India captain Gill accuses England of violating 'spirit of the game' ahead of fourth test
India captain Shubman Gill said Tuesday that England had acted against the "spirit of the game' by delaying play in last week's heated third test at Lord's.
Gill was not happy about England batsmen Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett being late to the crease on the third day of the test, which the host won by 22 runs to take a 2-1 series lead.
A flashpoint came when England's openers had to bat out the final seven minutes, but India was only able to get through one over.
"A lot of people have been talking about it, so let me just clear the air once and for all,' Gill said. "The English batsmen on that day had seven minutes of play left; they were 90 seconds late to come to the crease. Not 10, not 20 - 90 seconds late."
Gill went on to say England's actions were "not something that comes in the spirit of the game.'
There were a number of clashes between players over the next two days of the test.
England can secure a series victory with a win in the fourth test, which starts Wednesday.
England captain Ben Stokes said his team would not seek to antagonize India, but would not back down either.
"It's not something we're going to go out and purposefully look to start (an argument) because that will take our focus off what we need to do out in the middle,' he said. "But by no means, we are not going to take a backward step and let any opposition try and be confrontational towards us and not try to give a bit back.
"That goes for most teams, so it is not like we are the only team that does that.'

India captain Gill run out in sight of Gavaskar record
LONDON: India captain Shubman Gill ran himself out on Thursday's opening day of the fifth and deciding Test against England as he closed in on Sunil Gavaskar's national record for runs in a series. The tourists were 85-3 when rain stopped play for a second time at the Oval after being sent in to bat in a match India must win to square the series at 2-2. Gill, who has already scored four hundreds in a prolific debut campaign as captain, came in with India struggling on 38-2. At that stage, he needed just 53 more runs to overhaul Gavaskar's mark for the most runs scored by an India batsman in a Test series of 774 - set by the 'Little Master' against the West Indies in 1971. The 25-year-old Gill struck several elegant trademark drives and rarely looked in trouble, despite the overcast, bowler-friendly conditions that favoured England's quicks. But on 21 he pushed the ball into the offside and set off for a single that was never on, with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, following through, throwing down the stumps at the striker's end. Gill, halfway down the pitch, slipped as he tried to turn back to safety. The skipper could yet break Gavaskar's record should India have a second innings. Sai Sudharsan was 28 not out when the rain came again, with Josh Tongue and Jamie Overton — two of England's three recalled quicks along with Atkinson — too often wayward. Earlier, England took two wickets after Ollie Pope, leading the hosts in place of injured captain Ben Stokes, won the toss on his Surrey home ground. It was not long before Atkinson, a Surrey team-mate of Pope and one of four changes to the England team following last week's drawn third Test at Old Trafford, had opener Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw for two on review. Veteran seamer Chris Woakes then had opener KL Rahul, who has scored more than 500 runs the series, playing on for 14 trying to cut a ball that was too close to him. A schedule of five Tests in less than seven weeks has taken its toll, with both England and India making four changes to their teams at the Oval. India left out paceman Jasprit Bumrah, who hurt his back earlier this year. Team bosses had previously announced the world's top-ranked Test bowler would only feature in three games during the current series — a figure he reached in Manchester. – AFP

Marchand grabs gold; McIntosh continues flawless run
SINGAPORE, July 31, (AP): Léon Marchand of France clinched gold in the 200-meter individual medley at the swimming world championships, headlining a podium that carried a distinct Texas connection. Marchand, American Shaine Casas (silver), and Hungary's Hubert Kós (bronze) all train under legendary coach Bob Bowman at the University of Texas in Austin – the same coach who guided Michael Phelps to Olympic greatness. Just 24 hours after shattering the world record in the semifinals with a time of 1:52.69, Marchand nearly repeated the feat in the final, clocking 1:53.68 — still well under the previous world best of 1:54.00 set by American Ryan Lochte in 2011. 'It was a bit tough today, but it was great,' Marchand said. 'I know Shaine always goes out super fast, so I knew I couldn't be far off. It was a battle to the end, and that was cool for me.' Marchand, who won four individual Olympic titles in Paris last year, is contesting only two individual events in Singapore. He already holds the 400 IM world record (4:02.50) from the 2023 worlds and hinted at another possible record attempt in that event on Sunday, the final day of competition. 'That's still a whole new challenge,' Marchand said. 'I know I've gained a lot of power, but I'm not sure it makes a big difference over the 400. We'll see.' Canada's Summer McIntosh continued her stellar run, winning the women's 200-meter butterfly in 2:01.99 – the second-fastest time in history. She was on world-record pace through 150 meters, but faded slightly over the final stretch. The current record of 2:01.81 was set by Liu Zige of China in 2009 during the super-suit era. 'My coach and I had one goal – to break the world record,' McIntosh said, visibly disappointed. 'That's what I've been training for. I missed it by that little and messed up the last 15 meters. I didn't reach my goal today.' Still, it was McIntosh's third gold of the meet. American Regan Smith earned silver (2:04.99), followed by Australia's Elizabeth Dekkers (2:06.12). China's 12-year-old sensation Yu Zidi finished fourth (2:06.43) – her second fourth-place finish of the championships. McIntosh is set to begin training with Bowman in Texas this fall.

Félix links up with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr
MANCHESTER, England, July 30, (AP): João Félix took his total transfer cost to around $260 million Tuesday when completing his latest move - this time to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr. The Portugal forward has teamed up with compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, joining from Chelsea for a reported initial fee of 30 million euros ($34.6 million) and signing a two-year contract 'I'm here to spread joy. Let's win together,' Félix said in a video announcing his arrival, shared on Al Nassr's social media channels. He is the latest star player from Europe to move to Saudi Arabia as part of the kingdom's bid to become a major force in soccer. But his transfer from Club World Cup winner Chelsea is the latest in a long line of moves for a player who holds the record for the fourth most expensive signing in history, but has failed to live up to the expectations placed on him so early in his career. Still only 25, Félix has time to hit the heights he seemed destined for when joining Spanish giant Atletico Madrid from Benfica for $140 million in 2019. But his career has stalled since then with a series of loans to top teams including Chelsea, Barcelona and most recently AC Milan failing to see him establish himself among the very elite. According transfer date website Transfermarkt, Félix is behind only Neymar (222 million euros ($256 million)), Kylian Mbappe (180m euros ($208 million)) and Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele (both 135m euros ($155.8 million)) on the list of highest transfer fees in soccer. Al Nassr will hope Félix's arrival will see it win the title it has been waiting for since signing Ronaldo in a spectacular move late in 2022.
