American tourist in the UK reveals he was lured into Angus Steakhouse after being fooled by viral prank
An American tourist revealed how he fell for a cheeky British prank which aims to keep foreign visitors away from London 's best restaurants.
Liam Nelson, from New York, said he'd had the 'worst steak of my life' from Angus Steakhouse in Leicester Square, after he noticed the venue had a slew of 5-star reviews online.
However what the US tourist didn't know was Brits have been 'love bombing' chain restaurants with positive and often exaggerated reviews to entice visitors to their doors.
The aim is to lure foreign visitors away from the top restaurants in central London so they are not overcrowded.
Stand up comedian Liam, who is in London to perform at Top Secret Comedy Club, luckily found the funny side of the prank and took to his TikTok @liamnelsoncomedy to tell the tale.
In a clip, which racked up over 127,000 views, he claimed Reddit tricked him into visiting the restaurant for a steak dinner.
He revealed he was looking for some 'hidden gems' when it came to restaurants instead of the usual tourist hotspots you would find in central London.
The comedian explained: 'I went on Reddit, every single response was Angus Steakhouse in Leicester Square.
'I thought maybe this is a little hole in the wall area next to all these shops, like a secret hidden gem.
'I look up the steakhouse and I see it's a chain and that is kind of compromising on one of the principles I was looking for, but tonight I was looking for an incredible steak.
'I have never seen Reddit all agree on a restaurant before, I have never seen this many people all say the same thing and they all had these glowing reviews and I read them and some voice in the back of my head was saying 'this is wrong, this is not normal' and I ignored it.
'I walked into a place with a giant neon sign and continued to order a steak.'
Liam claimed the venue was 'loud and chaotic' but he felt assured the steak would be great after reading the reviews.
'All the pictures on the wall look really yummy, the prices are decent for a steak in this area, probably about as cheap as you will get for a steak.'
He revealed that an 'unfortunate truth was revealed' when he continued to look up the reviews as he waiting for his meal.
He added: 'I found an article about how London Reddit has tried to send tourists to Angus Steakhouse to preserve the good steakhouses for themselves, genius.
'I thought I was immune to online scams but they got me... at this point my order had already been placed, the steak arrives and it's grey.
'It was bad, I tried the creamed spinach, worse than frozen somehow. London Reddit that is one for you, zero for me.'
Many rushed to the comments with some doubling down on the claim that the steakhouse is indeed the most popular, while others suggested different restaurants.
One person said: 'He's lying Angus steakhouse is the best you're going to get in London. Really a must visit.'
Another simply said: 'So proud of us.'
Someone else wrote: 'Blacklock is the beast steak + meat place I've been to more frequently in London it's SO good.
A fourth said: 'Go flat Iron, it's in Covent Garden, affordable decent steak.'
It comes after loyalists and influencers have infiltrated the web, taking to X, Reddit, and even Trip Advisor to write what appear to be grossly exaggerated reviews.
'They have THE BEST steak sandwiches!' said one person on Reddit.
Many rushed to the comments with some doubling down on the claim that the steakhouse is indeed the most popular, while others suggested different restaurants
Responding to this comment, someone else added: 'And Taylor Swift... New menu item just dropped! The Swiftloin steak sandwich'.
Also seemingly in jest, one user said: 'I've been a vegetarian for over 15 years, but not even I can resist Angus Steakhouse's steak sandwiches.'
'I was on hunger strike once. Survived for 56 days, it was the steak sandwich that broke my resistance. I am now a nutritionist and I always recommend the Carnivore diet, centred around this hallowed Stakehouse,' wrote another.
'Angus Steakhouse is on my wish list for the last meal I ever have. Absolutely phenomenal place. I just hope the tourists don't find out about it,' said one more.
A look at some of the 5000 odd Angus Steakhouse reviews on Trip Advisor paints a similar picture.
Alleged tasters of the chargrilled menu took to the website to boast of the 'very good' menu.
'It was very good and the staff is very friendly, I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good steak.' said one.
Someone else wrote: 'Very, Very good. Food and service Excellent. The prices were very competitive and not outlandish. Thank you for the experience'.
'On point!!' began another. 'American filet with green beans and salad. Cooked perfectly and service was excellent. Perfect location to the W hotel. Minutes away. Or going to see a play'.
