Daily Mail2 days ago
A 33-year-old man has been charged with violent disorder and criminal damage following clashes outside an Essex migrant hotel.
Eight police officers were injured during what started as a peaceful protest at the Bell Hotel in Epping on Thursday evening.
Keith Silk, 33, of Torrington Drive, Loughton, was arrested on Saturday, Essex Police said.
The force said today the CPS had authorised police to charge Silk with one count of violent disorder and one count of criminal damage.
He was remanded into custody and will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
Essex Police said: 'Our investigations into the incidents which followed a peaceful protest in Epping on Thursday evening are continuing at pace and we thank the public for sharing vital information.'
Thursday's demonstration was the latest in a series of protests outside the hotel after 38-year-old asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu was charged with sexual assault following an incident where he is alleged to have attempted to kiss a 14-year-old girl.
He denied the offences when he appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Thursday, July 10.
Kebatu was charged with three counts of sexual assault, as well as one count of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity and one count of harassment without violence.
Up to 100 police officers battled with anti-migrant protesters on Thursday who had confronted a counter an anti-racism demonstration.
Police on patrol also arrested a man on suspicion of affray, following an assault reported close to The Bell Hotel on Sunday evening.
Dean Walters, 65, of Harlow, has been charged and released on bail to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on September 24, with stringent conditions until then.
A second person was arrested on Thursday night for failing to comply with orders given around dispersal and remained in custody.
At the protest residents stood side-by-side to call for the hotel to stop operating as refugee accommodation.
Police say eight officers were assaulted when crowds surrounded a small counter-demonstration.
Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow said: 'The events in Epping on Thursday were shocking and have no place in our neighbourhoods.
'We understand the concerns of the local community and support everyone's right to peaceful protest.
'We police without fear or favour, remaining impartial at all times and have legal responsibilities to ensure peaceful protest is facilitated.
'Our priority during the policing of this incident was the safety of everyone there, we used tried and tested public order tactics to achieve this.
'This included keeping opposing protestors apart to avoid violence. The early protest was peaceful, with people expressing their views.
'We will continue to support people to do this, but we will not tolerate anyone who comes with the intent to commit crime or who resort to crime because others present take a different view to them.
'Officers will act robustly and swiftly towards anyone intent on disrupting the local community's right to have their voices heard.'

Mike Lynch's £700m payment to HP explained

A London High Court judge ruled that Hewlett Packard (HP) will recoup over £700 million from the estate of the late Mike Lynch and his former business partner, Sushovan Hussain. The sum relates to HP's ill-fated 2011 acquisition of British software firm Autonomy, which HP claimed was based on an inflated valuation due to fraud. HP had accused Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain of orchestrating an elaborate fraud before the $11.1 billion purchase, a deal that subsequently unravelled. A judge had previously ruled in HP's favour in 2022, with this week's decision determining the specific damages owed. Dr Lynch, who died last year, consistently maintained his innocence and was acquitted of related criminal charges in the US.

Prince William and Harry's cousin found dead at her family home

Prince William and Prince Harry's cousin who was found dead at her family home was a 'darling daughter' and 'incredible sister', a tribute said. Rosie Jeanne Burke Roche, who was the granddaughter of Princess Diana 's uncle, was found dead by her mother and sister at her home in Norton, near Malmesbury in Wiltshire, on July 14. The 20-year-old had been studying English Literature at Durham University and was found after she had been packing for a trip away with friends. An inquest was opened at Wiltshire and Swindon coroner's court on Sunday and adjourned until October 25. There are no suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement, police said. A coroner told The Independent the cause of death was a 'traumatic head injury'. A death notice in the Yorkshire Post said: 'Roche, Rosie Jeanne Burke. Died on Monday 14th July 2025. 'Darling daughter of Hugh and Pippa, incredible sister to Archie and Agatha, granddaughter to Derek and Rae Long. 'Private family funeral. A memorial service will be held at a later date.' The first-year student was a descendant of the Barons Fermoy and the eldest child of Edmund Hugh Burke Roche, 53, and his wife the former Phillipa Kate Victoria Long. Ms Roche's grandfather was the 5th Baron Fermoy – Princess Diana's uncle – who died in 1984. Professor Wendy Powers, the principal of University College, said staff and students are 'extremely saddened' by her death. She said: 'Rosie had settled into the University and College beautifully and had lots of friends. 'She was loved for her creativity, energy, her love of books, poetry and travel among many other talents. She will be sorely missed. 'Our thoughts and condolences are with Rosie's family and friends, and we are offering support to those affected at this extremely difficult time'. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the death of Ms Roche. A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: 'There are no suspicious circumstances, and our thoughts are with her family. 'We would ask that their privacy is respected at this terrible time.' Ms Roche's death comes after Thomas Kingston, Lady Gabriella Windsor's husband, died from a head injury, with a gun found near his body at his parents' home in the Cotswolds, last February. In January an inquest heard he had been prescribed drugs to treat depression by a GP at the Royal Mews Surgery, a practice at Buckingham Palace, after struggling to sleep following stress at work. Watch: Kentucky cops beat protesters demonstrating against ICE arrest of hospital chaplain

This is the moment Kentucky police were captured beating anti-ICE demonstrators. Demonstrators gathered on Roebling Bridge, which links Kentucky and Ohio in Cincinnati, to protest the detainment of a former hospital chaplain on Thursday (17 July). Roughly 100 people joined the demonstration, according to TMZ. Video of the incident shows a Covington police officer repeatedly punching a protester in the head even after he is brought to the ground with the help of another officer. Police have said the man tried to grab the officer's weapon, but he has denied that claim. Other officers on the bridge can be seen tasing a woman before wrestling her to the ground by the back of her head. Protesters are heard screaming for the officers to stop. Authorities arrested 15 people for felony rioting and various misdemeanor charges, per TMZ.
