Gwinnett County Police in Georgia are warning car buyers to be cautious when shopping online, especially on Facebook Marketplace.
Authorities have uncovered a scheme in which thieves are selling stolen vehicles — specifically Honda CR-Vs — with altered Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) to unsuspecting buyers. The cars are primarily stolen from New York, given fake VINs and resold in the Atlanta area.

Public information officer Juan Madiedo of the Gwinnett County Police said the vehicles are being sold for between $29,000 and $30,000.
'They are pretty pricey,' he told Atlanta News First. 'They are making out with a lot of victims' money.'
The investigation began when a local buyer reported VIN inconsistencies after taking their CR-V to a mechanic. That tip led police to uncover multiple victims and triggered a Facebook Marketplace sting, where investigators posed as buyers. The seller tried to flee but was caught.
A second suspect, Karen Mendez, remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact 911.

VIN fraud — or 'VIN cloning' — involves copying a legitimate VIN from a similar car and placing it on a stolen one. The scammer makes the vehicle appear clean and legal during resale.
The fraud has reached beyond individual buyers. Atlanta Used Cars unknowingly purchased a stolen vehicle through a Carvana auction. They only learned the truth after a customer reported it stolen. Authorities later traced the vehicle back to Hertz Rental Car Company.
'Saving up money for a down payment or the whole car, purchasing it and being accused of stealing it definitely from law enforcement is definitely not a good experience,' said Shameel Shad, the dealership's general manager.
Carvana reimbursed the dealership after confirming the fraud. Shad said the experience forced his team to tighten their inspection process. They now triple-check VINs on the windshield, driver-side door and vehicle computer.
Gwinnett County Police and consumer advocates recommend several steps to avoid becoming a victim of VIN fraud:
Meet in a public place: Complete private car sales at a police station or designated 'safe exchange' zone.
Cross-check the VIN: Make sure the number matches on the windshield, driver-side door, and title documents. Any mismatch is a red flag.
Use an OBD2 scanner: These tools reveal the VIN stored in the car's electronic system, which scammers can't easily alter.
Run a vehicle history report: Use services like Carfax, AutoCheck or the free VINCheck tool from the National Insurance Crime Bureau to check for theft or salvage records.
Trust your instincts: If a deal seems too good to be true or the seller avoids basic questions, walk away.
'There is an endless amount of ways that people can commit fraud in this business, VIN swapping is the simplest and easiest to catch,' Shad said. 'But there are a lot of other crafty ways.'

