Sean Payton doesn't seem to be a big fan of doing two joint practices
"This is the first time for me, and for us, where [we have] back-to-back joint practices," Payton said Tuesday. "And so, when you have a joint practice, you lose a day -- like the day prior, you gotta be smart. The day after [is a walk-through]. So it can … when you get the calendar at the start of preseason, you lay it out and you see when your games are, there's three of them. And when you add a joint practice, it's a little different the day before and the day after.
"So, when you have two of them, it can cut into maybe your installation and your normal training camp routine. So, the first time for us to do two, we'll see if we ever do it again. I'm used to really one either Week 2 or Week 3. So what was different was Week 1. And that's just one of those things you make a note of."
Payton did not directly say he wouldn't do two again, but he certainly seemed to imply it. Payton also wasn't a fan of how long the 49ers practice lasted.
"Thursday's practice was pretty long, maybe a little longer than I would've liked, and then the turnaround and then the game on Saturday," Payton said, perhaps hinting that this week's joint practice won't be as long.
After a pair of joint practices over the last week, Denver's starters might not play as much on Saturday as they did in Week 2 of preseason last summer.
'It may," Payton said when asked if the joint practices will impact how much starters play. "It may because, again, this is a first. Normally, I would go into the second quarter. I don't know that I'm going to do that based on the schedule. We'll see.'
Saturday's game will be nationally televised on NFL Network (and available on these TV channels).

Cowboys might have legitimate backup plan to one of league's most expensive positions
It might not be unfolding how most thought it would. It might not have been under the most ideal conditions, either. It's definitely not the player everyone thought it would be, but the Dallas Cowboys might have finally found their Plan B to the all-important left tackle position. Nate Thomas, the forgotten rookie from the 2024 NFL draft class, has seemingly come from nowhere and laid early claim to the backup LT spot. With Tyler Guyton possibly missing regular season action, the backup title probably means Week 1 starting offensive lineman. Finding a capable Plan B at LT isn't just about injury replacement on this Cowboysteam. Until proven otherwise it's also an alternative solution should Plan A never come to fruition. Guyton struggled mightily in his first year with the Cowboys. The 2024 first rounder from Oklahoma looked every bit as raw as scouts pegged him to be as a prospect. And while the potential and skillset is high, the performance has a long way to go before it can even be considered average. Though Guyton showed improvement early on in training camp, a fracture to his right knee robbed him of much needed practice time and development. He may pick up right where he left off or he might take a step back and take time to reach a modest level of play. Since there's no telling how well Guyton will be playing when he returns in September, having a solid option to fall back on is extremely important. When training camp kicked off late last month, everyone thought Asim Richards would be the guy providing insurance. Richards was steadily working his way up the depth chart and he was an improving player with a wealth of LT experience. But as things unfolded, it quickly became apparent the Cowboys had different things in mind for their offensive line. They saw Richards as a versatile swing option with OL6 capability in jumbo formations. They saw Thomas as the next man up at LT. Early returns have been understandably mixed. Thomas struggled against the LA Rams' all-star D-line in practices, but he posted a solid game against their rotational players in the first preseason game. It would be unrealistic to think he'd be a plug and play talent as a seventh rounder with no NFL experience to his name, so that itself constitutes a major victory. Not to mention, the preseason is far from over and there's plenty of development that can happen between now and the start of the regular season. Plan Bs are never ideal but they are often necessary. There are a number of scenarios that could involve Thomas playing a critical role for Dallas in both the short-term and long-term. Is this Calais Campbell's final season? Maybe not
Campbell spoke about his NFL future after 2025 on Thursday. Arizona Cardinals defensive Calais Campbell turns 39 on Sept. 1, and he is entering the 18th season of his career in the city where it all began in 2008. Naturally, many wonder if this will be the final go-round for Campbell. So it was that after the joint practice between the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos Thursday that he was asked point-blank, 'Is this your last year?' Campbell said, 'I mean (pausing), I will be very surprised if it's not. But I try not to think about the future; just stay present.' Campbell then repeated, 'I'll be very surprised if it's not.' Many media outlets have ran with that comment. However, that totally ignores what he said later at the end of his media session. When a reporter asked, 'With this potentially being your last year, when and why did you decide that this might be it for you?' Campbell laughed and somewhat hedged when he then said, 'I don't know. I haven't really decided that. It's just kinda like ... the nature.' He further explained, 'I felt this way ... I felt that the last year was likely the last couple years. So I will put that disclaimer out there. Like, last year at this time I felt the exact same way I feel right now. 'So, you never know. I love the game with all my heart and I feel like it would be cheating the game if I tried to look forward. I got to stay present, stay in the moment and just give it everything I can right now.' He will do that, so who knows? It is possible he will be on the field next year at this time, not many days until he turns 40. Walter Nolen injury: Rookie DL 'progressing right where he should be'
We don't know anything new about a timeline for his return, but at least he hasn't had any setbacks. Arizona Cardinals rookie defensive lineman Walter Nolen III, their first-round draft pick this year, has not practiced in training camp. He remains on the PUP list (physically unable to perform) with a calf injury he suffered while training days before camp started. The original report was that he would miss most, if not all of training camp. Head coach Jonathan Gannon was asked on Thursday ahead of the Cardinals' joint practice with the Denver Broncos about Nolen's progress and where he stands. There wasn't much information, but it wasn't bad news. Walter Nolen III injury update "He's doing well," Gannon said. "He's progressing right where he should be." More importantly, Nolen "hasn't had any setbacks." He noted how he didn't want to use the word "setback," as that caused some issue last year when 2024 first-round pick Darius Robinson was coming back from a calf injury as well. Does that clarify anything in terms of a timeline for Nolen's return? No, not at all. Only a little more than three weeks remain before the season opener. The Cardinals will have to make a decision with Nolen by August 31 with final roster cuts to 53 players. They must decide whether he will open the season on the active roster or whether to put him on the PUP reserve to start the year, meaning he would miss at least the first four games of the season. We can expect the Cardinals won't say anything other than make an announcement that Nolen either passed his physcial and was taken off PUP or that he has been placed on the regular-season PUP at the end of the month.
