A-list comedian Shane Gillis returning to host 'SNL' for second time since being fired from sketch show

Stand-up comedy phenom Shane Gillis is in such high demand that the famous sketch comedy show that fired him is bringing him back to host for a second time.
NBC announced on Tuesday that Gillis would be the celebrity host for "Saturday Night Live" on March 1. The episode will also feature musical guest Tate McRae.
Gillis previously hosted the long-running comedy show in February 2024 – a testament to the comic's meteoric rise on the scene despite him getting fired from "SNL" in 2019 after past racially charged comments he made on a podcast resurfaced.
"SNL" creator Lorne Michaels said he was "not aware" of Gillis' past remarks when casting him on the show in 2019, describing them as "offensive, hurtful and unacceptable."
During the opening monologue of his "SNL" appearance a year ago, Gillis joked about the controversy. "Yeah, I'm here," he said, telling the audience that many of them probably didn't know who he was. "I was fired from this show a while ago, but don't look that up, please."
He continued, "If you don't know who I am, please don't Google that. It's fine. Don't even worry about it."
Gillis' "SNL" firing has not seemed to hamper his comedy career, which so far has seen him top the streaming charts and break touring records.
His Netflix special, "Beautiful Dogs," reached the platform's Top 10 list in five countries, spending two weeks in the U.S. Top 10. His 2024 arena tour also broke multiple industry records, setting a record for most tickets ever sold for a live event at Toronto's famous Scotiabank Arena, as well as becoming the most well-attended comedy event in the history of Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center.
More recently, the comic starred alongside musician Post Malone and NFL legend Peyton Manning in Bud Light's 2025 Super Bowl ad. According to YouTube, the star-powered Bud Light ad had the sixth most gameday views among global audiences this year. USA Today's AdMeter also revealed it was one of Bud Light's most successful ad campaigns in the company's history.
Gillis' scripted comedy series "Tires" is also returning for a second season on Netflix later this year. The show, which had its first season debut in Netflix's Top 10, boasts a cast of other comedy legends, including Jon Lovitz, Vince Vaughn, and Ron White.
In addition to his Netflix success, Gillis co-hosts "Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast," alongside comedian Matt McCusker. The show is the No. 1 Patreon podcast in the world, and boasts over 5.5 million downloads each month.
The comic is currently on his international "Shane Gillis Live" standup tour. Upcoming stops include Washington, D.C., Salt Lake City, and the UK.

"This year, more people in the U.S. watched YouTube on TVs than on mobile devices - a first," he continued. "YouTube is now the No. 1 distributor of TV content, according to Nielsen. And for the past three months, YouTube registered the largest share of TV viewing (12%) among media companies; Netflix accounted for 7.5%." His Markets podcast co-host Ed Elson notes that Gen Z sees YouTube - owned by Alphabet (GOOGL) - as an algorithm-driven force shifting influence away from established brands and toward individual creators. The biggest disruptor to Hollywood, Galloway argues, isn't Netflix chairman's Reed Hastings - it's MrBeast, the YouTube star who has perfected parasocial relationships. In 2023 alone, MrBeast amassed over a billion hours of watch time, surpassing the top Netflix shows. "But just as individual content creators disrupted Hollywood, AI may disrupt content creators," Galloway wrote. While Netflix is expected to invest around $18 billion in content this year, YouTube effectively operates with a content budget of zero, instead sharing ad revenue with its creators. MrBeast has revealed that producing a single video typically costs him $2.5 million. Yet in a striking shift, an AI-generated muzak channel recently surpassed him, becoming the fastest-growing channel on YouTube this month. In 1983, the final episode of M.A.S.H. was a national event, drawing 106 million viewers - nearly half of America, he recalls. By contrast, last year's most-watched scripted TV finale, "Yellowstone," reached just 13 million people, a mere 4% of the country. The shift from scheduled programming to unlimited, on-demand content has fragmented American culture, Galloway suggests - and this fact reflects the loss of two key societal pillars: collective experiences and a shared identity. "Without shared stories, we don't laugh together, love/hate the same heroes/villains, or believe in the same facts when we argue," Galloway wrote. "We lose our empathy, our ability to see each other as human." "It's hard to demonize someone you watched 'Cheers' with every Thursday night; it's easy to hate someone whose cultural references are completely foreign to your feed." The historical romance series 'Bridgerton,' based on Julia Quinn's novels, has already been renewed for seasons five and six, despite season 4 not releasing until next year. Donna and Jason will be joined by a number of reality TV stars from other programs along with a group of celebrities including Michael Rapoport and Tara Lipinksi. "The Traitors" splits contestants up into two categories of "Faithfuls" and "Traitors." The cast must decipher which among them are the "Traitors," picking a player each night to "murder." While Donna and Jason embark on this exciting new venture, Travis remains at home preparing for his final season. The next step on that journey comes next week when the Chiefs get started with their mandatory minicamp on June 17.
