Star trainer combo Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott out to break Australasian Oaks drought
It is 24 years since Gai Waterhouse tasted success in the Australasian Oaks when Tempest Morn took out the 2000m Classic.
Now in a training partnership with Adrian Bott, the pair will have dual representation in Saturday's Group 1 contest for three-year-old fillies.
Too Darn Lizzie and Phenom will line up in the 16-horse strong field at Morphettville.
After three runs so far this campaign, Bott said the stable was prepared to roll the dice and try Too Darn Lizzie for the first time at 2000m on Saturday.
Too Darn Lizzie has placed in all three outings this campaign, all at Stakes level at Caulfield, Flemington and Moonee Valley respectively, but has not raced since The Valley effort when second in the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes (1600m).
'She's had a trial in between runs,' Bott said.
'Her form this time in has been excellent. The 2000 metres is new territory for her, but she's shown indications that she will handle that sort of trip and we have to take in her class as well.
'We always wanted to stretch her to a mile. We did that early in her three-year-old season and now she's had a couple of preparations and some grounding for it.
'Against her own age and sex, there's plenty there to suggest she will see it (2000m) out strongly.'
Phenom has had a slightly different campaign to her stablemate after starting the preparation in a Stakes race in Sydney before winning a benchmark race at Sandown in early March.
Waterhouse and Bott stepped the filly up to Stakes company again with a third-place finish in the Alexandra Stakes before running third in the Oaks lead-up, the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) at Morphettville on April 12.
Bott said Phenom had stayed on in Adelaide following that assignment to prepare for Saturday's Group 1 outing.
'She ran over 1800 metres last time and I thought she ran it out strongly after hitting a bit of a flat spot, or getting a little bit lost on the turn,' Bott said.
'She had raced that way of going, before but she seemed to get a little bit unbalanced and lost a bit of momentum, but she was very good through the line.
'Indications are that she should appreciate the 2000 metres as well.'
In form jockey Blake Shinn partners Too Darn Lizzie while leading South Australian jockey, apprentice Rochelle Milnes, will ride Phenom.

'I thought he was just a little bit plain but admittedly, he was first-up and he had to sit outside the leader. 'And it was a funny track that day, it was really gluey and a lot of horses didn't like it so I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that those couple of things might have played against him. 'I think he is a better horse than he went the other day so I am wanting to see him bounce back and do something there on Tuesday.' It Stays In Vegas is a third generation Australian thoroughbred but does indeed have some American blood and via the likes of two epic stallions, one of them an immortal. His third dam was a daughter of Seeking The Gold while her fourth was by Seattle Slew, who this week 48 years ago, completed the US Triple Crown by winning the Belmont Stakes. Singleton, meanwhile, has the honour and distinction of saddling up one of the shortest-priced favourites racing at Scone on Tuesday in Ritzsun ($1.85) in the third race on the eight-event program. Ritzsun has been a model of consistency throughout his nine starts, winning twice (both of them at Scone) together with four placings, three of them seconds. The son of Rosebud winner Sebring Sun's most recent performance was a brave and determined on-pace second in the 1200m TAB Highway conducted at Gosford on the Gold Cup and The Coast day. His Tuesday assignment is the Scone CWA Centenary Benchmark 82 Handicap (1000m). 'Up in grade but down in weight,'' Singleton said. 'He's in an 82 there but he is only carrying 55(kg) so from a good draw and the way he has been working, I would be expecting him to win to be honest.' Ritzsun has already contested three Highways inside his nine starts and win, lose or draw on Tuesday, there will be a fourth somewhere down the road. 'That would be the plan,'' Singleton said. 'He has only won the two (races) so he can win again and still go to a Highway. 'He is definitely good enough to win a Highway if all the stars align.' Singleton is naturally eager for the well-bred mare Insightful Award to post her fourth win in the Darley Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Handicap (1300m) having placed at two of her last three 'away' runs. 'I am hoping that given when she won at Scone earlier in the prep, she bolted in, and that was down to the home-track and she can repeat that because it sort of came from nowhere,'' Singleton said. 'But she has remained in good order. 'She a little bit keen the other day at Warren but she certainly seems in good shape and she'll run well.' 'It's got to be confirmed and agreed by the boss … Memsie (Stakes), Makybe (Diva Stakes), Turnbull (Stakes) and they're deciding whether she goes to the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate,' Laurie said. Treasurethe Moment has won nine of 11 starts in a stellar career to date, including the Group 1 VRC Oaks, Vinery Stud Stakes and Australian Oaks. Sun Setting finished second in two summer outings at Mornington before a short break. The promising daughter of Pierata returned with a Moe maiden win and repeated the effort last start on Mornington home turf. 'She's going really well and she looks well placed,' Laurie said. 'I don't know what price she is but she'd be short enough … I thought no point running them against each other (Soft Love and Sun Setting), as they were both good chances. 'I think she would've given the Flemington race a good shake … we thought a midweek meeting at Mornington, where she has run well before, was a smart move.'
