Air Arabia, Nesma Group, KUN Holding consortium win bid to establish new low-cost carrier
The airline aims to enhance domestic and international air connectivity for the Eastern Province.
This win marks the culmination of a shared vision and strategic partnership among the three parties, focused on delivering an efficient operating model that supports the objectives of the Aviation program goals, improves service quality for travelers, and contributes to driving national economic growth.
Adel Al Ali, Group Chief Executive Officer of Air Arabia, stated, 'We are proud to have been selected by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) to launch a new national low-cost airline headquartered in Dammam. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Authority for its trust in us. As a leading low-cost airline operator in the region, this achievement represents a key milestone that reaffirms our commitment to supporting the growth and development of the Kingdom's aviation sector. Through our proven economic model and regional expertise, this new partnership will deliver a reliable and value-driven travel experience for passengers and will contribute to economic growth and job creation in the Eastern Province and beyond.'
Faisal Bin Saleh Al-Turki, President of Nesma Group, and Mohamed Bin Nabil Hefni, CEO of KUN Holding, added, 'At Nesma and KUN, we are proud to be part of this ambitious national initiative, which is the result of a strategic partnership with Air Arabia Group. This initiative aligns with the impressive developments in the Kingdom's tourism and aviation sectors. Launching a new low-cost carrier from Dammam is not merely an air transport project, but a direct contribution to strengthening the tourism infrastructure and stimulating the local economy of the Eastern Province. This includes creating high-quality jobs, empowering national talent, and supporting aviation-related commercial activities. We believe this project reflects the private sector's role in supporting the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and embodies the spirit of partnership between the public and private sectors to achieve transformative strides in sustainable development. We look forward to this carrier becoming a model of local and international collaboration, strengthening the Kingdom's position as a leading regional and global tourism destination.'
The new national low-cost carrier is targeting to operate 24 domestic and 57 international destinations with 45 aircraft by 2030, aiming to serve around 10 million passengers annually from Dammam and the Eastern Province. The project is projected to create over 2,400 direct jobs in the aviation sector and significantly contribute to tourism growth and local economic development in the region.

UAE secures top spot in global AI talent rankings
The UAE has been ranked among the world's top 20 nations for artificial intelligence (AI) talent density, alongside Saudi Arabia, in the latest Global AI Competitiveness Index published by the International Finance Forum (IFF) and Deep Knowledge Group (DKG). With 0.7 per cent of the global AI talent pool, the UAE has outpaced countries such as Italy and Russia — affirming its growing stature as a global innovation powerhouse. While much of the spotlight has been on Saudi Arabia's ambitious AI push, the UAE's AI ecosystem has quietly gained strength through long-term strategic investments, visionary policymaking, and global partnerships that position it at the forefront of AI development and governance. The UAE's focus on AI began with the launch of the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031, which aimed to integrate AI across key sectors including education, healthcare, transport, and space. The country was among the first in the world to appoint a Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in 2017, and today it continues to expand AI readiness through initiatives such as the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) — a graduate-level, research-centric university that is already attracting global talent and publishing cutting-edge research. MBZUAI is currently ranked among the world's top 50 institutions in AI research output, and is collaborating with global tech giants including IBM, NVIDIA, and BCG to foster research in machine learning, robotics, computer vision, and AI ethics. 'The UAE's ecosystem is built not just on infrastructure, but on a vision of ethical AI, global cooperation, and a diversified economy driven by knowledge and innovation,' said Dr. Eric Xing, President of MBZUAI. The IFF report underscores the UAE's growing influence in global AI competitiveness by evaluating not only talent density but also the nation's institutional and innovation performance. The UAE ranked well above many traditional tech economies in per capita AI talent and research productivity, due in part to its business-friendly environment, tax-free salaries, and quality of life — factors that attract leading scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs from around the world. The report's co-author Dmitry Kaminskiy of Deep Knowledge Group remarked: 'Saudi Arabia and the UAE's strategic focus on AI, coupled with visionary investments in talent and infrastructure, is setting the stage for a tectonic shift in global AI leadership.' According to the UAE's Ministry of Economy, the nation aims to increase the AI sector's contribution to GDP by up to 14 per cent by 2030 — translating to over $100 billion in economic output. Much of this is being driven by AI applications in logistics, government services, fintech, and smart city solutions, especially in hubs like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Dubai Future Foundation, for instance, is pioneering large-scale AI use cases in government and urban mobility through its Dubai AI Roadmap. Similarly, Abu Dhabi's Hub71 and its partnership with global VCs and accelerators has made the UAE one of the fastest-growing AI startup ecosystems in the region. As per data from Crunchbase and Startup Genome, AI-focused startups in the UAE raised more than $1.3 billion in venture capital in 2024 alone, with projections pointing to a 25 per cent increase in funding in 2025. While Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in infrastructure-led projects like NEOM — where over 30 per cent of its $500 billion budget is earmarked for AI-powered technologies — the UAE's strength lies in policy innovation and ecosystem-building. This complementary approach is helping the broader Gulf region gain momentum as a global AI innovation corridor. 'The UAE provides a unique balance of global accessibility, talent development, and future-ready governance,' noted Professor Patrick Glauner, IFF AI committee coordinator. 'Its neutral diplomatic positioning and strong ties with both Western and Eastern tech partners make it a magnet for cross-border AI collaboration.' At the heart of this transformation is the battle for AI talent. The UAE's efforts in creating AI labs, reskilling programmes like the National Program for Coders, and special visas for AI professionals are enhancing its ability to attract and retain global talent.

