Sony Animation's 'KPop Demon Hunters' Rises To Netflix's Most-Watched Original Animated Film Of All Time

Geek Culture30-07-2025
It seems slaying charts and demons is no longer a thing of fiction for Sony Animation. The studio's surprise animated hit, Kpop Demon Hunters , has become the most-watched original film in Netflix history after achieving two major milestones: topping the streamer's chart in 41 countries in its opening week and reclaiming the No. 1 spot in its fourth week of release.
More impressively, the movie continued to enjoy a rise in viewership during a time when it would typically be on a decline, chalking up another 26.3 million views for the period of 21 to 27 July and marking its sixth week in the top 10 charts. As of the time of writing, it now stands at No. 2 globally on the English Film list, behind the Adam Sandler-starring pic Happy Gilmore 2 .
'It's the moment! KPop Demon Hunters is Netflix's most-watched original animated film of ALL TIME,' reads the official announcement post on X/Twitter.
The catchy music used in and written for the musical adventure is also holding its reign across various charts. 'Kpop Demon Hunters' is the highest-charting soundtrack of 2025 so far, with the majority of its songs currently on the Billboard Hot 100, including the first-place 'Golden' and 'Takedown', the opening number performed by popular girl group Twice's Jeongyeon, Chaeyeong, and Jihyo.
Directed by Maggie Kang, who was head of story for The Lego Ninjago Movie , Kpop Demon Hunters centres on a fictional K-pop girl group, HUNTR/X (pronounced 'Huntrix'), who lead double lives as demon hunters, and face off against a rival boy band called Saja Boys, whose members are secretly demons. While primarily in English, it includes Korean dialogue and cultural nods, including dokkaebi, or goblins, the jeoseung saja, the Korean equivalent of the grim reaper (and the inspiration behind Saja Boys), and real-world locations like Namsan Park.
Arden Cho ( Teen Wolf ), May Hong ( High Maintenance ), and Ji-young Yoo ( Moxie ) lead the voice cast as vocalist and overall leader Rumi, visual-slash-main-dancer Mira, and rapper Zoey, respectively. The trio are joined by other notable industry faces, such as Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun as antagonist Gwi-ma, actor-singer Ahn Hyo-seop ( Business Proposal ) as Jinu, leader of the Saja Boys, Daniel Dae Kim ( Hawaii Five-O ) as Healer Han, and Ken Jeong ( Crazy Rich Asians ) as Bobby, the manager and main representative of HUNTR/X.
Renowned K-pop producer Teddy Park contributed to the soundtrack with his work on 'Golden', Soda Pop', and more, while previous songs like Exo's 'Love Me Right', Twice's 'Strategy, and MeloMance's 'Love Maybe', which most would recognise from the Korean drama Business Proposal , were also featured in the film.
The popularity of KPop Demon Hunters caught the world by storm, owing to striking visuals, an interesting premise, and a blend of humour and emotional moments. It has been well-received by audiences and critics alike, scoring 97 per cent critic score and 92 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.7 average rating on IMDb.
Rotten Tomatoes describes its story as follows:
'When they aren't selling out stadiums, K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat,' a description of the film from Rotten Tomatoes reads. 'Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet — an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise.'

Netflix ‘One Piece' Season 2 Teases 'Something Big Approaching'

