Eleven killed as SUV falls into canal in UP's Gonda; CM Yogi condoles deaths
Gonda: An SUV fell into the Saryu canal in the district on Sunday, leaving 11 people dead and four others injured, police said. Station House Officer (SHO), Itiathok police station, Krishn Gopal Rai, said the victims were going from Sihagaon village to offer holy water at the Prithvinath Temple in Khargupur when the accident occurred near Belwa Bahuta.
Rai said the SUV was carrying 15 people, including the driver. With the help of villagers and rescue teams, 11 bodies were recovered from the submerged vehicle. The bodies have been sent for postmortem and an investigation into the incident has been initiated, officials added.
Superintendent of Police, Vineet Jaiswal said those killed included six women, two men and three children.
The victims were identified as Beena (35), Kajal (22), Mehak (12), Durgesh, Nandini, Ankit, Shubh, Sanju Verma, Anju, Anasuya and Saumya. The SP said four people, including the SUV driver, were rescued and sent to a hospital.
Rahul Verma, a resident of Itiyathok and an eyewitness to the accident, said the road was slippery due to rain in the morning. The SUV was running on the road built next to the canal and when the driver applied the brakes it slipped and fell into the canal, he said.
'We immediately called the police and villagers to the spot and pulled out the SUV with the help of a rope,' he said. A teenage girl, who survived the accident, said, 'We were all going to visit Prithvinath temple. At the time of the incident, the women and girls were singing 'bhajans''.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the loss of lives in the accident and announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased.

Visakhapatnam police lay down safety, eco-friendly norms for Vinayaka Chaviti pandals
With just two weeks to go for Vinayaka Chaviti, the city police convened a meeting with Ganesh pandal organising committees to outline guidelines for idol installation and safety protocols during the festivities. Commissioner of Police Shankabrata Bagchi urged organisers to prioritise eco-friendly clay idols and instructed police personnel to hold awareness programmes in educational institutions to discourage the use of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols. He directed that each pandal must have at least three volunteers on duty round the clock, with their contact details shared with the local police station. Organisers were told to ensure proper barricading, lighting, public-address systems, backup generators, orderly queue management, adequate parking facilities, and multiple entry and exit points at procession and immersion sites. No inflammable materials should be stored near pandals, and water and sand must be kept ready at all times as fire safety measures. Mr. Bagchi stressed that pandals should not inconvenience the public and must be set up on only one side of the road to avoid traffic disruptions. DJ systems are strictly banned at pandals and processions. Organisers must install CCTV cameras with 24x7 recording and monitoring. Forced donations, lucky dips, and lotteries remain prohibited. Idol immersions are permitted only at officially designated locations, and firecrackers are banned during immersion processions. Loudspeakers and microphones must adhere to prescribed decibel limits and are prohibited between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. As in previous years, the city police will soon launch a dedicated website for pandal organisers to apply for permissions. Meanwhile, idol makers have been working for months to prepare thousands of idols. The district sees an average of 3,000 to 4,000 installations each year, and this time will feature some unique creations — including, for the first time, a Ganesh idol adorned with one lakh sarees at Lanka Grounds in Gajuwaka.

CM flying squad seizes 8.5 quintals of adulterated mawa in Hisar
1 2 Hisar: The chief minister's flying squad on Sunday morning raided two houses in Dhani Shyam Lal, exposing an illegal operation of producing adulterated mawa (khoya). The team recovered 8.5 quintals of contaminated mawa stored in unhygienic conditions. The adulterated product, purchased from Rajasthan at Rs 130 per kg, was being sold in Hisar for Rs 180 per kg. During the raid, officials apprehended Mahavir Singh, a resident of Kawalsar village in Rajasthan's Churu district. In his presence, 675 kg of mawa was seized, much of it stored in dirty, foul-smelling water inside freezers. Mahavir admitted that the mawa was fake and regularly supplied to prominent sweet shops in Hisar, including all outlets of Bikaner Sweets, as well as shops in Barwala and Uklana. Investigators revealed that around Rakshabandhan and Teej, approximately 35 quintals of such adulterated mawa were supplied from this facility. While market rates for genuine mawa stood at Rs 500 per kg, the adulterated version was sold to shops for just Rs 150 per kg. The CM's flying squad, led by Hisar Range in-charge Sunaina, along with food safety officer Dr Pawan Chahal, ASI Surendra, HC Vijay, SI Krishna Kumar, HC Surendra, Anoop, and Manoj, collected six samples for laboratory testing.
