Music legend plays secret set at Yorkshire pub ahead of huge arena shows

Coldplay's Chris Martin stunned fans at a small local Yorkshire pub with an impromptu gig ahead of the band's stadium shows. The vocalist, 48, dropped into The Puzzle Hall Inn in Sowerby Bridge last night to play some of the band's biggest songs in front of a tiny crowd. In footage from the show, the Fix You singer joked with the crowd: 'Normally I have a crew of 250 people.' After being heckled, he teased: 'The last time I got booed was in Romania by 60,000 people… so you're nothing.' As well as singing songs from his own back catalogue, Chris also sang a rendition of Whitney Houston's I Want To Dance With Somebody. Closing the performance, he thanked fans for their support, telling fans heading to their Hull shows on August 18 and 19 can expect a special cover song. 'Thank you for letting me play at The Puzzle Inn. Normally I rehearse on my own, you see, so it's nice to have some company,' he said (per Halifax Courier). 'I spoke with this guy earlier, so I'm going to do one of his songs,' he said, referring to Sir Elton John, before singing Rocket Man. 'What do you think the chances are we could keep this a secret between us? A 93% chance?' He continued: 'I want to sincerely say thank you so much for letting me play in your garden, and on Monday in Hull I'll be thinking of you all and how kind you've been to a southerner. I'm very grateful.' Their string of UK arena shows will hopefully be a quieter run than their US tour after Chris went viral for exposing the Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR manager Kristin Cabot's affair at one of their gigs. The pair were caught embracing on a Jumbotron at a Coldplay concert in Boston, before abruptly trying to hide. The clip, in which Chris Martin can be heard jokingly questioning whether they're having an affair, was shared online and quickly went viral. Both Byron and Cabot have since resigned from Astonomer in the fallout, which has seen plenty of memes and recreations of the moment swirling online. More Trending The clip was filmed by Grace Springer, 28, from New Jersey, who stood by her decision to share it online. She told The US Sun: 'I had no idea who the couple was. Just thought I caught an interesting reaction to the kiss cam and decided to post it. 'A part of me feels bad for turning these people's lives upside down, but, play stupid games… win stupid prizes. 'I hope their partners can heal from this and get a second chance at the happiness they deserve with their future still in front of them.' Got a story? Chris Martin surprises fans with impromptu pub gig in Calderdale

Children in their pyjamas and their parents lined up outside a small community pub in West Yorkshire last night after hearing that Chris Martin was performing an impromptu gig. The Coldplay star showed up to the Puzzle Hall Inn in Calderdale for an hour-long set before chatting and taking pictures with fans and even giving out tickets to his Hull show on Monday. One man said he woke up his two teenage daughters to tell them Martin was "down the road" and take them to the gig when he got a call to say the singer was at the Varley told the BBC: "Imagine being 17 and you like Coldplay and your dad blunders in and asks do want to go and see Chris Martin right dressed we're going in five minutes." Mr Varley, from Halifax, added: "I just bundled them in the car and got there just as he was starting."People just turned up for a drink and saw Chris Martin unloading pianos - can you believe that?" He said after the gig at the Sowerby Bridge venue, "loads of people" started arriving in cars including "kids in jim jams" to catch a glimpse of the band. "Chris was really chatty and really engaged and even put a picture on his piano that one of the customers' children had made for him. "He made a big fuss of it and said he would 'treasure it forever'."He just came across as a really nice guy and said thank you to everyone on the way out." There were only about 100 people in the audience and another fan said that after chatting to him about some local disadvantaged children, Martin gave them 10 tickets to his next show at Craven Park Stadium in Hull, the penultimate stop on his world tour. Mr Varley, who is on the board of directors for the Puzzle Hall, said the venue did have an inkling Martin would be coming but most of the punters had no idea. He added: "It would have had to be kept under wraps due to security otherwise thousands of people would have turned up."The Puzzle Hall Inn is a "real ale pub" in Sowerby Bridge that supports "local people, suppliers and independent business", according to its website.
