Scams totaling over $1M affecting residents in Morgan Co.
MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Multiple residents in Morgan County are being scammed out of a ton of money totaling over $1M.
According to MCSO, last week a resident reported losing $813,000 to a scammer posing as law enforcement and claiming they had Federal Warrants and Charges.
This particular resident made payments totaling $813,000 from January to May.
This week, another resident reported losing $15,000 to a scammer posing as law enforcement and claiming they had Warrants and Charges as well.
'These are scams. Every time. Do not give money to anyone claiming to be Law Enforcement over the phone….ever….PLEASE,' said the Morgan County Sheriff's Office.
MCSO told News 19 that a third resident was contacted by his 'bank' stating that they had received a tip about a $200,000 scam in the area and that his account had been compromised on the 'dark web'.
Authorities said that the resident was directed to withdraw money from his bank and deposit it in a bitcoin machine in Huntsville 'for safe keeping until the scam is resolved'.
In all, this resident lost $200,000.
The Morgan County Sheriff's Office is providing some tips to residents on how to spot scams.

The teens went on a Memorial Day weekend camping trip at the Tonto National Forest and did not return, according to KSAZ. Friends of the pair have since set up a memorial overlooking Camelback Mountain, where the two would often watch the sunset with friends, KSAZ reported. Kylie Whattim, a coworker of one of the victims, called the news "shocking," while Clark's coworker Iara Rosales said the teen's life was "cut very short." "And so was Pandora's," she told KSAZ. "They were very young, and it was just so sudden and a tragedy that you wouldn't even imagine." GoFundMe campaigns have since been established for the families of both Kjolsrud and Clark. Man accused of attacking 2 with knife in Berea
BEREA, Ky. (FOX 56) — Deputies in Madison County worked with Kentucky State Police troopers to find a man accused of attacking two people with a knife on Saturday. The Madison County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) posted on Facebook that after being dispatched to Owsley Fork Road in response to reports of a stabbing, deputies found a man and woman who had suffered cuts 'consistent with a knife attack.' Law enforcement identified the suspect as 34-year-old James Cochran, who was arrested and lodged in the Madison County Detention Center, according to a Facebook post by the MCSO around 9 a.m. on Sunday. According to the sheriff's office, Cochran was charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault.
