MSRTC to operate passenger app for booking taxi, auto rides
Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI) The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will operate an aggregator-based passenger app aimed at providing all transport services through a single platform, an official said on Tuesday.
The transport body, in a release, said that state Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who is also chairman of the corporation, made this announcement during a high-level meeting on Monday.
The app, developed under the Central and State government's aggregator policy, would offer transport services such as buses, autorickshaws, taxis, and e-buses through a single platform.
Sarnaik further said that the MSRTC, with its robust infrastructure, workforce, and experience, was best suited to operate the app, which is expected to generate a new revenue stream for the transport body while providing commuters a trusted and transparent service.
According to the release, a consensus has been reached on naming the app 'Chhava Ride'.
The minister pointed out that while private aggregators were reaping profits using unregulated apps, often exploiting both drivers and passengers, the government-backed model would be a reliable and fair alternative.
Meanwhile, Dr Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, president of the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, criticised the move, alleging that the government is attempting to enter the private app-based transport sector under the pretext of reform, instead of resolving the ongoing grievances of cab and autorickshaw drivers.
He warned of staging a protest if the government fails to address their concerns. PTI KK ARU

Delhi Police briefs over 4,000 private security guards ahead of Independence Day
New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) Delhi Police on Sunday held interaction-cum-briefing sessions with more than 4000 private security personnel, or 'Praharis', across all districts for public safety duties during Independence Day and the festive season, officials said. The sessions aimed to reinforce the role of private security guards as partners in maintaining law and order and to brief them on security protocols, including identifying and responding to potential threats, an official statement said. The guards were given guidelines on the dos and don'ts of their duties and provided with security kits comprising a cap, reflective jacket, baton and whistle. Commissioner of Police S B K Singh addressed 'Praharis' at two major programmes — at the Multipurpose Hall, North Campus, University of Delhi, attended by around 800 guards, and at the Lotus Temple auditorium in the South-East district, attended by around 300 guards. 'Praharis are an indispensable link in community policing and their cooperation enhances the reach, responsiveness and effectiveness of law," Singh said. The statement said private security personnel who attended Saturday's briefings in different districts included — south east (300), south (305), Rohini (300), outer north (383), north west (215), west (230), outer (160), Dwarka (362), Shahdara (238), east (253), north east (194), south west (180), New Delhi (97), north (400) and central (400). During the interactive meetings, guards were advised to conduct polite but firm frisking where required, maintain constant observation of surroundings, report suspicious persons or activities to police, stay alert to unattended items and assist in crowd management during celebrations, the statement added. Netanyahu To Allow Foreign Journalists In War-Torn Gaza: 'We Have Ordered The Military To...'
Israel had so far blocked most foreign reporters from independently accessing Gaza since it launched its military offensive after the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday announced a plan to allow more foreign journalists to report inside the war-torn Gaza with the military, in a rare press conference where he offered more details about his vision of victory against Hamas in the ongoing conflict. Israel had so far blocked most foreign reporters from independently accessing the territory since it launched its military offensive there after Hamas' unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people. Officials have often cited security as the reason for not allowing foreign journalists there. 'We have decided and have ordered, directed the military to bring in foreign journalists, more foreign journalists, a lot," Netanyahu said during Sunday's press conference. 'There's a problem with assuring security, but I think it can be done in a way that is responsible and careful to preserve your own safety." However, Netanyahu did not provide any specifics on the plan. Global press outlets have relied on local journalists on the ground in Gaza to provide reporting and footage from the war for a long time, as access to Gaza has been tightly controlled for the 22 months of war.
