TAWAU: Eighteen villages in Merotai benefited from the installation of 300 solar lights to enhance safety and the well-being of residents in the area. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) President, Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, said the installation indirectly helps ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians in areas lacking streetlight facilities. He said the implementation was carried out in stages since two years ago. 'Before this, the roads and alleys going into the villages were really dark at night, which could be dangerous for the people living there. 'Therefore, we took the initiative to install solar lights to brighten up the area and make it easier for villagers to carry out their activities at night,' he said. Liew said solar lights were cost-effective, do not require connection to the electricity supply, and can operate even during power outages. 'We will identify additional locations within the constituency that require solar lights and will consider subsequent installation phases based on needs and feedback from residents,' said Liew. The villages receiving the installation of these lights include Kuala Merotai; Kampung Iban Baharu and Lama; Sungai Udin; Kampung Langsat; Kampung Jagung; Kampung Kijang; Kampung Pengkalan Asli; Kampung Tanah Merah; Kampung Simpang Tiga; Kampung Mangaris; and Kampung Kelapa. Additionally, Kampung Melati Burut; Kampung Hulu Haji Matahir; Kampung Haji Matahir; Kampung Beruang; Kampung Sungai Imam; Kampung Seri Bombalai; and Kampung Sungai Imam Bombalai Laut are also included. 'This is an ongoing effort and a social responsibility towards the villagers in Merotai.' Liew expressed his gratitude to all parties involved, including members of Parti Harapan Rakyat, who carried out the installation through a spirit of cooperation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? LDP slams PTPTN waiver tactic as

Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has denounced the use of PTPTN loan forgiveness as an election promise, calling it a reckless tactic that misleads voters and threatens Malaysia's education financing system. LDP warned that such populist pledges erode financial discipline, risk collapsing PTPTN's revolving fund, and promote strategic default among borrowers. The party also criticised the Sabah-targeted proposal as divisive and lacking a clear fiscal model. 'Education policy must be rooted in long-term fairness and fiscal responsibility not exploited for political gain,' the party said. They stresssed that PTPTN is a federal agency and state-level promises to cancel loans overstep constitutional bounds. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? LGBT hate crimes surge 70% in Milei's Argentina: Report

Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Some 70 percent of the victims were trans women, the observatory said. - Pix for representational purposes. BUENOS AIRES: Hate crimes targeting members of Argentina's LGBT community increased 70 percent in the first half of 2025, an NGO which tracks such attacks announced Monday. Between January and June, the National Observatory of LGBT+ Hate Crimes documented 102 attacks on people because of their sexuality, gender expression or gender identity -- a 70 percent increase over the same period in 2024. Some 70 percent of the victims were trans women, the observatory said. The report's authors pointed the finger at President Javier Milei, accusing him of having whipped up anti-LGBT sentiment and depicting the community as a 'social enemy.' At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, the right-wing Milei launched a broadside against what he called the 'cancer' of 'progressive ideology,' including what he dubbed 'radical feminism' and 'gender ideology.' A month later he followed a number of countries in banning gender reassignment surgery and hormone therapy for minors. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
