Attorney General Pam Bondi alleges FBI agents withheld Epstein documents

BBC News28-02-2025
The US Attorney General has accused federal investigators of withholding thousands of documents related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and asked the FBI to release all the information by Friday morning without any omissions. In a public letter, Attorney General Pam Bondi asked FBI director Kash Patel to also investigate why thousands of documents related to Epstein probe were withheld by the agency.Bondi released the "first phase" of newly declassified files on Thursday, but it contained no major new allegations about Epstein nor revelations about his associates.Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking and died by suicide while awaiting trial.
The attorney general demanded all information related to the disgraced financier be turned over by 08:00 EST (13:00 GMT) on Friday "regardless of how it was obtained". "Late yesterday, l learned from a source that the FBI Field Office in New York was in possession of thousands of pages of documents related to the investigation and indictment of Epstein," she wrote in the letter. "Despite my repeated requests, the FBI never disclosed the existence of the files."Additionally, Bondi directed FBI director Patel to conduct an immediate investigation into why her order to the FBI was not followed."You will deliver to me a comprehensive report of your findings and proposed personnel action within 14 days," she said.In a post on X, Patel said the agency was "entering a new era—one that will be defined by integrity, accountability, and the unwavering pursuit of justice". "There will be no cover-ups, no missing documents, and no stone left unturned," he wrote. The declassified files largely contain documents that have been previously leaked but never released in a formal capacity by the US Government, according to a statement released by the justice department. The 10 files include a series of flight logs from Epstein's private jet, plus a partly-redacted "contacts list".While running for the White House, President Donald Trump had promised to release the "Epstein list", a rumoured document that some believe may link high-profile individuals to sex crimes.Bondi was also urged by Republican lawmakers to disclose all information about the disgraced financier. On Thursday afternoon, the White House first handed over the initial batch of 200 files - in binders that read "The Epstein Files: Phase I" - to conservative influencers. The influencers included political commentator Rogan O'Handley, known as DC Draino as well as Libs of TikTok creator Chaya Raichik, US media reported. But the limited information in the latest batch of files disappointed some Republicans, including Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who leads a House Republican task force on government transparency."I nor the task force were given or reviewed the Epstein documents being released today," Luna posted on X. "This is not what we or the American people asked for and a complete disappointment."Conservative commentator Glenn Beck wrote: "The Epstein files are a total joke. Who is subverting POTUS?"Most of the "Epstein docs" over the past several years have come out of civil litigation between one of Epstein's accusers, Virginia Giuffre, and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell. The 66-year-old had pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor in 2008.Ghislaine Maxwell, lost her appeal last year against her own sex trafficking conviction for helping Epstein sexually abuse young girls.

Oil rises 1% on stalled Russia-Ukraine peace talks, strong US demand

NEW YORK/LONDON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Oil prices rose by nearly a dollar a barrel on Thursday as Russia and Ukraine blamed each other for a stalled peace process, and as earlier U.S. data showed signs of strong demand in the top oil consuming nation. Brent crude futures were up 85 cents, or about 1.3%, at $67.69 a barrel at 1:42 p.m. EDT (1742 GMT), having hit a two-week high earlier in the session. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 86 cents, or 1.4%, at $63.57 a barrel. Both contracts climbed more than 1% in the prior session. The path to peace in Ukraine remained uncertain, turning oil traders cautious after a selloff over the past two weeks on hopes that U.S. President Donald Trump would soon negotiate a diplomatic end to Russia's war with its neighbor. Both Moscow and Kyiv have since blamed each other for stalling the peace process. Russia on Thursday launched a major air attack near Ukraine's border with the European Union, while Ukraine claimed to have hit a Russian oil refinery. "Some geopolitical risk premium is slowly being pumped back into the market," oil trading advisory firm Ritterbusch and Associates told clients on Thursday. The uncertainty in the peace talks means that the possibility of tighter sanctions on Russia has resurfaced, said Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM Oil Associates. Oil prices were also supported by a larger-than-expected drawdown from U.S. crude stockpiles in the last week, indicating strong demand. U.S. crude stockpiles fell 6 million barrels in the week ended August 15, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on Wednesday, while analysts had expected a draw of 1.8 million barrels. "These tight domestic stockpiles stand in contrast to the oversupply outlook projected by both the IEA and EIA for 2026, challenging traders' broader market expectations," StoneX analyst Alex Hodes told clients. Investors were also looking to the Jackson Hole economic conference in Wyoming for signals on a possible Fed interest rate cut next month. The annual gathering of central bankers begins on Thursday, with Fed Chair Jerome Powell scheduled to speak on Friday.