Romanian pleads guilty to swatting calls targeting former US president, lawmakers
A Romanian citizen pleaded guilty on Monday to leading a years-long conspiracy targeting dozens of individuals — including members of Congress, places of worship, and a former United States president — with 'swatting' calls and bomb threats intended to provoke fear and solicit a police response. Thomasz Szabo, 26, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington, D.C., to one count of conspiracy and one count of threats and false information regarding explosives. The sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 23. Federal prosecutors say Szabo was the leader of an online community that engaged in bomb threats and 'swatting' — a term that refers to making false reports of an ongoing threat of violence — since late 2020. 'This defendant led a dangerous swatting criminal conspiracy, deliberately threatening dozens of government officials with violent hoaxes and targeting our nation's security infrastructure from behind a screen overseas,' Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. 'This case reflects our continued focus on protecting the American people and working with international partners to stop these threats at their source,' she continued. Szabo made numerous false reports to law enforcement, including in December 2020, when he threatened to commit a mass shooting at New York City synagogues and, in January 2021, when he threatened to detonate explosives at the U.S. Capitol and to kill then-President-elect Biden, according to a DOJ press release. Members of Szabo's group then engaged in a 'spree of swatting and bomb threats' from Dec. 24, 2023, to early January 2024, the DOJ said. During that time, the group targeted at least 25 members of Congress or their family members; at least six officials who were, either then or previously, serving as a senior Executive Branch official, including multiple Cabinet-level officials; at least 13 senior federal law enforcement officials; and various members of the judiciary, according to the DOJ. The DOJ said the group also targeted at least 27 officials who were serving at the time, or who previously served, as state government officials or their family members; four religious institutions; and multiple members of the media. In recent years, political violence and 'swatting' incidents have been on the rise, in particular targeting members of Congress and other high-profile public figures. More than 15,000 nurses at hospitals in the Twin Cities and 2,600 nurses at hospitals in Duluth have been negotiating a new contract that has yet to come to fruition, and the deadlock is resulting in an "informational picket" outside 13 hospitals in Minnesota on Wednesday. Contracts for Twin Cities nurses expired last week and those for nurses in Duluth are set to expire on June 30. The Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) has announced that workers will participate in a picket amid concerns that hospitals are operating at unsafe staffing levels that compromise patient care and push many nurses to leave the profession. "Nurses are doing everything they can to keep patients safe, but we are being stretched beyond our limits," Chris Rubesch, a nurse and president of the MNA, said in May. "Patients are facing longer waits, and overworked staff are facing dangerous conditions." Additionally, nurses fear for their physical safety at current staffing levels. Healthcare workers are five times more likely to be injured by an assault on the job than the average American worker, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That report also shows that healthcare workers saw a steady rise in the rate of nonfatal workplace violence from 2011 to 2018. A 2002 study reported that in hospitals with a high patient-to-nurse ratio, each extra patient assigned to a nurse is associated with a 7% increase in the likelihood of death within 30 days of admission, per Minnesota Public Radio. Additionally, that study showed that the stress of each new patient assigned to those nurses was associated with a significant increase in the risk of burnout. The current staffing levels "prioritize maximizing revenue rather than protecting patients," the union claims. "MNA nurses are sounding the alarm: hospital executives are treating staffing like a budget line, not a life-or-death issue," the MNA said in a statement. "On June 4, the public will see what solidarity looks like and what happens when nurses step up to protect their patients." In a statement to Bring Me The News, Allina Health reiterated that there will be no disruption to patient care during the picket, adding, "Now, more than ever, negotiations must reflect the reality of rising costs, declining reimbursements and uncertainty around programs like Medicaid. We remain focused on a responsible contract agreement that ensures we can maintain access to care and the high-quality services people depend on." The pickets will take place at 11 Twin Cities hospitals, including Children's Minnesota/United Hospital at 33 Smith Ave. N in St. Paul and, later in the day, at Fairview Southdale Hospital at 6401 France Ave. S in Edina. In Duluth, nurses will hold informational pickets at Essentia and Aspirus St. Luke's hospitals. "The nurses' union is expending considerable energy on events such as this when that energy would be better spent at the negotiating table, completing these talks," says Paul Omodt of Omodt & Associates, a PR company that specializes in crisis management and represents several of the hospitals involved in the negotiations. "There are important topics left to discuss and we remain ready to negotiate in good faith. We encourage the nurses' union to bring forth all the counterproposals that are due to move these talks forward." The MNA's action is separate but in step with a picket that took place at four Allina clinics on Tuesday morning among unionized doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. This group unionized in October 2023, forming the largest private-sector doctors' union in the country with roughly 600 members at Allina clinics in Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is still at the table, negotiating for the group's first contract. The contract negotiations have slowed, with a significant point of friction being that primary care physicians are looking to be compensated for administrative work that includes paperwork and responding to patient emails, the Star Tribune reports. A representative for Allina tells Bring Me The News that it is negotiating in good faith with the Doctors Council SEIU and seeks "to reach responsible agreements that maintain competitive pay and benefits for our providers while ensuring that we can sustain our caring mission during these extremely uncertain economic times." Allina has proposed cutting compensation for union members, while the system reported $5.8 billion in revenue in 2024, the Minnesota Reformer reports. Wednesday's informational picket is not a strike or work stoppage inside the hospitals.
