All-round Pollard, bowlers knock Knight Riders out in last-over thriller

All-round Pollard, bowlers knock Knight Riders out in last-over thriller

Mint7 hours ago
Broward County [Florida], July 6 (ANI): Kieron Pollard's clutch half-century and game-changing penultimate over hammered the final nail in the coffin for the Los Angeles Knight Riders, who lost by 6 runs, effectively eliminating them from playoff contention in the third season of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025.
In a match where momentum swung wildly at extremities, the Knight Riders' inability to close out the chase proved costly. Jason Holder's men fell short despite needing just 29 off the last three overs with eight wickets in hand, as per a press release from MLC.
The tacky, slow pitch also challenged MI New York early. The men in blue suffered a shaky start, losing their top order in quick succession during the powerplay. Shadley van Schalkwyk provided key breakthroughs, removing Quinton de Kock and Tajinder Singh, while Corne Dry dismissed the tournament's leading run-scorer, Monank Patel, thanks to a stunning catch in the outfield by Saif Badar.
Skipper Nicholas Pooran attempted to steady the innings with a cautious 30 off 24 balls before being dismissed via a juggling catch behind the stumps by Unmukt Chand off Sunil Narine. Michael Bracewell followed shortly after, holing out to Holder at long-on as Dry's clever change of pace paid off again.
With half the side gone and the scoreboard barely keeping pace with the overs, Pollard began his assault in the 17th over, launching Andre Russell for back-to-back sixes. After a quiet over from Holder, Pollard went again--dispatching van Schalkwyk for two more sixes before falling for a vital 50 off 36, caught by Holder, whose brilliant final over helped restrict MINY to a competitive total of 142/9.
In response, LAKR lost their dangerous opener Andre Fletcher early in the second over before Unmukt Chand and Alex Hales began to rebuild. Hales' lean run this season continued, making 21 off 26, while Chand played anchor with a slow but steady knock as the Knight Riders chased their first win.
But MI New York's varied bowling attack kept things tight in the middle overs. Chand and Sherfane Rutherford struggled to find boundaries, and though LAKR were still in control, needing just 29 off the last 18 balls, Pollard's tight penultimate over--conceding only 5 runs and claiming Rutherford's wicket--tilted the game dramatically.
With 16 needed off the final over, LA Knight Riders made a debatable call to retire Chand and send in skipper Holder. But Ehsan Adil held his nerve brilliantly, sealing a 6-run win that knocked LA Knight Riders out of the tournament.
The nail-biting victory reignited MI New York's playoff hopes. They now sit level on points with the Seattle Orcas but boast a superior net run rate--a potentially decisive factor if both sides win their final group matches.
Brief Score: MI New York 142/9 in 20 overs (Kieron Pollard 50, Nicholas Pooran 30; Shadley van Schalkwyk 3/24) beat Los Angeles Knight Riders 136/4 in 20 overs (Unmukt Chand 59, Sherfane Rutherford 29; Pollard 1/12). (ANI)

Young Flintoff registers first Youth ODI century against India

ANI Published 6 Jul 2025, 05:09 PM IST Worcester [UK], July 6 (ANI): Batting at No. 4 in the fourth Youth ODI against India at the County Ground in Worcester, 17-year-old Rocky Flintoff walked in during the 15th over with England at 104/2. Openers BJ Dawkins (67) and Joseph Moores (52) had given the hosts a strong start while chasing a big target of 364, as per Wisden. Flintoff began cautiously and took his time to settle in. His first boundary came only on his 20th ball, a straight six off spinner Naman Pushpak. The momentum picked up in the 25th over when he smashed three consecutive fours off Deepesh Devendran. From 13 off 20 balls, he accelerated smartly and reached his fifty in 41 deliveries. He was particularly dominant against Pushpak, scoring 36 runs off him, including two sixes and two fours. Flintoff brought up his maiden Youth ODI hundred in the 43rd over, reaching the milestone in 88 balls with a two through the off side. He was eventually dismissed for 107 as the ninth wicket. This was Flintoff's second century for England U19, his first came in a Youth Test against Sri Lanka last July, where he scored 106. Earlier this year, at just 16, he became the youngest player to score a hundred for England A or Lions, with a remarkable century from No. 9 against Australia A. He also became Lancashire's youngest debutant in the County Championship last August. Despite Flintoff's heroics, England fell short. Earlier in the day, 14-year-old IPL sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed the fastest century in Youth ODI history, and Vihaan Malhotra added 129 at over a run-a-ball to power India to 363/9. Apart from Flintoff and the two openers, no other England batter made more than 20. When Flintoff was dismissed, England still needed 80 from 40 balls with just one wicket left. They were eventually bowled out for 308, giving India a 55-run win and a 3-1 lead in the five-match series. (ANI)

