From Goals To Impact: Covia's Steady Progress Toward Our 2030 Goals

At Covia, we remain committed to advancing our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals with purpose and transparency. In 2024, our team made meaningful strides across a broad range of initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). The table above summarizes our performance against key targets, reflecting our dedication to responsible operations, positive social impact, and ethical governance. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving biodiversity to promoting a safe workplace and supporting our communities, each accomplishment highlights our ongoing commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient future.
Ensure Responsible Operations
Develop a robust Community Action Plan (CAP) at 100% of our locations to facilitate effective communication, identify areas for improvement, and best respond to community needs
Implement Covia's in-house Environmental Management System (EMS) at every site
We reached our goal of having CAPs at 100% of our facilities. These plans provide each facility with a site-specific plan for engaging the community. This approach not only fosters strong community relationships but also enhances our environmental stewardship efforts, allowing us to respond effectively to local needs and share successful strategies company wide.
Our EMS program is fully implemented at 9 sites, and we are working to finalize implementation across our network.
Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Protect Essential Water Supply
Preserve, Restore, and Improve Biodiversity
Improve ratio of land rehabilitated to land restored
Implement conservation and biodiversity initiatives at all sites, with 50% of mining and processing sites achieving WHC certification
Develop a Species-at-Risk (SAR) Plan at 100% of our mining and processing sites where at-risk species are present
At the end of 2024, our ratio of land rehabilitated to land disturbed was 1:2, compared to 1:6 in 2023. We increased land reclamation investment across many sites, most notably Menomonie, Hephzibah, and Junction City.
Of our 45 sites, 20 are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), bringing our total percentage to 44%.In 2024 we expanded implementation of conservation plans, so that 49% of our sites now have a plan in place.
We developed 5 new SAR Plans in 2024, bringing our total percentage to 24%. We will continue to adopt these plans across the remaining sites in the coming years.
Ensure Safety and Health of Our Team Members
Achieve year-over-year improvement in all-incidence rate for team members in support of our Safety value and priorities; the ultimate goal is zero injuries
Achieve year-over-year reduction in the number of job positions potentially overexposed1 to respirable crystalline silica, through the Hierarchy of Controls
We continued to emphasize our commitment to safety through structured training and programs in 2024. Our all-incidence rate was to 0.89 in 2024. We compare this to the industry definition of anything below 1.0 being world- class safety performance.
We continued to invest in measures and capital projects focused on improving dust control at our mining and processing sites. In 2024, the number of job positions potentially overexposed to respirable crystalline silica was 13, compared to 9 in 2023. Please see Safety, Heath, and Security section of the report for more information.

Our team members collectively volunteered 12,420 hours in 2024. In total, employee volunteer hours since our baseline year represent 84% of our goal of 50,000 hours by 2030.
Expand Sustainable Product Offerings
We recorded a 93% completion rate of cybersecurity training across our team in 2024.
We issued monthly cybersecurity messages to further a culture of cybersecurity mindfulness among our team members.
Increase Corporate Transparency
Become a signatory to the UN Global Compact (UNGC) and annually report on alignment with its principles
Continue to enhance transparency through the alignment of reporting with prevailing frameworks or standards

What we know about electric car grants worth £1,500 as first eligible EV models confirmed

The government has unveiled a series of Citroen models eligible under the government's new £650 million electric car grants scheme. The first electric car models eligible for the government's new £650 million electric car grants have been announced. Drivers will be able to save £1,500 with the purchase of new Citroen e-C3, e-C4, e-C5 and e-Berlingo cars, the Department for Transport (DfT) said. The discount will be automatically applied at the point of sale, and will enable motorists purchasing a new electric car to save either £1,500 or £3,750, depending on sustainability criteria. The government's vow to make it cheaper to buy an electric car comes as part of its goal of banning the sale of new fully petrol or diesel cars and vans from 2030. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: 'With the first four models approved today, and more to come over the next few weeks, this summer we're making owning an electric car cheaper, easier and a reality for thousands more people across the UK." Under the government's zero emission vehicle (Zev) mandate, at least 28% of new cars sold by each manufacturer in the UK this year must be zero emission, which generally means pure electric. Across all manufacturers, the figure during the first half of the year was 21.6%. Alexander has already announced £63m worth of funding to boost charging infrastructure, including £25m of support for local authorities to provide at-home charging for motorists who don't have driveways. Another £8m will be spent on powering electric ambulances and medical fleets across 200 sites within the NHS, while road signs for EV charging hubs will be introduced on major A-roads in England. What do we know about the new subsidies for EV drivers? The grants will be funded through a new £650m scheme announced on 14 July, which will be restricted to vehicles priced up to £37,000. The Department for Transport (DfT) said at the time that 23 new models were available for less than £30,000. Amounts given will be based on a car's 'sustainability criteria', the DfT said, with the greenest vehicles placed in band one, meaning a grant of up to £3,750. Band two vehicles will receive up to £1,500. Edmund King, AA president, said: 'This discount of £1,500 for some more affordable EVs will help a number of those with tighter budgets. We look forward to seeing the full list of discounts up to £3,750 on more models to really push the market forward.' Ian Plummer, commercial director of online vehicle marketplace Auto Trader, previously said 'any incentives' to help people buy an electric car are welcome as many drivers are 'put off by the high upfront cost'. Prior to the government's announcement, The Telegraph reported that the grants would provide a huge boost for Nissan, which has a plant in Sunderland, but would be unlikely to help Tesla, whose cars are generally beyond the scheme's price range. How many people are buying EVs? In the first half of this year, electric car sales in the UK increased by a third, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMTT) lobby group. Sales of battery electric cars rose by 34.6% to 224,838 vehicles between the start of January and the end of June. Of the 191,200 cars sold in the UK in June, a quarter (almost 47,400) were electric vehicles. The government wants to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 onwards, although hybrids can be sold until 2035. It says all new cars and vans will have to be 100% zero emission by 2035. How much more expensive are electric cars to buy? The average cost to buy an electric car in the UK is currently about £46,000, according to financial researchers NimbleFins, although it says that prices range from £14,995 (for a Dacia Spring Electric) to as much as £330,000 for a Rolls-Royce Spectre. Among luxury electric brands such as Tesla, Porsche, Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes, the average cost is about £69,000, while a non-luxury EV is about £33,000 on average. NimbleFins said the cost of an average small car is about £22,000, rising to £27,000 for a medium-sized car and £35,000 for an SUV, inclusive of petrol and electric models. The Electric Car Scheme says the average petrol car costs £21,964, compared to about £49,000 for an EV. How much do electric vehicles cost to run? The average cost of running a car in the UK is £3,357, according to NimbleFins. This includes fuel, car insurance, repairs, road tax and the purchase or depreciation per year. It said that despite electricity prices currently being high, fuel costs much less with an EV than a petrol or diesel engine. The average cost for a mile of driving is about 7p on a standard electricity tariff or as low as 2p per mile on a time of use EV tariff, charging the vehicle at off-peak times, such as during the night. For a petrol or diesel car, NimbleFins says the cost of fuel per mile can be anything between 13p and 17p. The Electric Car Scheme says drivers of EVs can save up to £1,500 per year over 10,000 miles in fuel costs than with a petrol or diesel. 1 Hotel Seattle hotel review

