Earthquake of magnitude 3.9 strikes Afghanistan; third since June 28
ANI Asia
An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck Afghanistan on Wednesday, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said.
According to the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 15 km, making it susceptible to aftershocks.
In a post on X, the NCS stated, "EQ of M: 3.9, On: 02/07/2025 00:44:52 IST, Lat: 36.63 N, Long: 71.38 E, Depth: 15 Km, Location: Afghanistan."
Earlier on June 30, another earthquake of magnitude 4.9 jolted Afghanistan.
In a post on X, NCS wrote, "EQ of M: 4.9, On: 30/06/2025 08:02:35 IST, Lat: 36.77 N, Long: 71.13 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Afghanistan."
Earlier, on June 28, another earthquake of magnitude 4.3 struck the region at a depth of 120 km.
In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.3, On: 28/06/2025 20:01:13 IST, Lat: 36.37 N, Long: 71.06 E, Depth: 120 Km, Location: Afghanistan."
Shallow earthquakes like this one are more dangerous than deeper ones due to their greater energy release closer to the Earth's surface. This causes stronger ground shaking and increased damage to structures and casualties, compared to deeper earthquakes, which lose energy as they travel to the surface.
Afghanistan has a history of powerful earthquakes, and the Hindu Kush Mountain range is a geologically active area where quakes occur every year, according to the Red Cross.
Afghanistan sits on numerous fault lines between the Indian and the Eurasian tectonic plates, with a fault line also running directly through Herat. Its location on several active fault lines along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it a seismically active region. These plates meet and collide, causing frequent seismic activity.
As per the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including seasonal flooding, landslides and earthquakes.
These frequent earthquakes in Afghanistan cause damage to vulnerable communities, which are already grappling with decades of conflict and underdevelopment and have left them with little resilience to cope with multiple simultaneous shocks, UNOCHA noted.

St Thomas Day 2025: History, Tradition And Yeshu Bhakti Divas Observance In India
Last Updated: St Thomas Day 2025: St Thomas Day was originally celebrated on December 21 as it was traditionally considered the date of his death. St Thomas Day 2025: St Thomas Day is observed globally on July 3. The celebration honours Saint Thomas, who was believed to be one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ. The missionary is regarded as the patron saint of India. St Thomas Day was originally celebrated on December 21 as it was traditionally considered the date of his death. However, in 1969, the Roman Catholic Church moved the observance to July 3. St Thomas Day 2025: History It is said that St Thomas had arrived in India in 52 AD. He is credited with propagating the gospel of Jesus as far as the Indian subcontinent. Even though the date of the special day commemorating his life and legacy was changed in the latter half of the 20th century, most Anglicans stuck with the original date of the observance. The Eastern Orthodox Church, on the other hand, observes the occasion on October 6. St Thomas Day 2025: Significance St Thomas was allegedly stabbed to death at the Parangimalai hillock in present-day Chennai in AD 72. The site is now known as Saint Thomas Mount. It is believed that St Thomas's initial skepticism about the resurrection of Jesus Christ was the reason why he was given the nickname 'Doubting Thomas". He supposedly landed on the coastline of Kerala, at a location in present-day Thrissur district, when he reached India. Various religious texts reckon that Saint Thomas laid the foundation of Christianity in India and evangelised the populace of Malabar Coast. St Thomas Day 2025: Traditions Legend has it that St Thomas distributed among the poor the money that he was allotted when he was commissioned by an Indian king to construct a palace. In line with this particular tale, several customs associated with St Thomas Day seek to encourage charity. Special masses and prayer services are also hosted to mark the occasion. Regions with notable presence of Syrian Christians also witness special processions on St Thomas Day. Yeshu Bhakti Divas Observance In India Indian Christians celebrate Yeshu Bhakti Divas, also known as Indian Christian, on July 3. It is a relatively new observance. Aligned with St Thomas Day, Yeshu Bhakti Divas is meant as an annual occasion for Indian Christians to celebrate the 'person and message' of Jesus Christ. Plugging Kitchen Appliances Into Extension Cords? Here's Why You Should Stop It Immediately
In most Indian kitchens, space is limited, sockets are few, and appliances are many. Obviously, it is tempting to use an extension cord when your sandwich maker, microwave, or air fryer needs a power source. After all, what harm could a little multi-plug or extension board do, right? But here's where many of us unknowingly put our homes and kitchens at risk. Using extension cords for heavy-duty kitchen appliances isn't just a shortcut, but can be extremely dangerous for your house. If you are someone who uses extension cords in the kitchen, this one is for you! Here's why you should avoid this practice at all costs. Why You Shouldn't Plug Kitchen Appliances Into Extension Cords 1. Kitchen Appliances Take More Power Than You Think Blenders, toasters, or even electric kettles may look small, but they require a lot of power. Unlike a phone charger or laptop adapter, these appliances draw a lot of current to generate heat or run motors. Extension cords are typically designed for light to moderate loads and not the high wattage that kitchen devices demand. 2. Risk Of Overheating One of the biggest dangers of using an extension cord with a kitchen appliance is the risk of overheating. Extension cords, especially the inexpensive ones sold at local markets, don't have the insulation or wiring strength to handle continuous high loads. This can cause the cord to become hot, melt internally, or even cause a fire in some cases. In the kitchen, you are already surrounded by heat, oil, and flammable items, so you don't want to risk it. 3. Extension Cords Can't Handle Simultaneous Loads Many households use one extension board to power multiple gadgets. Plugging a toaster, mixer grinder, and microwave together may seem efficient, but it pushes the extension cord beyond its capacity. This can trip your circuit or even damage the appliance. The worst-case scenario could be a silent burnout of your internal wiring. The cost of replacing a socket or appliance is one thing, but the cost of electrical damage or fire is way more. 4. Appliances May Not Perform Properly When you plug an appliance into an underpowered extension cord, it may not receive the voltage it requires to function properly. That means your mixer might not grind as smoothly, or your kettle might shut off midway. Poor voltage supply over time can also reduce the lifespan of the appliance. So, while you might save a few steps by using an extension cord, you are cutting down your device's efficiency. 5. Safety Manuals Advise Against It Even electrical safety guidelines and electricians will tell you that heavy-duty appliances should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet. Not only is this safer, but it also ensures the appliance works as it is supposed to. In fact, most appliance manuals have clear warnings against using extensions. Some brands even revoke the warranty if the damage is caused by improper power connections. What You Should Do Instead 1. Install more sockets in kitchen spots, especially the ones with proper grounding and load-bearing capacity. 2. Use only high-quality surge protectors if you are using an extension cord temporarily. But make sure never to use them for reheating appliances. 3. Avoid plugging one extension cord into another, as this increases the risk of catching fire. 4. Keep heavy appliances like microwaves, induction cooktops, and air fryers directly connected to wall sockets.