Nakama, raise the sails! It's time to head to the Grand Line! Fans of Netflix's One Piece will be over the moon to know that the Straw Hat Pirates will be returning soon in season two of the live-adaptation of the popular eponymous manga by Eiichiro Oda. While not much information has been released, Netflix has officially shared another glimpse of the Straw Hats. The image depicts Nami (Emily Rudd, Fear Street ), Sanji (Taz Skylar, Gassed Up ), Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy, The Imperfects ), Roronoa Zoro (Arata Mackenyu, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final ) and Usopp (Jacob Gibson, Greenleaf ) onboard their crew's ship, the Going Merry. (L to R) Emily Rudd's Nami, Taz Skylar's Sanji, Iñaki Godoy's Luffy, Arata Mackenyu's Zoro and Jacob Gibson's Usopp onboard the Going Merry in Netflix's One Piece Season Two On top of that, Netflix has teased a major reveal ahead of One Piece Day, an annual event that celebrates all things One Piece and will take place in Tokyo this year from 9 to 10 August. In their Instagram reveal of the Straw Hats, they shared the following caption: 'Can you feel it in the wind, Nakama? 🌊 The seas are restless and rumours from the Grand Line speak of something BIG approaching for ONE PIECE DAY! 😆🏴‍☠️ Trust us, you'll want to be aboard when it hits!' While no additional details have been revealed, there has still been a great deal of information for fans to chew on while awaiting the Straw Hats' return. A statement by Oda himself has revealed that Season Two will follow the Straw Hat Pirates as they journey through the Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island arcs. Though this remains as a great deal of source material for the show to work with, with Oda himself helming the project as an executive producer, as well as a production team who, by Oda's own admission, is committed to produce a show that will meet his standards, Season Two is likely to be just as big of a hit as Season One was. Eiichiro Oda's Executive Producer chair on the set of Netflix's One Piece Season Two In fact, with Oda present for the filming of Season Two this time, having made the journey to Cape Town, South Africa, to be on the set, fans can rest assured that the newly cast members and upcoming season will perfectly embody the vision that the manga's creator himself had. 'Seeing them all in person convinced me: they were absolutely the perfect choice!' said Oda, in an illustrated letter to the series' dedicated fans. 'Trust me, this is going to surpass Season 1! Stay tuned for Season 2!' The new season will primarily see the Straw Hat Pirates taking the perilous journey over Reverse Mountain to enter the Grand Line, the most dangerous sea in the One Piece world. Home to unpredictable phenomena and the world's most powerful pirate crews and organisations, the Grand Line will bring our Straw Hats face to face with the powerful criminal syndicate, Baroque Works, led by one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Sir Crocodile, also known as Mr. 0 within his organisation, played by Joe Manganiello ( Magic Mike XXL ). Joe Manganiello Other than Manganiello, Mikaela Hoover ( Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Superman ) joins the cast as Straw Hat Pirates' reindeer doctor, Tony Tony Chopper. Executive members of the Baroque Works, also known as Agents, have also been cast, with Lera Abova ( Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin ) as the intriguing Miss All-Sunday, partner to Mr. 0, Charithra Chandran ( Bridgerton ) as Miss Wednesday, Yonda Thomas ( Redemption ) as Mr. 8, Sophia Anne Caruso ( The School for Good and Evil ) as Miss Goldenweek, Daniel Lasker ( Raised by Wolves ) as Mr. 9, Camrus Johnson ( Batwoman ) as Mr. 5, Jazzara Jaslyn ( Warrior ) as Miss Valentine and David Dastmalchian ( The Suicide Squad ) as Mr. 3. In addition, other notable characters have also joined the roster, with Rigo Sanchez ( Outer Banks, Goliath ) playing the mysterious Dragon, Katey Sagal ( Sons of Anarchy, The Conners ) as Dr. Kureha, Mark Harelik ( Presumed Innocent, Preacher ) as Dr. Hiriluk, Werner Coetser ( Getroud met rugby ) as Dorry, co-captain of the Giant Warrior Pirates, Brendan Murray ( Raised by Wolves ) as Brogy, co-captain of the Giant Warrior Pirates, Clive Russell ( Game of Thrones ) as Crocus, Callum Kerr ( Monarch ) as Captain Smoker of the Marines, Julia Rehwald ( Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures ) as Master Chief Petty Officer Tashigi of the Marines, and Rob Colletti ( The Many Saints of Newark ) as Wapol, King of Drum Kingdom. Filming for Season 2 has officially wrapped, and Netflix has confirmed the release has been set for 2026. In the meantime, Mugiwara fans will simply have to hold on to their straw hats and sit tight on the masthead, for the journey will soon begin. ‘Superman' Soars Past 'Man of Steel' US Box Office, Is First DC Film To Hit US$300 Million Domestically In Years

In another major victory for DC Studios, James Gunn's Superman has reached new heights of success after surpassing US$500 million at the global box office. The latest comic book adventure is now the first DC film to cross the domestic tally of US$300 million in three years, with The Batman grossing US$369.2 million at the end of its run. Notably, the milestone puts it ahead of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel , which accumulated US$291 million in 2013, not adjusted for inflation. It should be noted that the overtaking only applies to the domestic market, as the latter stands at US$670.1 million worldwide. The Henry Cavill-starring pic was also the last solo outing for the Last Son of Krypton, who returned to the big screen in the 2016 sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . If all goes well, Superman will soon overtake its domestic haul of US$330.4 million as well. Now in its fourth weekend, Junn's film joins Warner Bros.' A Minecraft Movie , Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch , and Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth in the US$300 million club, becoming only the fourth title of 2025 to do so. The road ahead may not be as smooth-sailing, however, as it continues to face competition from F1: The Movie , which has veered past US$500 million globally, and of course, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps . By all accounts, both superhero tentpoles are a hit among audiences and critics alike, each scoring an A on CinemaScore. On Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel's latest is currently in the lead with 86 per cent and 91 per cent from critics and audiences, respectively, versus 83 per cent and 91 per cent for Superman . Comic book enthusiasts are the real winners, either way. Superman has certainly borne fruit for DC Studios, living up to sky-high expectations as the launchpad to Chapter One of the rebooted cinematic universe. In it, David Corenswet ( Pearl ) takes on the role of the titular character, with Rachel Brosnahan ( The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ) portraying The Daily Planet journalist and Superman's love interest, Lois Lane. Meanwhile, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is directed by WandaVision 's Matt Shakman and serves as the 37th title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It stars Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us ) as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby ( The Crown ) as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach ( The Bear ) as Ben Grimm / The Thing, and Joseph Quinn ( Stranger Things 4 ) as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, eschewing their origin stories for a new adventure in the retro-futuristic setting of an alternate universe known as Earth-828.
