Sony WH-1000XM6 launch in Ireland: can the best ANC headphones get even better?

Tech giant Sony has unveiled its eagerly anticipated WH-1000XM6 active noise cancelling (ANC) headphones which the firm unsurprisingly says are its most advanced to date.
Sony was the market leader in noise cancelling headphones for many years, with Bose coming a close second place. But on the third and fourth generation of the WH-1000 headphones, Sony added an abundance of clever features and improved the audio and noise cancellation quality to the point that they moved way ahead of the pack.
The fifth iteration WH-1000XM5 received some criticism over their non-folding design - it was a mis-step by Sony in a now crowded marketplace in which it faced stiff competition from new challengers such as Sennheiser (with 60-hour battery life and better sound quality), Apple (with AirPods Max which seamless integrated with the rest of its ecosystem) and Bose (whose QuietComfort Ultra are the current noise cancellation kings).
Fans of Sony's cans had expected the WH-1000XM6 to launch in 2024, so there has been heightened interest in this May 2025 arrival. The first bit of great news is that the new cans bring back the much-loved folding design and the second is the price is only €30 more expensive than the launch price of the WH-1000XM5.
Here's everything you need to know about 2025's most exciting new over-ear ANC headphones…
Building on the legacy of Sony's famed 1000X series, this latest upgrade WH-1000XM6 combines premium sound with the best noise cancelling in a refreshed design to create what the company said is an unparalleled audio solution for music lovers, fashionistas, travellers and business professionals.
The new WH-1000XM6 bring back a folding mechanism, one that is crafted using advance metal injection for what the company calls a seamless and durable fold designed to slip seamlessly into bags and airplane pockets. The case now features a magnetic closure while the headband on the cans is infused with vegan leather for what should be a more comfy fit.
Sony WH-1000XM6 are powered by an advanced processor and adaptive microphone system. The company said processor speeds seven times faster than the predecessor mean the active noise cancellation is optimised in real-time. The new chip fine-tunes one dozen microphones and Sony said this results in a dramatic leap in both noise cancelling and sound quality.
The precise detection of the twelve optimally placed microphones allow the noise cancellation to adapt more precisely to fit you and your environment.
A new Adaptive NC Optimiser further boosts the unmatched noise cancelling precision, adjusting instantly to any form of external noise and air pressure. And the firm said its Auto Ambient Sound mode is even better at adapting to your surroundings in real-time, balancing your audio content with any external sound.
Audio quality has been refined on the new cans. The WH-1000XM6 headphones were developed in collaboration with world-renowned mastering engineers at three of the industry's leading recording studios, Sterling Sound, Battery Studios and Coast Mastering. And Grammy nominated artist Post Malone has partnered with Sony for its marketing campaign.
Sony WH-1000XM6 support both High-Resolution Audio and High-Resolution Audio Wireless, and utilise LDAC, Sony's industry-adopted audio codec. In addition, using Edge-AI, the firm's DSEE Extreme tech upscales compressed digital music files in real time to restore high range sound lost in compression.
The new headphones work with Sony's Sound Connect app which features an array of helpful features including a 10-band EQ. While Game EQ, developed with Sony's expertise from its Inzone range to enhance sound quality for FPS gaming. The WH-1000XM6 also feature a new 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema that brings spatial sound experience just like you are in a cinema from stereo sound by employing the company's unique upmix and 360 Spatial Sound technology.
Sony also promises much improved call quality on the new headphones.
Sony WH-1000XM6 are available in black, platinum silver and midnight blue with a suggested retail price of €450. You can buy them from Sony, Harvey Norman, Currys and Amazon.