UAE airports drive regional air travel resilience in first half
The International Air Transport Association (Iata) reported that global air travel demand, measured by revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), increased by 2.6 per cent in June 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year. Capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASK), grew by 3.4 per cent, leading to a slight drop in global load factors to 84.5 per cent — a decline of 0.6 percentage points while remaining near historic highs. International RPK climbed 3.2 per cent year-on-year, with load factors dipping to 84.4 per cent, and domestic demand rose 1.6 per cent with a load factor of 84.7 per cent . Despite these global figures, demand from the Middle East contracted: RPK was down 0.2 per cent amid capacity expansion of 1.6 per cent, dropping load factor for regional carriers to roughly 78.3 per cent. On international routes, Middle East airlines saw RPK decline by 0.4 per cent with capacity up 1.1 per cent, translating into load factors around 78.7 per cent. Traffic on routes to North America fell by 7.0 per cent and to Europe by 4.4 per cent year-on-year — impacts attributed largely to recent military conflict and resulting flight disruptions. Nevertheless, the Middle Eastern aviation sector demonstrated resilience during H1 2025, largely thanks to strong performance at key UAE airports. At Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest international hub, passenger volume reached a record‑breaking 46 million in the first half, registering a 2.3 per cent increase year‑on‑year despite regional airspace turbulence. Average monthly traffic stood at approximately 7.7 million passengers, with January alone welcoming 8.5 million. April was the busiest month of the quarter, serving 8 million travellers. DXB handled roughly 222,000 flights and processed 41.8 million bags — 91 per cent delivered within 45 minutes of arrival, and baggage mishandling rates remained low at 2 per 1,000 passengers versus an industry average of 6.3. Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport (AUH) also posted strong growth, welcoming over 15.8 million passengers during H1, reflecting a significant 13.1 per cent year-on-year rise. This demonstrates the strengthening of secondary hubs across the UAE and diversification in passenger traffic sources. Industry experts say these figures reflect robust operational capabilities in the UAE and continued demand even in a challenging geopolitical environment. Aviation analyst Manoj K. John of AeroConnections, commented: 'UAE airports have shown exceptional agility. Despite regional disruptions, the ability to reroute flights, maintain high efficiency, and sustain passenger volumes underlines the maturity of their infrastructure.' Another independent consultant Shakir Kantawala of Dubai-based WingsWay added: 'DXB and AUH continue to capitalise on strong connectivity to South Asia, Europe, and emerging markets. Their diversified route networks have cushioned the impact of short‑term demand shocks.' Looking at broader Middle East demand trends, the contraction in June followed a rebound in May, when the region's international RPK growth was about 9.7 per cent year‑on‑year. The slowdown highlights the volatility introduced by regional conflict, yet regional carriers remain central to global aviation recovery with strong profit margins forecast into 2025. Willie Walsh, Iata's director general, underscored that global load factors remain healthy and predicted modest capacity expansion through August, suggesting that performance will remain close to record levels through the Northern Hemisphere summer: 'Demand growth lagged capacity expansion, yet at 84.5 per cent globally, airlines continue to operate at very high efficiency.' Middle East airlines continue to play a vital role in global aviation economics. Air transport contributes approximately $290 billion annually to the regional GDP and supports four million jobs — equivalent to one job in every 20 people in the region. Analysts said that the passenger base at Dubai airports remained strong despite temporary airspace closures between Iran and Israel. They projected that DXB would serve 96 million passengers by the end of 2025 and reach 100 million in 2026 as capacity constraints at DXB ultimately shift traffic toward Al Maktoum International Airport. DWC itself saw a 36.4 per cent surge in traffic during the period, reflecting expansion ahead of DWC becoming Dubai's main airport by 2032. While June saw cooling demand across the Middle East tied to external disruptions, UAE airports upheld growth. DXB and AUH recorded strong half-year gains, offsetting regional softness and positioning the UAE as the engine of Middle East aviation demand.