Rep. Chip Roy announces run for Texas AG

Published: | Updated: A top Republican who has been a thorn in the side of the MAGA agenda has announced his intention to leave Congress. Texas Congressman Chip Roy announced that he plans to depart Capitol Hill after four terms and seek the role of Texas state attorney general back home in the Lone Star state. His decision comes after he earned the wrath of Donald Trump for getting in the way of his MAGA agenda. In a media release announcing his latest move, Roy noted that 'watching Texans unite in response to the devastating Hill Country floods made clear that I want to come home.' The deadly floods that raged through Texas earlier this summer claimed at least 135 lives, including the lives of over two dozen young girls and their counselors at the Christian summer camp, Camp Mystic. Roy also added in his media release that he wants to take his 'experience in Congress, as a federal prosecutor, and as First Assistant Attorney General to fight for Texas from Texas.' The congressman previously worked under current Texas AG Ken Paxton, who is running in a messy primary for U.S. Senate against incumbent John Cornyn. Roy notably turned on his former boss when Paxton was accused of 'bribery, abuse of office, and other charges' back in 2020, then urging him to resign from office. During his time in Congress, Roy has at times not been afraid to buck members of his own political party, causing headaches for House Speaker Mike Johnson and even President Donald Trump. Roy, along with other members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, were holdouts on President Trump's $3.3 trillion tax and spending cut bill. They caused a scene threatening to tank Trump's 'one big, beautiful, bill' due to projected increases in the national debt tied to the package. Despite weeks of threats, he eventually folded and voted for the bill. Roy also caused a headache for Speaker Mike Johnson's re-election bid in January. He didn't want Johnson to be elected speaker again because he claimed he wasn't conservative enough to lead the Republicans. Again, he eventually got in line and backed Johnson's re-election. It's become somewhat of a pattern for Roy to threaten to go against GOP leadership on key priorities, but then eventually fold and support. And it hasn't gone unnoticed by Trump, who has called him out publicly. Back in December of 2024, Trump accused Roy of 'getting in the way' of his agenda, and called for Roy to face a primary challenger for his congressional seat. Utah Senator Mike Lee posted on X that there is 'no more fearless and respected conservative in Congress than @chiproytx' adding that he 'wholeheartedly' endorses Roy in 'his campaign for Texas Attorney General' and that 'Chip has delivered for Trump in Congress.' In 2023, Chip Roy endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for president before he had even announced a formal bid for the office. At the time, Roy noted that the 'next President of the United States must be a vibrant and energetic leader with the faith, vision, and courage to chart a new course.'

And it hasn't gone unnoticed by Trump, who has called him out publicly. Back in December of 2024, Trump accused Roy of 'getting in the way' of his agenda, and called for Roy to face a primary challenger for his congressional seat. Despite Roy's tough track record with GOP leadership, other lawmakers on Capitol Hill took time Thursday to congratulate Roy on his achievements during his time in Washington. Tennessee Representative Tim Burchett was one of Roy's colleagues to weigh in on the Texans' decision, posting on X that he hates to lose his friend in Congress, despite the desire to sometimes 'pinch his ears', adding that he 'will miss him.' Utah Senator Mike Lee posted on X that there is 'no more fearless and respected conservative in Congress than @chiproytx' adding that he 'wholeheartedly' endorses Roy in 'his campaign for Texas Attorney General' and that 'Chip has delivered for Trump in Congress.' At the time, Roy noted that the 'next President of the United States must be a vibrant and energetic leader with the faith, vision, and courage to chart a new course.' Roy is one of several high-profile members of the House Freedom Caucus to announce decisions to seek other offices, mainly in their home states. Rep. Ralph Norman announced a run for South Carolina governor last month, Rep. Andy Biggs will be seeking the same office in Arizona, and Rep. Byron Donalds is running to be governor of Florida.
