2025 MLB Draft: Georgia high school, college players selected on Day 1
Five players from Georgia high schools and colleges heard their names called on Day 1.

Daniel Pierce, a shortstop from Mill Creek High School, was the first local player off the board. The Tampa Bay Rays selected the shortstop with the No. 14 overall pick in the first round.
Another Georgia high school shortstop went 25 picks later. The New York Yankees selected Dax Kilby from Newnan High School at No. 39. Dax Kilby is a former WSB-TV Georgia Lottery Scholar Athlete.
JT Quinn was the first Georgia Bulldog off the draft board. The Baltimore Orioles took the right-handed pitcher with the No. 69 overall pick during the competitive balance draft round.

Six picks later, the Chicago White Sox selected Georgia Tech shortstop Kyle Lodise with the No. 76 pick overall. Baseball runs in his family: the Atlanta Braves drafted Lodise's cousin and Florida State shortstop Alex Lodise in the second round.
UGA junior Brian Curley rounded out Day 1 of the MLB Draft. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected the right-handed pitcher with the No. 92 overall pick.
The MLB Draft will pick back up Monday with Rounds 4-20.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled left-handed pitcher Evan Sisk and right-hander Colin Holderman from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday before their series opener against the Cubs in Chicago. In a corresponding move, the Pirates designated lefty Ryan Borucki for assignment. Right-hander Cam Sanders had been optioned to Indianapolis on Wednesday following a 12-5 loss at Milwaukee that extended the last-place Pirates' slide to five games. Sisk, a 28-year-old rookie reliever, was acquired from Kansas City at the trade deadline in a deal that sent starter Bailey Falter to the Royals. Sisk appeared in five games with Kansas City in two stints, in April and May, with no decisions in 5 1/3 innings and a 1.69 ERA. The 29-year-old Holderman last pitched for the Pirates on May 19, and was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 14 relief appearances before being sent to the minors. Over four major league seasons with the Mets and Pirates, Holderman is 8-10 with a 4.12 ERA. Borucki is 15-12 with 4.36 ERA over eight seasons with Toronto, Seattle and Pittsburgh. He was 1-3 with 5.28 ERA in 35 games and 30 2/3 innings with the Pirates this season. Borucki allowed three runs in one inning to the surging Brewers in his final appearance, on Tuesday when Milwaukee routed the Pirates 14-0. ___ AP MLB:

He has been, I would say, over the last month, he's been Freddie Freeman, totally doing great. And over the last month, he has been very disappointing. That is also true about Teoscar Hernandez, who they brought back on a three-year deal over the winter. He has been bad. Those are the two guys you expect to be contributors that have been blocked. But then there's the next level down, right, dudes are hitting .6789, let's say, Tommy Edmond, bad and hurt. Hassan Kim, bad and hurt. We're giving a ton of at bats to Estuary Ruiz and Michael Conforto, and now Alex Call since the deadline. Conforto, we have to just acknowledge this because he's the one that is getting the most flack because he signed a big contract and people know his name. I was in. I thought he was going to be great. I really did. I was totally sold. This was probably one of my biggest whiffs of the season. He's been atrocious, and truly, I know that they've now brought in Call, trying to make it more of a platoon situation. But no matter how they've shook it out, Conforto, that's the guy. I mean, these other small guys you've mentioned, I mean, sure, they're playing more now, but Conforto's up to you know, almost 400 plate appearances. At a .627 OPS. So that's been the real consistent weak spot that has not changed. Close
