 degrees.
Done. I like a car with a sense of humor, and Murano knows dumb jokes.
Hey, Google, tell me a joke.
What's a pig's favorite karate move? A pork chop.
Boom. Murano has a deep bench of convenience settings. My favorite: it locks automatically when you walk away with key in pocket - or unlocks automatically as you approach. Just like a Tesla.
Unlike a Tesla: Nissan brings 360-degree camera innovation. Not only will its eight cameras provide a bird's-eye 360-degree view, but it offers multiple views, including the ability to see through your hood so you can perfectly place your tires in a parking spot or avoid parking-lot potholes. I'm not making this up.

My Murano tester was a top drawer, $51,415 all-wheel-drive Platinum model. But I'd recommend the SL, which allows you to option all the features above. Make mine an SL with standard Google Built-in, wireless charging, panoramic roof, all-wheel drive, 360-degree camera, plus ... Auria Blue Metallic paint ($425), spare tire ($180).
Boom. A state-of-the-art Murano for $47,950 that you'll never get tired of wearing.

Can New Nissan Leaf Restore Automaker's Electric Vehicle Leadership?
Tesla might be the poster child of the electric vehicle revolution, but the Nissan Leaf deserves equal credit for making EVs viable as everyday cars. But Nissan hasn't capitalized on its early lead with later electrified models, and has even been facing an economic crisis. Now the company has gone back to its electric roots with the third generation Nissan Leaf, which was unveiled at EVS 38 in Gothenburg in June. Is this a sign of a return to form? I talked to Nissan about how the new car could be part of a revival of fortunes for the company. Nissan Leaf: Back To Mainstream EVs? Nissan hasn't been sitting on its laurels. The company has produced a credible larger EV in the shape of the Ariya, targeting the lucrative premium mid-sized SUV market that has been dominated by Tesla's Model Y for a few years now. But despite the quality of this car, it hasn't made a huge impact on the market yet, although the recent huge price drops could make it much more popular in the UK. With the new, third generation Leaf, Nissan is hoping to hit a more everyday market than the Ariya. 'The outgoing Leaf was well appreciated because of its size, performance and price,' says Shunsuke Shigemoto, Vice President of ePowertrain Technology, Research, and Advanced Engineering, Nissan. He also argues that the size is just right for European roads. 'Cars are getting bigger, but the roads and parking spots aren't.' The new Leaf is about the same proportions as the previous model, although the design makes it look bigger. It's slightly shorter in length and height, but a little wider. Shigemoto argues that the new Leaf's practicality and technology are in a sweet spot. 'It's a compelling package that can go 600km, give or take.' The WLTP rating for the largest battery version (75kWh) is 604km (377 miles), which would imply high efficiency, although this hasn't been officially certified yet. 'The first Leaf was very much made for early adopters, tech- or environment-oriented people that were blind to all the downsides of EVs at the time,' adds Xavier Tesson, product planning director, EMEA, India and Oceania, Electric Vehicles, Nissan. With the new Leaf, Nissan didn't want the electric powertrain to be the focus anymore. 'It should be an EV, but accessible to everybody, and not just tech for tech's sake. We know that the Chinese are strong on tech, but it's very often disconnected from its actual usage. I could put my grandma [in the new Nissan Leaf], and she would be fine.' Building On The Nissan Leaf's 15-Year History Shigemoto argues that Nissan's long experience from the previous Leafs has given it an advantage with the new one. 'The 700,000 cars that we sold globally, but also the 290,000 that we sold in Europe, is a valuable asset in terms of technical knowledge and the engagement with our customers,' he says. 'We could design the new Leaf around what we have learned. We are also expecting customers that previously owned the Leaf to move to the new one, but also people who are driving an e-power [Nissan's serial hybrid technology]'What we are focusing on today is the design,' says Tesson. 'It's very much adapted to Europe. In the past, it was slightly different story, a bit more Japanese.' Nissan's use of assistance technology has been constrained by European regulations, but Tesson argues that the new Leaf will have as much new tech as possible. 'We have not just intelligent cruise control, but intelligent regen as well, maximizing the benefits of the system linked to navigation. It now predicts when the curves are coming, when the hills are coming, and it does this automatically, without any user input.' Drivers can still adjust regeneration themselves, though, and decide whether to engage Nissan's e-pedal single-pedal driving mode. Can The Nissan Leaf Beat Chinese Competition? However, the question remains whether Nissan can compete with the onslaught from Chinese EVs, particularly in the UK, which doesn't currently tariff automotive imports at the level of the EU or USA. 'Looking at the specifications, they are offering a compelling package at a price point,' says Shigemoto. 'But we also know that they are producing in China and then shipping to Europe. It does look like the 80s between Japan and the US. BYD has announced that they're going to put an industrial footprint in Europe, maybe other manufacturers will follow.' That will also change the prices the Chinese can offer, possibly erasing their cost advantage. 'But we still must be at the top of our game to compete with them.' 'It's not just the Chinese,' adds Tesson. 'We're going to have more Koreans, or even just historical European manufacturers.' In the UK, at least, the new Electric Car Grant that is awarded based on manufacturing carbon footprint could give Nissan an advantage. The Nissan Leaf will be produced in Sunderland, UK with many local components, making the supply chain extremely local. 'We produce the car in the UK,' says Shigemoto. 'Right across the road, we produce the battery, and we will also produce the three-in-one e-powertrain. We want to bring more suppliers to be in that industrial area in Sunderland. Our goal is carbon neutrality. It's not just about the battery EV technology itself.' However, Nissan isn't putting all its eggs in the EV basket either when it comes to powertrains. 'We have two pillars,' says Tesson. 'The first pillar is EVs like the Leaf. This is the car that will help all those EV-resistant people move from ICE to electric. Now we have a great package that really fits the needs of most of our customers. That's going to be our core model in the EV market, and it's just one of them. We're continuing Ariya. We announced Micra. Very soon, we are going to show [an electric] Juke. We are really coming strong with that EV offensive.' 'The second pillar is we've seen that electrification has slowed down quite a bit, but it's still going strong,' adds Tesson. 'So we have the second ICE pillar that we are strengthening as well. We're continuing with a double powertrain offer. We have a great powertrain, e-power, that we have on Qashqai and X-Trail. We have a great more standard hybrid with Juke. We are about to showcase our new third generation e-power on Qashqai, bringing it to the next level. The Chinese are coming strong, but they still don't know the European customers that well. We have that knowledge, and we're capable of having a double offer that really caters to both populations in Europe.' But the third generation Nissan Leaf is clearly a crucial product for the company's European business, as EVs continue to grow in market share in most countries. Cars will be imported from the UK to Europe, but not the USA. It's meant to hit a sweet spot of range, performance and technology for the European market, and even includes technical tricks like a 'motion frosting' sunroof that can darken in sections – something previously only seen on premium cars like the Lotus Emeya. 'We think the new Leaf is a compelling package,' says Shigemoto. 'If we can meet the price, it's going to be competitive. We're back in the game!'

