Omar Abdullah grappled by J&K cops as he tries to visit martyrs' grave
In a video he shared on his X account, he can be seen walking towards the graveyard with security personnel. Upon reaching there, he climbed the wall to enter the graveyard as the gate appeared to be locked.
'Paid my respects & offered Fatiha at the graves of the martyrs of 13th July 1931. The unelected government tried to block my way forcing me to walk from Nawhatta chowk. They blocked the gate to Naqshband Sb shrine forcing me to scale a wall. They tried to physically grapple me but I was not going to be stopped today,' he said in a post on X.
In another video, police personnel can be seen trying to restrict him from entering.
Sharing a video of the incident, he further wrote, 'This is the physical grappling I was subjected to but I am made of sterner stuff & was not to be stopped. I was doing nothing unlawful or illegal. In fact these 'protectors of the law' need to explain under what law they were trying to stop us from offering Fatiha.'
Many prominent leaders of the Union Territory were kept under house arrest on Sunday, prohibiting them from paying their respects on July 13, which is considered Martyrs Day in the UT, PTI reported.
Abdullah also alleged that when he expressed his desire to offer prayer at the graveyard on Sunday, bunkers were set up to stop him.
'It is sad that on the instructions of the people who claim that their responsibility is the security and 'law and order, we were not allowed to offer 'fateha' here. We were kept in house arrest (on Sunday). When gates opened, I expressed to the control room my desire to offer fateha. Within minutes, bunkers were put up and they were not removed late into the night,' Abdullah told reporters, as quoted by PTI.
What happened on July 13?
On July 13, 1931, a group of Kashmiris gathered outside Srinagar Central Jail to protest the trial of Abdul Qadeer, who called on Kashmiris against Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh. However, Singh's forces opened fire at them. In total, 22 people were killed.
Since then, July 13 has been observed as Martyrs' Day in Jammu and Kashmir to honour those who lost their lives. It used to be a public holiday before the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into two UTs in August 2019. The administration dropped the day from the list of gazetted holidays in 2020, PTI reported.

Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the Congress did not raise the issue of restoration of statehood at the recent INDIA bloc meeting . US govt employee banned from leaving China
Agency: PTI Washington, Jul 22 (AP) A US government employee has been banned from leaving China after travelling there in a personal capacity, the State Department said Tuesday, marking the latest case where Beijing has stopped US nationals from departing the country. The State Department did not reveal the identity of the employee at the US Patent and Trademark Office, which is part of the Commerce Department, but said it is 'tracking this case very closely" and that it is engaged with Chinese officials to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. 'The Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens," it said. The Chinese government restricts people from leaving the country if they are involved in investigations, including business disputes, but it has been accused of using the tool to arbitrarily keep both Chinese and foreign nationals in the country. China's use of the exit ban and other concerns previously prompted the State Department to tell Americans to reconsider travel to China. The travel advisory was only eased in November after China released three US citizens who were detained for years. It's one of the latest instances of such travel restrictions. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Chenyue Mao, a US-based Wells Fargo banker, was blocked from leaving China, prompting the bank to suspend all travel to the country. Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, said Mao is 'involved in a criminal case currently being handled by Chinese law-enforcement authorities" and that she is 'subject to exit restrictions in accordance with the law". 'Let me stress that it is an individual judicial case," Guo said. 'China will as always welcome people from all countries to travel and do business in China and ensure their rights and interests in accordance with the law." Asked about the case involving the US government employee, Guo said: 'I have no details to share. China upholds the rule of law and handles entry and exit affairs in accordance with the law." Other Americans have faced China's exit ban. Two American siblings were only allowed to leave China in 2021 after they were stranded there for three years after visiting their relatives. Cabinet clears UK FTA ahead of PM's London visit; deal text expected this week
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UK this week, where he is expected to formally sign the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with his counterpart Keir Starmer, the Cabinet on Tuesday approved the deal. While the deal was announced on May 6, the text of the agreement was due to be released as legal scrubbing was ongoing. The formal signing is expected on June 24 in the UK, where PM Modi will be accompanied by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The Cabinet decision, PTI reported, comes ahead of Modi's four-day visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives from Wednesday. However, the agreement will come into effect only after it is also passed by the British Parliament. The signing of the deal comes after a period of significant political turmoil in the UK over the past three years, during which London saw three different Prime Ministers. The deal was finally announced after the Starmer-led Labour Party secured a landslide election victory. For India, the UK deal is the first major trade agreement with a Western country since New Delhi decided to quit negotiations to enter the China-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in 2019. While the agreement is expected to open the UK market for Indian textile and leather products, the deal text will reveal how India addressed the looming concern over the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which is expected to significantly impact India's metal exports to the UK. The UK deal assumes significance as it marks the beginning of integration between the advanced services sector in the UK and that of India. India has also opened its doors to high-end British cars and whisky, albeit in a phased manner. The India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) ensures comprehensive market access for goods across all sectors, covering all of India's export interests. India will gain from tariff elimination on approximately 99 per cent of tariff lines, covering nearly 100 per cent of trade value — offering opportunities to boost bilateral trade between India and the UK, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said. The pact includes chapters on goods, services, innovation, government procurement, and intellectual property rights. The two countries have also concluded negotiations on the Double Contribution Convention Agreement, or social security pact. It would help avoid double contributions to social security funds by Indian professionals working for a limited period in Britain. However, talks on the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) are still ongoing. Government officials have pointed out that the India-UK trade deal is also significant as it is one of the most comprehensive free trade agreements that India has entered into so far and could serve as a template for future engagements, including the multiple trade deals currently under negotiation — such as the complex agreement with the European Union. The Ministry had said that the UK FTA will ease mobility for professionals, including contractual service suppliers; business visitors; investors; intra-corporate transferees; partners and dependent children of intra-corporate transferees with the right to work; and independent professionals such as yoga instructors, musicians and chefs. India's exports to the UK rose by 12.6 per cent to $14.5 billion, while imports grew by 2.3 per cent to $8.6 billion in 2024–25. Bilateral trade between India and the UK increased to $21.34 billion in 2023–24 from $20.36 billion in 2022–23.