"He's one of the best batters in the world": Justin Greaves hails Steve Smith for his fifty in Grenada test

New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): Already 1-0 ahead in the series, Australia's advantage in the West Indies Test series was furthered when they extended their lead to 254 runs on Day Three of the St George's Test. On a surface of variable bounce, Steve Smith stood class apart, hitting an excellent 71 off 119 balls. 'He's one of the best batters in the world for a reason, but we always knew that he was going to come, and he was always going to be positive,' West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves said, as quoted from ICC. 'We didn't start our best at him, but Steve is Steve, he just at a really good innings.' Giving good support to Smith was Australia's number three, Cameron Green, who overcame indifferent recent form (48 runs from five innings) to score a fighting 52. 'I don't think I ever felt comfortable out there. I think last night was tricky with the new ball, and had to start all over again, and then there were a few ball changes. I never really felt at any point that it was that good,' Cameron Green said. Green, however, lauded Smith, with whom he shared a 93-run partnership. 'You'd probably ask a different question to Steve, he was batting on a different wicket,' he added. When questioned about how West Indies would approach the Test, Justin Greaves stated that despite the Green-Smith vigil, the hosts remained positive. 'For us try and keep Australia under 300 (on Day 4), that is one of our main goals,' Justin Greaves said. On their batting approach for the chase, Greaves hoped that the West Indies batters could follow a methodology similar to Australia's middle-order batters. 'As a batting group we need to be positive when we go out to bat. Probably take some notes from Travis Head, Beau Webster or Alex Carey on just having that positive mindset,' he added. Half-centuries from Alex Carey and Beau Webster helped Australia reach 286 in their first innings. Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph and Justin Greaves took two wickets apiece. West Indies was bowled out for 253 and conceded a lead of 33 runs. Brendon King scored 75 runs. For Australia, Nathan Lyon was the pick of the bowlers and took three wickets. Captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood took two wickets each. (ANI)

Deepika's brilliant field goal against Netherlands nominated for Poligras Magic Skill Award

New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): Indian Women's Hockey Team forward Deepika has been nominated for the Poligras Magic Skill Award for her incredible solo field goal against World No.1, the Netherlands during the 2024-25 FIH Hockey Pro League season, as per a press release from Hockey India. The nominations for the Poligras Magic Skill Award for the 2024/25 FIH Hockey Pro League season were released on Friday, and the deadline to vote is 14th July at 3:29 a.m. IST. The winner will be announced once the voting ends. The winner of the Poligras Magic Skill Award is decided by hockey fans across the world based on who they think had the best moment and goal during the season. Deepika's iconic moment took place in February 2025 during the Bhubaneswar leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League when the Indian Team defeated the Netherlands in the shootout after a 2-2 draw at the Kalinga Stadium. In the 35th minute, Deepika scored an amazing field goal as India were trailing by two goals. In the 35th minute, Deepika dribbled down the left flank brilliantly as she went around the Netherlands' backline, kissed the baseline, dinked the ball over a defender's stick and finished the move with a wonderful strike past the keeper and into the net. 'That goal against the Netherlands is one of the most special moments of my career. Everything just clicked and it helped us equalise and win the game in shootout. I'm honoured to be nominated for the Poligras Magic Skill Award and grateful for the support of our fans. Moments like these are what we train so hard for. Your votes and support motivate me to keep pushing my limits and give it my all for India. I also want to thank my coaches, the support staff, and most importantly, my teammates for their constant encouragement and belief in me,' the 21-year-old prolific attacker said as quoted by a press release from Hockey India. Apart from Deepika's goal, the women nominees for the Poligras Magic Skill Award feature two more wonderful flashes of brilliance on the field. Patricia Alvarez's incredible 3D Skills and goal for Spain against Australia has made the cut. Patricia showed brilliant technique to win the ball and juggle the ball with her stick over the rushing goalkeeper and found the net. The third nomination is for the wonderful team goal by Australia's women's team against England. The Hockeyroos orchestrated a brilliant passage of play with five passes in the opposing half and a brilliant strike into the goal. (ANI)
