KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) today underscored the importance of the 46th ASEAN Summit as a key milestone in advancing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which aims to shape a resilient, innovative, and people-centred regional bloc.
The meeting was chaired by the Foreign Ministry Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here.
According to Wisma Putra, it was convened in preparation for the 46th ASEAN Summit, the 2nd ASEAN- Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, which will be held on May 26 to 27.
'The Meeting also recognised the upcoming ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-GCC-China Summits as critical platforms to enhance ASEAN's external partnerships, particularly in the areas of energy, trade, investment, and sustainable development,' it said in a Facebook post today.
Wisma Putra added that ASEAN SOM leaders, together with the SOM leader of Timor-Leste, also exchanged views on regional developments and matters of mutual interest.
According to Wisma Putra, key topics included ASEAN Community building, implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, ASEAN's external relations, Timor-Leste's progress towards full ASEAN membership, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
The 46th ASEAN Summit is being held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship theme, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
This year also marks the country's fifth time at the helm of the regional bloc, following previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
The ASEAN Summit and its related meetings are expected to address a wide range of pressing regional and global issues, with the situation in Myanmar remaining a critical topic of concern for ASEAN member states.

KUCHING (June 12): The federal government's proposal to return regulatory powers over tourism-related transport to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) is a step in the right direction, said Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. He stressed that the issue is not merely about reallocating responsibility, but about ensuring a coordinated and effective enforcement framework. 'I know it's not easy, because this relates to JPJ (Road Transport Department), technology platforms, enforcement and many agencies are involved but coming up with ideas is one thing. Making sure they work is another,' said Abdul Karim. Citing media reports, he pointed out that the bus driver involved in the crash had 18 outstanding traffic summonses, and the vehicle had more than 20. 'That means something is wrong. So, if there is any entity, be it a ministry or any other body, that can address this problem and make the system better, of course we will support it,' he said. In the aftermath of the crash, Motac renewed its call to regain regulatory authority over tourism vehicles, arguing that the current system, overseen by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), lacks a comprehensive safety framework. The ministry said that the earlier transfer of regulatory powers away from Motac created a void in oversight, weakening Malaysia's transport safety assurance mechanisms, particularly as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. The incident has reportedly raised concerns among international stakeholders involved in tourism and student exchange programmes across Asean, the Middle East, China, Japan, and South Korea, potentially affecting Malaysia's image as a safe travel destination.

China affirms trade deal with US, says it ‘always keeps its word and delivers results'
BEIJING, June 12 — China today affirmed a trade deal announced by US President Donald Trump, saying both sides needed to abide by the consensus and adding China always kept its word. The deal, reached after Trump and China's President Xi Jinping spoke on the telephone last week, brings a delicate truce in a trade war between the world's two largest economies. 'China has always kept its word and delivered results,' Lin Jian, a foreign ministry spokesperson, said at a regular news conference. 'Now that a consensus has been reached, both sides should abide by it.' The Trump-Xi telephone call broke a standoff that had flared just weeks after a preliminary deal was reached in Geneva. The call was quickly followed by more talks in London that Washington said had put 'meat on the bones' of the Geneva agreement to ease bilateral retaliatory tariffs. The Geneva deal had faltered over China's continued curbs on minerals exports, prompting the Trump administration to respond with export controls preventing shipments of semiconductor design software, jet engines for Chinese-made planes and other goods to China. Trump yesterday said he was very happy with the trade deal. 'Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me,' Trump said on Truth Social. 'Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China. M'sia secures RM90bil approved investments in 1Q

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has secured RM89.8bil in approved investments for the first quarter of financial year 2025 (1Q25), a steady 3.7% year-on-year increase despite a challenging global economic backdrop. In a statement yesterday, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) said these investments, spread across 1,556 projects in manufacturing, services, and primary sectors, are set to generate over 33,300 new employment opportunities for Malaysians. 'The results reflect continued investor confidence in the country's clear policies and long-term fundamentals, bucking the trend of cautious international capital flows due to geopolitical and macroeconomic volatility, and the intensifying global competition for fresh investments. 'Foreign investments dominated the investment landscape, contributing RM60.4bil or 67.3% of total investments, while domestic investments accounted for RM29.4bil or 32.7%,' it said. Besides job creation, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz said the increase in the Managerial, Technical, and Supervisory index to 46.3% from 44.2% in the same quarter last year reflects the country's success in creating higher-skilled, better-paying jobs. 'With a better integrated Asean economy, which we are working hard on as Asean chair, we are also paving the way for Malaysia's continued positioning as a manufacturing and services hub to this fast-growing 680-million strong region,' he said. He said the investment environment in 2025 is expected to remain challenging due to continued geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds from the US-China trade war. 'Nonetheless, although major markets' protectionist policies and supply chain frictions continue to weigh in on companies' investment decisions, Malaysia's clear policies should be able to attract more investments from Asia's growing economy, which is expected to expand to about 42% of global gross domestic product by 2040,' he said. Besides bringing in good jobs and business opportunities, Mida chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the projects secured by Mida for 1Q25 supported the national effort to build a more diversified and resilient economy.