PS6 release date ‘sooner' than we thought as major game cancellation exposes ‘exact launch year' for next-gen console

SONY'S PlayStation 6 may be out sooner than we thought, a new leak suggests. The next-gen console built to replace the PS5 and 4 Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro is the company's latest console – but another one is secretly in the works Credit: Sony PlayStation Court documents from Microsoft, which owns Xbox, previously revealed that the tech giant was expecting a 2028 launch for next-gen consoles. That included its own top-secret Xbox successor as well as Sony's unnamed next-gen PlayStation. TIME TO PLAY? But countering that is a new report from The report notes that the game was due to land on next-gen consoles that are yet to be released. Read more on PlayStation This unannounced game was reportedly due to be called Blade Runner: Time To Leave. It was allegedly in development at Supermassive Games, with a 12-hour single-player story planned. The report notes that the game entered pre-production in September 2024 with a budget of around £33 million / $45 million. But the game has supposedly been canned by the Guildford, UK-based studio. Supermassive Games is owned by Nordisk Film , which is a Sony partner that has exclusive distribution rights to PlayStation products in Nordic countries. Get an inside look at the new PS5 30th anniversary edition Titles from the studio include Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry, and The Casting of Frank Stone. The Sun has asked Supermassive Games for comment and will update this story with any response. WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE PS6 LAUNCH WINDOW? Sony hasn't explicitly confirmed a launch timeline for the PS6. But the company has released plenty of consoles in the past, giving us some useful info to work with. 4 A new PlayStation 6 could be just two-and-a-half years away Credit: Sony PlayStation Just last year, we asked AI to predict the PS6 release date, based on Sony's PlayStation release history . And it came up with Thursday, November 11, 2027 – fitting in with this latest leak. Here's a list of PlayStation – Saturday, December 3, 1994 (1st Saturday) PS One – Friday, July 7, 2000 (1st Friday) PlayStation 2 – Saturday, March 4, 2000 (1st Saturday) PS2 Slimline – Friday, October 29, 2004 (5th Friday) PlayStation 3 – Saturday, November 11, 2006 (2nd Saturday) PS3 Slim – Thursday, August 27, 2009 (4th Thursday) PS3 Super Slim – Tuesday, September 25, 2012 (4th Tuesday) PlayStation 4 – Friday, November 15, 2013 (3rd Friday) PS4 Slim – Thursday, September 15, 2016 (3rd Thursday) PS4 Pro – Thursday, November 10, 2016 (2nd Thursday) PlayStation 5 – Thursday, November 12, 2020 (2nd Thursday) PS5 Slim – Friday, November 10, 2023 (2nd Friday) PS5 Pro – Thursday, November 7, 2024 (1st Thursday) There's usually a six-to-seven-year gap between the major console releases. Just look at this list: 1994 – PlayStation 2000 – PlayStation 2 2006 – PlayStation 3 2013 – PlayStation 4 2020 – PlayStation 5 And the final two (and therefore most recent) consoles came out seven years after their predecessors. 4 The latest major console release from Sony was 2020's PlayStation 5 – everything since has been a spin-off Credit: Sony PlayStation That would suggest that Sony would work towards a 2027 launch. November is usually favoured by Sony for PlayStation launches, especially in recent years. That means the console is out just in time for Christmas and the Black Friday spending season. And Sony clearly tends towards Thursday and Friday launches, usually in the second or third week of the month. Sony PlayStation through the ages Here's a quick history of the main models released... "Releasing on a Thursday allows for a full weekend of sales and media coverage, maximizing initial impact and momentum. Sennheiser HD 550 open-back headphones: Pure audio for music, movies and games

