Serbian PM calls trade deal a ‘new page' in Egypt ties
Egypt - Serbian Prime Minister Guro Macut has described a new free trade agreement with Egypt as a 'new page' in bilateral relations, stating that both countries are working to implement its terms to boost trade and investment.
Speaking at the Egyptian-Serbian Business Forum in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, Macut said the agreement aims to 'achieve the optimal exploitation of possible opportunities to increase trade exchange and push investments' for the economic growth of both nations.
He said the efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation have become tangible thanks to the support of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, which paves the way for stronger ties.
Macut highlighted the long-standing ties between the two nations, which he noted were founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement and are celebrating 117 years of diplomatic relations. He said the strategic partnership was established during Sisi's 2022 visit to Belgrade and reaffirmed when the draft free trade deal was signed during Vučić's visit to Cairo in July 2024.
While noting that economic exchange currently stands at approximately $122m, the prime minister asserted that there is potential to increase it significantly. He added that around 40 Egyptian-owned companies operate in Serbia and that joint manufacturing projects have already begun in the Egyptian market.
He presented Serbia as an economically stable and safe investment destination, citing its strategic geographical location, government support, skilled workforce, and attractiveness for the software industry. Macut also mentioned Serbia's efforts to advance the 'Open Balkan' initiative to create a common market for the free movement of goods in the Western Balkans.
Macut extended a specific invitation for Egyptian participation in the Belgrade Expo 2027, encouraging a large number of investors to attend to explore cooperation opportunities and create a platform to enhance trade. He also expressed hope that Serbian companies and products would find their place in the Egyptian market.
'We look forward to a new partnership and more cooperation,' he concluded.

Orascom Construction expected to record high profits in 2025-2029
Egypt's Orascom Construction Company is expected to record high profits over the coming five years, buoyed by project upturn in Egypt and the Gulf oil producers, an Egyptian investment research firm said on Wednesday. An increase in public and private project investment in Egypt will give a strong push to Orascom Construction, which is also targeting projects in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), HC Securities and Investment said. In a report released by HC's analyst Nisreen Mamdouh, the company said:'We expect construction spending in Egypt to be strong, especially on infrastructure and projects which have nearly completed, mainly transport, water and power.' The report added:'Our outlook for private local and foreign investment in Egypt remains positive, especially in mega projects in renewable energy and industry.' The report projected an 11 percent annual growth in Orascom profits during 2025-2025 and that projects executed by the Company would reach nearly $8 billion during that period, with an average annual value of new projects of around $4.16 billion. 'We expect an acceleration in project execution, which will boost its total revenues by around 5.4 percent annually during that period,' the report said. On Tuesday, Egypt's parliament endorsed an investment plan during the 2025-2026 fiscal year, which starts on 1 July and targets public investments of around 1.16 trillion Egyptian pounds ($2.3 billion), nearly 37 percent of the total targeted investments. Jordan: ABMC says it maintains steady passenger service maintained despite flight disruptions
AMMAN — Arab Bridge Maritime Company (ABMC) has said that it continues to provide 'safe and reliable' services for travellers on its Aqaba-Nuweiba maritime route, despite increased regional disruptions to air travel. The Amman-based company said in a statement that it has maintained regular daily trips between Jordan and Egypt and recently added extra sailings to accommodate growing demand following the cancellation or postponement of many airline flights, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. ABMC General Manager Adnan Abadleh told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that the company, which operates both the Aqaba-Nuweiba route, a two-and-a-half hour journey, and the shorter Aqaba-Taba tourist route, has become a vital link between the two countries during the current period of instability. 'In light of widespread flight cancellations and diversions due to the recent regional escalation, many travellers, particularly tourist groups, have been unable to complete their itineraries or return home,' Abadleh said. 'Arab Bridge has proven to be a safe and dependable alternative for reaching final destinations.' He also said that passengers using ABMC services can continue their journeys to international destinations via Sharm el Sheikh and Cairo airports. The company also said it is facilitating travel for Iraqi and Syrian passengers arriving from Egypt, whose flights to Baghdad and Damascus were cancelled, by enabling passage through the Nuweiba-Aqaba route, pending official approvals. Abadleh said more than 10,000 passengers were transported over the past three days alone, underscoring the company's adherence to maritime safety protocols and its commitment to offering secure and accessible transport. He added that travellers can book tickets either online or through ABMC offices in Jordan and Egypt, noting that the company offers competitive pricing, making sea travel a safe and economical alternative amid ongoing air travel uncertainty. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Wary of global tensions, Zimbabwe holds interest rates at 35%
Zimbabwe, wary of a rise in global tensions, resolved to leave its bank policy rate unchanged at 35%, according to John Mushayavanhu, the central bank governor. 'The MPC noted the broad-based deceleration of global growth occasioned by escalating trade tensions, geo-economic fragmentation, regional and international conflicts and policy uncertainty,' Mushayavanhu said in a statement Monday after a surprise meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee. 'Considering the challenging and rapidly evolving risks to the global growth outlook, the MPC advised the Reserve Bank to maintain a sufficiently tight monetary policy stance.' The central bank was set to hold a rate setting meeting only later this month on June 27, according to a schedule available on its website. Despite, the current uncertain global environment, the bank said it still sees 6% growth in the domestic economy as achievable this year. The strong performance of agriculture is expected to help spur the expansion after improved output from key crops including corn, tobacco and cotton. 'Other sectors are also expected to record positive growth performance, benefiting from the prevailing price and exchange rate stability,' Mushayavanhu added. The southern African nation has kept rates unchanged since it lifted them last September in response to a sharp devaluation of its gold-backed currency, the ZiG. Businesses have repeatedly asked the central bank to reconsider its tight monetary policy stance, which is causing a severe liquidity crunch in the economy. The bank maintains that its policy has helped stabilize the ZiG, short for Zimbabwe Gold, and is seeing increased usage in the economy. It is now used in 43% of transactions in the economy up from 26% last April, according to the governor. The foreign currency reserves backing the ZiG stood at $701 million as of last Friday. The International Monetary Fund last week also voiced support for the ZiG to become the sole currency in the economy. The ZiG is the nation's sixth attempt at establishing a functioning local currency since 2009. © Copyright The Zimbabwean. All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (
