57 soldiers rescued after being kidnapped in southwest Colombia

BOGOTA (Reuters) -The Colombian army and police rescued 57 soldiers held for two days in a mountainous southwestern region that is under pressure from leftist guerrillas, the military said on X on Monday.
The troops were detained near the village of El Plateado in Cauca province, a strategic area for drug trafficking where security forces launched an operation in October 2024 to expel illegal armed groups.
The region is a stronghold of a dissident faction of the former FARC guerrilla group, which rejected a 2016 peace deal. Authorities accuse the group of recruiting minors and pressuring civilians to resist the presence of state forces.

Arab states temporarily close airspace amid Iran strike on US base in Qatar

Qatar temporariy closed its airspace on Monday (June 23) night. - Photo: Reuters ISTANBUL (BERNAMA-ANADOLU): Several Arab nations temporarily closed their airspace late Monday (June 23)as a precautionary measure amid heightened tensions in the region following an Iranian missile strike on a United States (US) military base in Qatar, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. The Qatari Foreign Ministry announced the closure of its airspace, citing the need to safeguard the safety of citizens, residents, and visitors amid escalating regional volatility. Bahrain's Civil Aviation Affairs Department similarly confirmed a suspension of air navigation over the kingdom in response to unfolding developments. In Kuwait, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation ordered a temporary airspace closure, prompting Kuwait Airways to suspend all flights. Iraq's Ministry of Transport also closed national airspace, including southern regions, halting all inbound and outbound air traffic. Oman Air, in a statement, said it had suspended flights to and from Manama, Dubai, Doha, and Kuwait due to the regional situation. The airline warned of potential delays across its wider network due to extended flight paths. EgyptAir, meanwhile, announced the cancellation of its services between Cairo and various Gulf cities, stating that operations would resume only once the security situation improves. The wave of airspace closures came after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at the US military's Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday. The strike followed an earlier US offensive on Sunday (June 22) targeting three of Iran's nuclear facilities - Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan - marking a dramatic intensification of hostilities. However, since then, US President Donald Trump has announced that Iran and Israel had agreed to a "total ceasefire". These developments are part of a broader escalation in the US-backed Israeli campaign against Iran that began on June 13. - Bernama-Anadolu

Mexican man allegedly aided by Wisconsin judge agrees to guilty plea

(Reuters) -A Mexican man who prosecutors say briefly evaded arrest with the help of a Wisconsin judge has agreed to plead guilty to illegally entering the United States. Federal prosecutors in Milwaukee on Monday filed a plea agreement with Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, 31, resolving an illegal reentry charge filed against him after federal agents had sought his arrest at a Milwaukee courthouse on April 18. On that date, he appeared before Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan in a battery case, and prosecutors have alleged Dugan misdirected the agents and escorted Flores-Ruiz to a side exit to help him escape. The officers caught him outside the courthouse. The judge was later indicted on charges of obstruction and concealing a person wanted for arrest. She has pleaded not guilty. Flores-Ruiz is slated to appear for a plea hearing on August 4. He faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison and agreed to be deported after his sentence, according to the plea agreement. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A lawyer for Dugan declined to comment. The case against Dugan came after the U.S. Justice Department under Republican President Donald Trump vowed to investigate local officials who impede the administration's aggressive immigration enforcement. According to the plea agreement, Flores-Ruiz was deported in 2013 after he first entered the United States, then illegally reentered the country. REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov/File Photo (Reuters) -Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said early on Tuesday that Russian air defences had downed two Ukrainian drones heading for the city overnight. Sobyanin, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said specialists were examining the debris of at least one drone downed after midnight. The mayor said a third drone targeting the capital had been repelled earlier in the evening. Russia's defence ministry reported that air defence units had destroyed nine drones in a 90-minute period before midnight, including nine over the border regions of Kursk and Bryansk. Ukraine has launched drone attacks on a wide range of targets in recent months, some a long distance from the Ukrainian border. In one attack this month, dubbed "Operation Spider's Web," Ukrainian drones targeted long-range military aircraft at a number of Russian bases. In recent months, Russia has stepped up mass drone attacks against Ukrainian cities. Waves of Russian drones and missiles swarming in and around Kyiv killed 10 people overnight on Sunday.