Location Located in a residential complex in the shadows of the skyscrapers of Seattle's business district that hosts brands such as Amazon and Google, 1Hotel provides easy access to the main landmarks of the city. It's just a 15-minute walk to the Space Needle and to the iconic Pike Place Market, where you will find the world's first Starbucks, a must-see site for coffee lovers. The hotel is also just a 20-minute cab ride to Seattle's bustling cruise terminal, making it well-situated for passengers before or after a trip. The vibe The hotel feels fresh and new, having only opened in May after replacing and renovating the Denny Park Hotel. It is one of 14 sustainability-focused locations around the world for the 1Hotel group, yet there is a clear local approach. Guests are welcomed into the lobby by a living wall of vegetation in the shape of Washington state's Mount Rainier and a '1' monument using 575 driftwood pieces sourced from private beaches around the Puget Sound by local artist Rebecca Stigora. Nature is brought to life around the hotel with 1,142 plants across the site. Earthy tones on the walls and greenery that surround the soft white furnishings throughout the public spaces give the feel of a safari lodge, where it is easy to relax before venturing out to the urban jungle of Seattle life. Service Staff are keen to impress. The reception desk is staffed around the clock, which is useful if your flight is delayed. Check-in is quick, and a concierge will help take your bags to the room and staff are knowledgeable about the local area. Some logistics may still need ironing out – our late arrival meant the housekeeping service had understandably only finished their clean at 11pm, and we had to request a member of the guest services team to show us how to set up the sofa bed for our kids. Bed and bath The hotel has 153 rooms, including 45 suites, spread across 11 floors. Interiors feature teak wood floors, tapestry wall hangings, and floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking city views, including of the Space Needle. Soft cotton bedding, 55-inch TVs, and bathrobes make things feel homely, while sustainable touches such as chalkboards instead of notepads and bamboo-based tissue paper underscore the eco-conscious ethos. Bathrooms are stocked with Bamford products and include both walk-in rain showers and separate tubs. A wooden coin also encourages guests to participate in the '1 Less Thing' program, letting them donate unwanted clothes to local charity Mary's Place. Food and drink Meals are not included in the base rate, but packages can include dining credits. Breakfast at Drift bar is worth the extra money, especially for the Tropical Blue Colada smoothie – a vibrant mix of pineapple, coconut and blue spirulina. Dinner at La Loba offers an inventive fusion of Catalan tapas with Asian influences. Highlights include smoked candy salmon with truffle cream cheese and oversized crispy potato bravas. The menu caters to dietary needs with gluten-free and vegan options such as avocado salad and pesto-seasoned cauliflower. Facilities There is a gym where you can take part in morning yoga sessions and recharge on Peloton bikes and treadmills. The hotel occasionally hosts events such as leather crafting and flower making. There is no swimming pool, but you can relax in the Drift bar or in the many nature-inspired seating areas indoors and on the roof terrace. You can even borrow one of the hotel's electric Audi Q6 e-trons to test drive and transport you around the city during your stay. Accessibility The hotel is fully accessible, with street-level entry, automatic doors, elevators, braille signage, and service-animal-friendly policies. Rooms with adapted features are available. Pet policy Dogs are welcome for no extra fee and furry friends get their own in-room bed and bowls. Dogs must be kept on a lead in public areas and aren't allowed in the restaurant or gym. Check in/check out? Check in from 4pm; Check out by 12pm. Family-friendly? Children are welcome. There are connecting rooms and others with sofa beds. There is also a hotel package that includes a $100 breakfast credit, a milk and cookies welcome treat and a complimentary in-room movie.
