Surge in RRTS rides after one-way scheme on NH58
Puneet Vats, chief public relations officer of NCRTC, told TOI, "Ridership was about 45,000 until June, but surged to nearly 69,000 after road closures for the kanwar yatra. Stations like Meerut South, Ghaziabad, and Anand Vihar see the highest number of commuters." To manage the demand, NCRTC reduced train intervals from 15 to 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, NH-58 is now one-way, and the Delhi-Meerut expressway will be closed in two phases starting July 19, with heavy vehicles already banned, to make way for the pilgrims.
Since its launch, RRTS has recorded 1.2 crore rides. However, reaching Meerut South station remains difficult due to kanwariya crowds on Delhi Road.
Anand Harit, a commuter, said, "Travelling by car is tough with road closures. RRTS is easier, but I still need three auto rides to reach the station." Notably, NH-58 has seen conflicts and accidents involving kanwariyas in the past years. As a precautionary measure, the route diversion dedicates one lane to light vehicles and the other to pilgrims.

Travel destination change after terror attack, 7% more Bengal tourists visited Goa in 2 months
Kolkata: More and more people from Kolkata are choosing Goa as their holiday destination, apparently preferring the southwestern coast over popular mountain spots in the north, following the Pahalgam attack in April. According to travel tour operators, Goa registered over 10% rise in the footfall in the past two months. From Bengal, a 6%-7% rise in the tourist count was recorded, said Dhiraj R Vagle, deputy director, Goa tourism department. "After the terror attack in Pahalgam, people from different parts of the country, including Kolkata, put off their Kashmir travel plans. In a ripple effect of the attack, the number of domestic tourists visiting Goa between May and June went up by 10%. We hope this trend will continue," Vagle told TOI. From Jan to March, before the terror attack had taken place, Goa had seen about a 10.5% year-on-year growth in tourist count, registering a footfall of 28.5 lakh visitors. "The uptick continued the next months, leading to another 10% rise in tourist count," said Vagle. About complaints against taxi drivers fleecing tourists in Goa, Vagle said, "Our govt has taken a slew of measures to keep an eye on errant taxi drivers." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Anil Punjabi, national committee member of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), said, "After the Pahalgam attack, we found a shift in people's travel plans. There was a significant rise in the number of Bengal's tourists visiting Goa. Many people, hesitant about Kashmir for the time being, redirected their plans to other destinations, like Goa." Echoing him, Debjit Dutta, state chairman of the Indian Association of Tour Operators, said, "The recent crisis in Kashmir paved the way for the change in destination choice. Many chose Goa though the coast and the mountains offer distinct experiences. People prefer hills in the summer but this year, Goa seemed to have been a fallback option for many." Though the Pahalgam attack boosted tourism in other places, like Goa, travellers were likely to return to Kashmir in puja vacation, claimed Pradip Kumar Karar, CEO and chairperson of a private tourism firm in Bengal.

Double-decker trip delights visitors to Kochi
Kochi: KSRTC's newly introduced double-decker city tour bus has been turning heads and lifting hearts as it rolls through Kochi's scenic corridors. With its signature red-and-yellow livery and a refurbished vintage Leyland frame, the open-top bus offers a refreshing cultural retreat for tourists and residents alike. However, the limited route and potential hazards from overhead cable lines and tree branches present challenges for both staff and passengers on board. When TOI took a trip on the bus, it began its journey at KSRTC south depot at 5pm. Safety instructions are announced before departure, as necessary precautions are needed due to low-hanging tree branches and cable lines. The bus travels via Thevara to Thoppumpady CoPT Avenue Walkway, where there is a 30-minute halt for passengers to enjoy the lakeside park and walkway. The bus, then proceeds via Thevara, Marine Drive, High Court, crosses three Goshree bridges and reaches Kalamukku Junction before returning to KSRTC stand around 8pm. Conductor Shalimar K Thomas, who plays the dual role of guide and entertainer, leads the journey with spirited commentary and music. The experience is both entertaining and educational as Thomas highlights landmarks like Cochin Shipyard and its role in constructing INS Vikrant, and the historic Thoppumpady Harbour Bridge, which operated like London Bridge to let vessels pass. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "I feel nostalgic. I have taken such buses in Thiruvananthapuram as well as in Mumbai; however, this was a different experience for me. The ride seemed seamless and the view clutter-free," said Leby Varghese, who works at a bank in Ernakulam. Most passengers said the ride was enjoyable with a caveat that the route could have been extended to other prominent areas of the city. Commuters also said that it is important to adhere to the regulations to avoid mishaps. "...some of the branches touched my body; people need to be careful," said a Kannur native who doesn't want to be named. On the return journey, Thomas gave the microphone to the passengers, where many showcased their talents in singing. When hesitation lingered, Thomas himself sang songs and they were soon joined by others. "I loved the experience. I sang many songs. It is the first time I am experiencing such a journey. The conductor was the star; he too sang songs with us, and I have never seen something like this," said Sreya S, a Class V student.

Vietjet Bengaluru-Ho Chi Minh City daily service on the cards
Ho Chi Minh City: Flight travel between Bengaluru and Vietnam is set for a major boost with Vietjet, Vietnam's largest private carrier, planning to expand its Bengaluru (BLR) –Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) connection to daily service. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Currently, the airline operates four flights per week between the two cities. The airline is exploring this upgrade keeping in mind the increased interest being shown by Indian tourists, especially Bengaluru's high-spending tech crowd, in various exotic and offbeat destinations of Vietnam. "The response to our Bengaluru-Ho Chi Minh City route has so far been quite encouraging, and we may upgrade our current four-times-a-week service to a daily service in the future," Kieu Duong, Vietjet's international PR officer, told TOI on the sidelines of a tour at the picturesque port city of Vung Tau in Vietnam earlier this month. Tour operators have observed that Vietnamese cities like Ho Chi Minh City combine rich cultural attractions, such as the War Remnants Museum, Saigon Opera House, Independence Palace, and bustling Bến Thành Market, with affordability in accommodation, food, and sightseeing. The direct service connects Bengaluru to SGN in just about 4 hours and 40 minutes, with flyers no longer having to go through the hassles of taking connecting flights from other cities in India or from airports in Southeast Asia. Vietjet currently operates flights to six Indian cities – Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kochi. The airline is not only looking to tap into rising passenger traffic on the India-Vietnam sector, but is also keen on offering flyers from India easy connectivity to destinations in Australia and Far Eastern and Southeast Asian cities, with Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi as transit hubs. "We're very optimistic about our India operations, and our target is to offer our guests an opportunity to enjoy a slice of Vietnam, while providing seamless connections to Australia, China and other destinations on our network," Kieu Duong added. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The airline's two-class configuration on an Airbus A321 aircraft for the BLR-SGN route includes a premium economy SkyBoss class that allows access to dedicated check-in counters, airport lounge, priority boarding, and choice of onboard food and beverages.