Of course these reviews could be true, but some people don't think so.
Over on X, one user went a step further and offered directions to a branch of the famous Steakhouse: 'The one by Victoria station go to that one' they wrote.
And while others were quick to catch on to the ploy, others stated they had noticed something amiss but couldn't quite put their figure on it.
'I was wondering what was going on,' said one woman, who seemingly came across the many 5 star reviews of the Steakhouse.
Someone else wrote: 'Stop snitching', while one added: 'This seems cruel to be honest'.
However Eater correspondent Jaya Saxena told Thrillist that the strategy is not fool proof and isn't guaranteed to work.
'I think the biggest obstacle would be that sites like Yelp and Google have moderators that look out for review bombs, both positive and negative. So if suddenly a restaurant were getting hundreds of good reviews at once, that might trigger suspicion' said Jaya.
'On Reddit it might, since responses to any thread asking about steakhouses might look like legit answers. But also, presumably since this is already circulating social media and you're writing about it, I imagine anyone looking at Angus might see this information and second guess the reviews'.

‘People don't know this' – Michael Owen breaks silence on ‘well done he's 13' meme 26 years on from humiliating teenager
IT IS probably the cringiest moment from Michael Owen's long list. But now he has broken his silence on the infamous "well done, he's 13" gag from Neville Southall. 6 6 Owen featured in a Michael Owen Soccer Skills video in 1999 where he faced a young goalkeeper at an empty Stoke City stadium. The former England striker did his best to humiliate the 13-year-old Jamie Hutchinson, who was given goalkeeping tips from Southall. To his credit, Hutchinson did make some saves. But the video is remembered for Owen chipping, rounding and firing past the helpless child between the sticks - before shamelessly celebrating each finish. The laughing ex-Liverpool man clenched his fists, ran away with his arms aloft, mocked the goalkeeper for nutmegging him and pointed to his name on the back of his shirt. But it was his embarrassing shout of "get in there - game, set and match, Owen" that triggered Southall's brilliant quip. Southall said: "Well done, he's 13," a comment which remains a viral sensation and etched into British football heritage. But now, 26 years on, Owen has opened up on the clip - and revealed not all was quite as it seemed because he was told to play up for the cameras. He told talkSPORT: "I was only a couple of years older than him myself!. It's probably funny now. 'I got back from the World Cup in 98 and there were loads of commercial opportunities, things like that. Virgil van Dijk 'destroys' Michael Owen with brutal 13-word put-down on live TV after Liverpool beat Everton 'I was asked to do a soccer skills video and a soccer skills book. So I had to explain, talk through finishing, volleying, heading, whatever the skill was. Inevitably, you need a goalkeeper there. 'I never picked them and so I turned up to do the show and to talk through how I see scoring a goal and what I think in certain scenarios and whatever. 'There was a kid in goal that I had to score past and when I scored they're like, 'Come on, no, you need to show a bit more animation. Like celebrate when you score, this is going on a video.'" talkSPORT host Andy Goldstein clarified: "So people don't know this, right?" And Owen continued: "People just laugh at you no matter what. Then they take a little extract of anything. 'There's loads of things like that on the internet on me.' 'NOT EXACTLY IDEAL' Hutchinson spoke about the viral video in 2016 and admitted he knew it would not come out too well for him. He said: 'Being the goalkeeper on a programme headlined by a striker wasn't exactly ideal for me. 'It was made clear that it wouldn't make good filming if the goalkeeper was saving all the shots taken by the other kids after they had been coached by Michael.' And even Southall himself did defend Owen's actions earlier this year. The 92-cap Wales goalkeeper - who reunited with Hutchinson a few years ago - added: "I think he was being ironic to be fair, but I think he was enjoying himself and being ironic. 'But the poor kid, he scored a squillion goals past him and I was thinking 'give him a break'. 'On the day, Michael was okay and he's always okay. 'People judge him on that and that's not him." 6 6 6

There's no better way of spending a family evening than Gifford's Circus