The Sennheiser HD 550 are open-back headphones designed for listeners who prefer wired audio and value sound quality above features like active noise cancellation or virtual surround sound. They cater to purists seeking a more natural, spacious listening experience without the distractions of digital enhancements. Design Like the HD 505 I reviewed recently, the Sennheiser HD 550 comes in a plain brown box. All you get in the box is a detachable 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable and a screw-on 6.3mm adapter—useful if you plug it into an amp or audio interface. Visually, the design aligns with Sennheiser's HD 500 series — simple, functional, and purpose-built rather than showy. The large oval earcups are wrapped in soft velour padding and connect to the headband through a pivoting mechanism for a flexible fit. The headband itself is made of plastic with medium padding. The HD 550's light 237g weight helps reduce pressure on the top of your head, although I did find the clamping force to be a little strong, which, to be fair, is preferable to it feeling too loose. Build-wise, while the plastic shell won't win any luxury design awards, it feels solid and durable. The open-back design is immediately evident thanks to the visible grilles covering the drivers — a signature touch for Sennheiser's open-back headphones. Comfort The HD 550 is comfortable. The earcups are roomy, and the weight distribution is well-balanced, meaning I could wear them for hours without ear fatigue. A surprising bonus is that the HD 550 works quite well with glasses. The velour ear pads are soft enough to accommodate the arms of my specs without creating hotspots or excessive pressure. Features and practical use What really stands out in the HD 550 is its custom 38mm driver, made at Sennheiser's audiophile factory in Ireland. When I started listening, I noticed how clearly and detailed everything sounded — even at low or high frequencies. Its 150-ohm impedance worked great with all my hi-fi gear without needing a separate amp – it worked surprisingly well using Apple's DAC dongle. The HD 550 has an impedance of 150 ohms and a sensitivity of 106.7 dB (1 Vrms), meaning it's relatively easy to drive—no powerful amp is required, though decent audio hardware will still get the best results. The detachable cable is a practical inclusion. It connects via 2.5mm at the headphone end and terminates in a standard 3.5mm jack, with a screw-on 6.3mm adapter. I always appreciate when manufacturers use detachable cables for convenience and longevity. Sound performance Subjectively, the HD 550 stands out for its clean, balanced sound signature and impressively wide soundstage. These headphones are tuned for naturalism — no excessive bass, no sharp treble, just clear and authentic audio reproduction. This will definitely appeal to audio purists, though those who prefer a more bass-heavy or treble-boosted sound might find them a little less colourful or exciting. The bass is tight and well-extended without being overpowering. It doesn't have the thump of some closed-back models, but it's articulate and controlled. It remained refined in bass-heavy tracks and didn't muddy the mix. The midrange was particularly appealing for the type of music I enjoy. Vocals come through with excellent presence and clarity. Everything sounded rich, warm, and lifelike, whether it was acoustic guitar or layered vocal harmonies. This midrange quality alone significantly enhances the listening experience, especially for vocal-driven or instrumental music fans. The treble is smooth and non-fatiguing, striking a nice balance between detail and comfort. There's enough clarity to pick up subtle nuances in recordings, like the shimmer of a cymbal or the breath of a vocalist, without any harshness or overly bright tones. Overall, I found it to have neutral yet lively tuning, which makes the HD 550 a pleasure to use across various musical genres. Gaming and spatial awareness The HD 550 delivers excellent spatial awareness because it is open-back. During my tests, the soundstage felt expansive, with a clear sense of direction and distance. Footsteps, gunshots, and ambient cues were precisely located. What impressed me most was how immersive the experience felt. Everyday Listening and Noise Isolation The HD 550 continues to deliver when it comes to everyday use. Music listening is dynamic and engaging, and films feel more cinematic thanks to the expansive soundstage and crisp dialogue reproduction. However, as with all open-back headphones, there's a trade-off: they don't block out ambient noise. You'll likely need to look elsewhere if you're in a noisy environment or want to use them on public transport. But they're a joy to use in a quiet home or studio setting. Verdict The Sennheiser HD 550 is an excellent pair of open-back headphones that offers a natural, immersive audio experience. It excels in midrange detail and spatial accuracy, making it ideal for music lovers and a compelling choice for gamers seeking an edge in directional sound. If you're looking for a pair of open-back headphones with balanced, accurate sound and great versatility across music, movies, and gaming, the HD 550 is well worth considering. €300 Sennheiser