Honey buzzard dares where angels would fear
1 2 3 Chandigarh: The Rock Honey bee (Apis dorsata) deploys formidable air defences by virtue of its massed stings. When the bee stings as a last resort, it is a kamikaze act because it dies due to internal bleeding. But two renowned creatures of the Indian wilderness, the Oriental Honey buzzard (OHB) and the Sloth bear, penetrate hives with an impunity, scarcely bothered about the stings or unnerved, as lesser mortals would be, by the attendant swarming and buzz that reaches a terrifying crescendo. The buzzard does not even spare the nests of hornets and wasps, which are devoid of honey, but contain the larvae that the carnivorous buzzard relishes. At the iconic Sukhna Lake, the life of the OHB (Pernis ptilorhynchus ruficolilis) got showcased in just a few minutes. And, a White-throated kingfisher took an opportunistic swipe in the wake of the buzzard's tumultuous hunt of the ferocious insects. ""While photographing kingfishers at the lake, a sudden burst of alarm calls from mynas, babblers and other small birds drew my attention. I followed the commotion and there it was, a buzzard. Harassed, heckled and mobbed in mid-air by the smaller birds, the buzzard flew from tree to tree, but seemingly not too bothered by the chaos. After all, if the buzzard can take on bees, wasps and hornets what are small birds to get so nervous about? Eventually, the buzzard landed on a branch, eyes fixed on a hive of Yellow Paper wasps. The buzzard lunged at the hive and sent the wasps scattering. Amid the frenzy, an observant kingfisher seized the moment and like a good opportunistic hunter snatched one of the disoriented wasps in mid-air — a lucky, quick snack had come its way amidst the buzzard drama. Meanwhile, with the wasp comb clenched tightly in its talons, the buzzard flew off to relish its meal in peace to a perch hidden among the leafy boughs," Anuj Jain, a Chandigarh-based, award-winning wildlife photographer, told the TOI. Sloth bears sport thick, matted hair to ward off insect stings and possess a slew of other adaptations to get to termite mounds and concealed hives. The buzzard, too, is an accomplished evolutionary hunter and has been witnessed feeding on the larvae, pupae and adults of bees in frontal attacks. Buzzards cling onto the hive and tear off the outer defences to get to the chambers bearing the larvae. Or, they take a swoop at the hive and make off with a chunk by ripping it off with their talons. They also indulge in wing-flapping and whistling calls at the hive to rattle the bees and get them to scatter in sheer panic. Buzzards can set upon one hive in multiple numbers, adding to the destruction. Though they are named 'Honey buzzards', these raptors predominantly feed on larvae and also take other prey such as small rodents, young birds, frogs, lizards, grasshoppers and termites. Stomach and crop contents of buzzards have turned up considerable quantities of wax from hives. Buzzards wield a pair of deceptively-charming eyes, with the irises ranging from a rosy golden yellow to orange-red tints. Buzzards also cause collateral damage when they disturb bee hives. The infuriated bees set upon nearby humans such as golfers who do not realise who the agent provocateur actually was! On the 2nd hole green of the iconic Chandigarh Golf Club, a few years back, a golfer concentrating on his putt was set upon by bees. Whereas his playing mates and caddies were able to lie down and escape the bees, an ailment prevented the golfer from doing so and he was stung badly, and later hospitalised. The caddies reported that a `cheel' (buzzard) had set upon a massive beehive on a tree just opposite the green on the Sukhna lake's embankment. This bird was busy clawing away at the hive. The disturbed bees flew hither and thither because they could not do much damage to their arch foe as nature has protected the buzzard with specialised adaptations. Similarly, a flabbergasted maid in a posh Sector 4 bungalow of Chandigarh watched wide-eyed as a buzzard made repeated attacks on a bee hive in the mango tree and came out unscathed. What kind of a bird was this, the maid had wondered? While attacking hives hanging from lofty trees in Chandigarh's parks, buzzards have set off bee attacks on "love birds cooing" on the benches below, leading to much consternation in the youngsters but palpable relief in the middle-aged moralists disgusted at unseemly public demonstrations of Valentine's ardour round the year! For the moral army, the buzzard was a proverbial god-sent as young couples fled with shrieks replacing the earlier courtship twitter.