Celebrating its 25th anniversary yet seeming to have been a fixture in the circus landscape for aeons, the old-world charm of the Cotswolds-based Giffords Circus offers an antidote to everything that's miserable about the UK at the moment. The sight of Giffords' big-top, with attendant gypsy caravans – as if spirited from the pages of Dickens but serving lots of good grub and drink too – is itself enchanting. And the bucolic vision of its late founder Nell Gifford of like-minded artists pitching up on village greens is honoured by the picturesque stop-offs. But the visual delight is maximised by the 1950s America-themed show itself, which, with Cal McCrystal directing, has the aura of a fully-fledged theatre production. Projected imagery of rippling water bathes the ring-floor to help conjure a dreamlike resort inspired by Atlantic City. There's neon signage for Sal's Motel, a soda bar booth, palm trees, and a bandstand. The retro music, performed live, emits a sunshine blast of nostalgia. An opening bout of beach-ball, for instance, is conducted to the happy-clappy sound of doo-wop hit Lollipop, a grinning acrobatic troupe from Ethiopia casually juggling clubs and stepping in time to the tunes. This isn't one for those craving a lot of spectacular death-defying daring – no one is flying from a trapeze, being shot from a cannon or whizzing at speed on motorbikes. Much entertainment is provided by irrepressible resident buffoon Tweedy. Cast as the motel bellboy, he kicks things off with inspired ineptitude involving a deck-chair, and continually tries to sabotage the cheesy variety magician (Maxi), his yearning for ice-cream climaxing in a drenching melée. The animal contribution is also lo-fi and reassuringly genteel: a brazenly bribed Shetland pony and an eager Patterjack are the cutest mascots. It's all very English, with a put-on American accent. Yet while homespun, it still reaches for the stars – and takes risks. The young Garcia brothers (Antonio and Connor) elicit awe with their lithe, gravity-defying handstands, spinning headstands and Charles Atlas physiques. Their parents, Pablo and Vikki provide tongue-in-cheek jeopardy, dangling from a renegade vintage air-plane. Spanish beefcake Randy Forgione Vega whirls high in the air, wielding hand-straps and old-school machismo. But for elegance, grace and a sensuousness that defines the show's judicious mix of flamboyance, flesh and family-friendly fare, there's no beating Daniela Muñoz Landestoy from Cuba and Noémi Novakovics who hails from Hungary. The pair ascend to the sound of Gershwin's Summertime (blissfully sung by Nell O'Hara) and hang suspended and twirling using just their hair for support (ouch!). It's all over in a flash, yet you intuit the long dedication and sense of personal destiny behind it. We must treasure these folk – and their art-form. An art-form perpetuated with toil, sweat and thrilling bravura by Giffords. Tours to Sept 28; tickets: giffordscircus

Lionesses hero Chloe Kelly jets off for pre-Euros holiday - as she dances and soaks up the sun with her husband and Man United star
Chloe Kelly enjoyed some downtime as she jetted off on holiday with friends ahead of England's European Championship campaign. In a series of snaps on her Instagram account, Kelly showed off her Prada designer sunglasses with the caption: 'Love me some sunshine'. The 27-year-old also shared a group selfie alongside her husband Scott Moore and Manchester United defender and England international Gabby George. The England team-mates then showed off a Tik Tok dance to the viral song Jealousy by Khalil Harrison and Tyler ICU, with Kelly calling on fans to follow her on the short-form video platform. Kelly has had a lot to celebrate since her acrimonious exit from Manchester City in January that saw her accuse the club of 'attempting to 'assassinate my character'. With her career seemingly at a crossroads, the forward was offered a lifeline by Arsenal manager Renee Slegers to return to the club at which she had cut her teeth in the game as a teenager. After joining the Gunners for the remainder of the campaign Kelly quickly became integral to the club's success and she started last month's Women's Champions League final as the north London club secured European glory. As Sarina Wiegman's side prepare to begin the defence of their European crown, Kelly's future destination in club football is still yet to be confirmed. Asked after the Champions League triumph whether she would remain at Arsenal Kelly remained coy in a recent interview. 'Who knows?' She admitted. 'I just know that I've given my all for the club and the club's given their all to me, so I'm always grateful.' However, it appears that talks between player and club are currently underway, with Arsenal noting in their retained list that 'discussions are ongoing' over a new deal for Kelly.