The compact sedan segment isn't exactly thriving, but it still offers some of the best value in the industry. The Nissan Sentra rocks out with a sleek design that certainly looks more upscale than its price would suggest. While it's already one of the most affordable vehicles on the market, Nissan is making the Sentra even more enticing with some slick lease deals for August. For example, you could lease a 2025 Nissan Sentra for as little as $209 per month. This specific lease offer spans a 36-month term with an annual 10,000-mile allowance. While the Nissan Sentra comes in three trim levels, the mid-tier SV is the subject of most lease offers. New York City gets one of the best deals, with a monthly payment as low as $209 per month and a $3,329 down payment. Miami is close behind, with a Sentra SV for $229 per month and $3,378 due at signing. Detroit residents can get into a new Sentra for as little as $259 per month, with a $2,409 initial payment. Seattle and Denver share an identical lease offer: a Sentra SV for $269 per month, with $2,409 due at signing. The Nissan Sentra SV starts at $22,290, making it one of the more affordable compact cars in the industry, undercutting competitors that include heavyweights like the Honda Civic and Mazda 3. Better yet, it's a mid-level model, which means it includes a pretty sweet set of features. For the 2025 model year, the SV trim gets NissanConnect, which includes the automaker's app integration and Wi-Fi hotspot. The Nissan Sentra comes equipped with 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and a black grille with chrome accents. The body's sleek lines come together with the compact sedan's other amenities to create an upscale style that certainly doesn't look cheap. While the SV model features fairly standard equipment for its price tag, the sedan is available with several additional packages that add everything from heated front seats to a Bose premium sound system. Inside, the Sentra features front bucket seats wrapped in premium cloth. The compact car features a seven-inch driver information display and an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility come standard, as does a six-speaker audio system. The Sentra's trunk is fairly roomy, with up to 14.3 cu ft. of cargo space. While it may be affordably priced, the Sentra comes equipped with plenty of advanced safety systems, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane departure warning. The Nissan Sentra comes equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT that sends power to the front wheels. That combination produces 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque. The 2025 Sentra offers excellent fuel economy, earning up to 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Priced under $25,000, the Nissan Sentra is a solid budget-friendly sedan that's a great pick for both first-time buyers and those in need of a solid daily driver. While it won't make every commute a thrill ride, its efficient powertrain delivers excellent fuel economy. Two car crash in Solano County kills one person, injures several
One person was killed and several injured in a two car crash on Highway 12 in Solano County on Friday, the CHP said. The crash occurred at 5:03 p.m. when the driver of a tan Toyota Camry tried to pass a big-rig in the eastbound lanes of Highway 12 west of Highway 13 in Rio Vista, according to CHP Sgt. P. Crow. The driver swerved, lost control and entered the westbound lanes of Highway 12 where the Toyota was struck by an oncoming Nissan Pathfinder. The Toyota driver died at the scene and the passengers in the Nissan were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. KCRA-TV reported that the Nissan was carrying four occupants. The highway remained closed as the CHP investigated the crash. Lanes reopened at about 9:30 p.m.
