But he was not at his best at the Winter Gardens and was downed 10-8 by the Dutchman van Veen, who celebrated the best win of his career.

Humphries' exit will make Luke Littler the overwhelming favourite for the event, with the teenager kicking off his campaign against Ryan Searle on Sunday.
Despite not being at his best, Humphries still had chances to beat Van Veen but could only convert 28 per cent of his double attempts.
Van Veen made his move to break at 7-7 and then eventually got over the finishing line on his fourth match dart.
'This feels like the biggest win of my career, to be here at the iconic Winter Gardens,' he said.
'Finally I got that winning double and this is the biggest win of my career.

'I guess this makes me the number one seed! I am just going to enjoy this one tonight.
'It means the world, I felt really relaxed on the stage, to beat the reigning champion and world number one, it's an amazing feeling.
'Luke is a true champion, a great guy and the true world number one. To beat the world number one is amazing but it is just one game. I take it game by game.'
James Wade celebrated 20 successive years at the World Matchplay by coasting to a 10-3 win over Joe Cullen.
Wade threw his best-ever average at the Winter Gardens of 104.44, hitting 10 out of 15 doubles.

He hit out at anyone who believes he cannot win the title next week, referencing an old spat with Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle who once questioned him.
'I can do it again, 100 per cent. I'm good enough to win this tournament. I mean, I think if anyone believes any different, I think they're a little bit Wayne Mardle-d.
'But I respect Wayne as well. I mean, Wayne's a wonderful person. He's got great knowledge of the game. I think he writes quite a few other players off.

'But I can win this tournament. Of course, again, it's no secret.'
Danny Noppert beat Cameron Menzies 10-2, setting up a second-round meeting with Van Veen.
Wessel Nijman ensured it was a perfect night for the Dutch contingent with a brilliant win over eighth seed Nathan Aspinall.
Nijman, on debut at the Winter Gardens, downed the 2023 champion in style with a 10-6 victory.

Whilst the competitors have battled numerous times previously, their shared respect was evident to witness. Following the race, Hamilton chose to approach Verstappen, with the Brit walking over to the media pen to tap his shoulder before they had a quick conversation. When questioned about his view on their incident, Hamilton told Sky Sports F1: "For me, it was a racing incident. He was much quicker. I turned but left enough space. He locked up and there was contact. If he was under control, he would have been passed." The stewards ruled it a racing incident with neither driver at fault. The contact left Verstappen lamenting a lost podium opportunity as he tumbled to fifth following the clash, whilst Hamilton secured third spot to become the first driver to reach 200 career podiums. Ferrari's lacklustre campaign this season has attracted significant criticism, with Charles Leclerc and Hamilton languishing fifth and sixth respectively in the Drivers' Championship standings, heaping pressure on team boss Frederic Vasseur. Nevertheless, the Frenchman has now been handed a multi-year contract extension ahead of Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix. The Italian outfit issued a statement on Thursday declaring: "Ferrari announced today that Ferrari S.p.A. has extended, with a multiple-year contract, its agreement with Fred Vasseur, who will continue as team principal of Scuderia Ferrari HP for the coming Formula 1 seasons. "Renewing Fred's contract reflects our determination to build on the foundations laid so far. His ability to lead under pressure, embrace innovation, and pursue performance aligns fully with Ferrari's values and long-term ambitions. "Under Fred's leadership, Scuderia Ferrari HP is united, focused, and committed to continuous improvement. The trust placed in him reflects the team's confidence in its strategic direction and reinforces a shared determination to deliver the results that Ferrari's fans, drivers, and team members expect and deserve." Vasseur has received public backing from Hamilton and Leclerc recently and Martin Brundle seconded their opinion as last month he said: "It would be nuts to change Fred Vasseur. Is he the problem? I don't think he's the problem at the moment. The car's not fast enough. Now, that's a collaboration between everybody in the team. "Who would you replace them with? And then a new crew comes in, and everybody keeps their head down, start working in silos, waiting to see where they stand with the new boss. That's the last thing Ferrari need to do at the moment."

Luke Littler has opened up about how he copes with his exhaustive darts schedule as he basks in the glory of becoming World Matchplay champion for the first time Luke Littler has admitted that juggling his intense schedule has been one of the toughest aspects of his meteoric rise in darts. The Nuke has added another big prize to his burgeoning collection by winning the World Matchplay for the first time. Littler beat James Wade 18-13 in the final to complete darts' Triple Crown, which also includes the World Championship and the Premier League. The 18-year-old has also won the Grand Slam of Darts and the UK Open since bursting onto the scene as a 16-year-old at the 2023/24 World Championship. Littler has already completed two Premier League campaigns - winning one and reaching the final in the other - which puts huge demands on the players involved, as nights often precede European Tour events. To ease his workload, the teenager skips the occasional tournament. 'I pull out of tournaments to give me two free days off because it can be tough, especially when the Premier League's on,' he exclusively told Mirror Sport. 'You don't get many days off from February up until May. It's just about managing the schedule and not overdoing it. At the start of the year, me and my manager put everything in the calendar so we know what's coming. 'So if I'm worn out or tired from a Euro Tour - you come back on a Sunday, then there's Pro Tours on Monday, Tuesday - you're not going to do them. It's all about managing the schedule, focusing on yourself and not tiring yourself out.' Littler's schedule, including media and PR commitments, means he has little time to reflect on his achievements of the last 18 months. Next week, for instance, he flies Down Under for World Series events in Australia and New Zealand. He said: 'There's not enough time to sit back and look at what I've done. When I've got a week off, I don't want to be sat down analysing what I've done in the past. I know what I've done, I can see the trophies in my living room. It's about living in the moment.' Following the World Series, which culminates in September, Littler and his rivals will turn their attention to the run of majors leading into the expanded World Championship, which begins on December 11. Of the majors, Littler is looking to win the World Grand Prix, European Championship, and Players Championships Finals for the first time. He said: 'Everyone wants to win the majors before the Worlds. I want to go back-to-back in the Grand Slam and do well at the Grand Prix.'
