Chhattisgarh targets maoist-hit areas with incentives for schools, mini-malls under new industrial push

government has rolled out an amended industrial development policy aimed at rebooting rural and semi-urban growth in areas long disrupted by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE).
Under the revised policy, CBSE-affiliated private schools with capacity for over 500 students (classes 1 to 12), along with mini malls housing multiplexes, have been included in the State's thrust sector - opening them to targeted incentives.
"Once the security vacuum is filled by the presence of state and central forces, the focus is on restoring normalcy through education and amenities," said a senior official. "Many private schools had shut down earlier because teachers wouldn't report to duty due to Maoist threats."

The initiative, part of the broader industrial policy, does not carry a separate budget line but is backed by the State's ₹1.65 lakh crore allocation for 2025-26. Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the move would address long-standing infrastructure deficits. "This isn't just an economic plan. It's about empowering youth, improving life in small towns and ensuring inclusive development," Sai told ET.
Officials said the first three private schools in underserved areas would be eligible for special incentives. Meanwhile, the mini-mall scheme will target towns and rural blocks within a 10 km radius of development centres, nudging private investors to bet on tier-3 and tier-4 towns instead of the bigger cities like Raipur or Bilaspur.
The policy realignment comes as the Centre pushes to end LWE by March 2026. Chhattisgarh remains the most affected state - with 200 Naxals killed in encounters this year alone, 183 of them in the Bastar division. Last week, Maoist general secretary Nambala Keshavrao alias Basavaraju - carrying a ₹1.5 crore bounty - was eliminated in an encounter in the Narayanpur-Bijapur region.

‘Reflection of inclusive governance': Delhi CM on Transgender Welfare and Empowerment Board
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday announced the formation of Transgender Welfare and Empowerment Board, which will be responsible for addressing the grievances of the community, and will also draw up schemes and policies for the welfare of transgenders. ' With the latest government move, transgenders will be able to self-declare their gender identity and obtain identity documents from the District Magistrate. The CM said that the board will also ensure the timely issuance of identity certificates and ID cards. Besides, the BJP government is also planning new initiatives for the community, which will include the construction of third-gender toilets in government buildings, dedicated hospital wards, and gender-specific health services in government hospitals, officials said. The government also plans to conduct sensitisation and awareness campaigns in educational institutions and workplaces and set up temporary shelters, employment training, and social security schemes tailored for the community. 'We are committed to building a Delhi that stands as a model of equality, respect, and inclusion. This decision reaffirms the values of equality and justice enshrined in the Indian Constitution and marks a revolutionary step toward mainstreaming the transgender community,' the CM said. 'Purple City' Meanwhile, Gupta also met Dr Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat. Officials said that the objective of this meeting was to hold a detailed discussion on improving accessibility in sports, education, and public services for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the Capital. The CM said that under the 'Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan', all government buildings and sports stadiums in the city will be made disabled-friendly. She also said the government is planning to extend the campaign at the city level and transform Delhi into India's first 'Purple City', a model of urban accessibility and inclusion. The campaign is structured around the 'Sarkar, Samaj, Bazaar (government, society, marketplace)' framework. Infrastructure will be aligned with national accessibility standards in collaboration with government agencies; inclusion will be promoted at the grassroots level by engaging all 21 categories of disabilities, senior citizens, and the local community; and cost-effective, sustainable solutions will be developed in collaboration with vendors, innovators, and CSR partners, the CM said. Gupta also said that there also plans to organise 'Purple Fest' as part of the Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan. The CM has directed the officials concerned to draft a detailed plan for the event. 'Through this fest, the government aims to promote a positive outlook and greater sensitivity in society toward the capabilities, talents, and rights of persons with disabilities…,' the CM said.

Tension at Durgadi Fort as rival Shiv Sena factions clash during Id-ul-Azha prayers
Tensions escalated in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday (June 7, 2025) after members of both the Eknath Shinde-led and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led factions of the Shiv Sena attempted to reach Durgadi Fort while Id-ul-Azha prayers were being offered at its foothill. According to police officials, protestors from both factions tried to ascend to the Durga temple atop the hill during the course of the Id-ul-Azha prayers being held at the base, resulting in chaos in the area. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were in effect, and several protestors were subsequently detained for violating the restrictions. Leaders from both sides, including Shinde faction functionary Ravi Patil and Uddhav faction leader Vijay Salvi, led rallies demanding that 'Durgadi Fort should be freed'. Their convoys converged at Shivaji Chowk, near the Durgadi temple, where slogans were raised by supporters of both groups. 'Police took measures to prevent protestors from both factions from reaching the fort. The protestors attempted to breach the barricades, triggering scuffles and a standoff with the police. We detained several members in preventive custody so that it does not escalate,' Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende said. Durgadi Fort has long been at the centre of a communal dispute regarding the control of a mosque located within its premises. Access to the Durga temple is typically restricted during Id-ul-Azha to facilitate prayers at the foothill. Members of the Shiv Sena have criticised the arrangement, alleging discrimination against Hindu devotees and calling for equal access to the site. The Idgah located at the fort has been under litigation since 1976, when the Majlish-e-Mushavreen Majjid Trust filed a suit seeking control. In 2024, the court ruled in favour of the State government.

"Visit very good, Germany condemned terrorism": Ravi Shankar Prasad
Berlin [Germany], June 7 (ANI): BJP MP and all-party delegation leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday described the visit to Germany to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism highly successful, noting that Germany has condemned terrorism as well as expressed solidarity with India. Following an interaction at a community event in Berlin, Prasad highlighted the enthusiasm of the Indian diaspora inspired by India's growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and emphasised that the delegation's concerns were heard across six countries, with their mission to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism gaining traction. 'There is a lot of enthusiasm among Indians in Berlin. They are very inspired by India's growth story and the action taken by the country against terrorists under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Our visit to Germany has been very good. Germany has also condemned terrorism. We are very satisfied with the visit. We were given a lot of respect in the six countries we visited, and our concerns were heard, and our stance has been made clear,' Prasad added. Former Union Minister and part of Prasad's delegation, MJ Akbar, underscored PM Modi's leadership in the global fight against terrorism, particularly along religious pretexts. He further expressed optimism about the mission's success, suggesting a positive outlook for India-Germany bilateral ties. 'We hope we have played some part in ensuring that the mission that Prime Minister Modi sent us on has been successful. We have conveyed the message that PM Modi will lead the global fight against barbaric terrorism in the name of religion, and that has risen. The reception in Germany has been the most sympathetic. This also speaks well of the future of our bilateral relations,' he added. BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, who is also part of Prasad's delegation, echoed her sentiment, highlighting the delegation's call for close monitoring of IMF funds availed by Pakistan and emphasising the unified global solidarity with India's position. 'We are very happy because we started with a friendly nation, France, and are ending with a friendly nation, Germany. The diaspora has shown a lot of enthusiasm...
