UFC 317 results: Payton Talbott upsets Felipe Lima in bounce-back victory

USA Today11 hours ago

Payton Talbott has bounced back.
One of the UFC's fastest-rising stars in terms of popularity, Talbott (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) successfully rebounded Saturday at UFC 317 when he upset former OKTAGON champion Felipe Lima (14-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) with a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) victory.
The bantamweight bout kicked off the UFC 317 main card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
A scrambly opening five minutes saw Lima take Talbott to the canvas multiple times and even take his back at one point. But Talbott stayed composed and utilized his aggressive striking Round 2, during which he mounted Lima though could not finish. In Round 3, Talbott overcame some Lima success early to outbattle the Brazilian late in the fight – and subsequently get the nod from all three judges.
Talbott, 26, turned heads for his flashy fighting style and unique personality coming out of Dana White's Contender Series in 2023. Following wins over Nick Aguirre, Cameron Saaiman, and Yanis Ghemmouri, Talbott lost for the first time as a pro vs. Raoni Barcelos in January.
Lima, 27, loses for the first time since his pro debut in August 2015. Lima defeated Muhammad Naimov and Miles Johns in the UFC prior to Saturday's fight.

Paddy Pimblett intends to 'disfigure' Ilia Topuria in UFC title fight: 'I hate him'

Paddy Pimblett thinks a title fight with Ilia Topuria would rival the biggest grudge matches in UFC history. After Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) knocked out Charles Oliveira in Saturday's UFC 317 headliner to become new lightweight champion, Pimblett (23-3 MMA, 7-0 UFC) entered the octagon for a tense staredown that ended with Topuria pushing away "The Baddy." UFC CEO Dana White said post-fight that he didn't approve of the faceoff and would not commit to Pimblett challenging for the belt next, but Topuria was insistent that he has a score to settle with Pimblett that dates back several years to a fight week encounter in London. Pimblett expect that he will get the next shot, and he said the bad blood with Pimblett is as real as it gets, comparing it to perhaps the most infamous rivalry in MMA history between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. "You don't even need to sell that fight – it sells itself," Pimblett said on ESPN's UFC 317 post-fight show. "Two people who genuinely dislike each other. We don't really get that. We haven't seen that since Khabib and McGregor, two people who actually hate each other. Because I hate him. I wouldn't want to finish him fast, I would want to finish him with a minute left in the fight after I've elbowed him 700 times. I'd want to disfigure him." Pimblett said he thrives off tension with an opponent, and thinks not only that heat with Topuria would bring out the best of him, but also the fact he would likely enter the octagon as a significant betting underdog. "I'm more motivated when I'm like that, especially the fact that everyone thinks I'll lose," Pimblett said. "Everyone thinks I'll lose. Nine out of 10 people probably think he'll knock me out. I love proving people wrong. It just gives me this warm, fuzzy feeling inside making people eat their own words. "I cannot wait. I can't be booked with anyone else now. It's a simple as that. I am fighting him next and I am going to take his little head off for him."

Transfer news, rumors: Guehi to Liverpool, Joao Pedro to Chelsea

Certain Premier League clubs have gone big already with their summer spending and there is no sign of their activity slowing down. MORE — List of Premier League confirmed ins and outs for summer 2025 Below we look at a few of the latest pieces of transfer news from around the Premier League. If the price is right Guehi to Liverpool makes perfect sense A report from the Daily Mirror states that Marc Guehi is closing in on a move to Liverpool. The Crystal Palace captain has just one year left on his contract and the England international was chased by Newcastle United last summer. It looks like Guehi, 24, will be available for a pretty decent transfer fee this summer as Tottenham Hotspur and now Liverpool want to sign the talented center back. Guehi would be a perfect upgrade to Liverpool's center back options. And with Jarell Quansah heading to Bayer Leverkusen and talks stalling with Ibrahima Konate over a new contract, Liverpool need a new long-term center back. Guehi on a cut-price deal would be phenomenal business and with less than a year left on his contract Liverpool should be able to get him for less than $45 million. Palace always drive a hard bargain but they're in a tough spot with Guehi's contract running down. After signing Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz already this summer, Liverpool are building an incredibly strong squad and the reigning Premier League champions are not messing around. Joao Pedro to Chelsea talks 'intensifying' A report from Fabrizio Romano says that Newcastle have had bids rejected for Brighton's Joao Pedro, believed to be in the region of $70 million, and now Chelsea have 'intensified talks' to sign the Brazilian striker. Chelsea have already added Liam Delap to their forward options this summer and have Nicolas Jackson around too. But Jackson could soon be their third-choice center forward if Joao Pedro arrives. The Brighton forward has been extremely consistent in recent seasons and is exactly the kind of mobile, fluid, versatile forward that Enzo Maresca wants at Chelsea. Joao Pedro is ready for the step up to one of the Premier League's big boys and Chelsea seems like a very good fit, although he will have to battle for playing time. Still just 23 years old, he is the kind of character who will thrive on the challenge of establishing himself at a top club. Cole Palmer may also have some competition for penalty kicks if Joao Pedro does arrive at Stamford Bridge...

Bayern Munich and Flamengo will do battle on Sunday afternoon for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Bayern entered the tournament as one of the favorites to lift the trophy, but now finds itself in a tough section of the draw after failing to win Group C because of a loss to Benfica in their last match. Flamengo has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the tournament, winning Group D ahead of Chelsea. Bayern is a -325 favorite to advance, and is -170 to win the match in regulation. FIFA Club World Cup: Bayern Munich vs. Flamengo betting preview Although Bayern was disappointing in their defeat against Benfica, they were not done any favors by their schedule. Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich waves to supporters. FC Bayern via Getty Images The Bavarians smoked Auckland City, 10-0, in their opening match, and then defeated Boca Juniors, 2-1, to automatically qualify for the Round of 16. That took a lot of the sting out of their match with Benfica, who needed a result to guarantee passage. Nonetheless, Bayern was expected to win and came up short. A similar effort against Flamengo will be punished, as the Brazilians have been outstanding in this tournament and in Brazil's Serie A this season. Flamengo's defensive prowess has been on full display, conceding just two total goals in the group stage against Chelsea, LAFC, and ES Tunis, which was considered one of the toughest groups in the competition. FIFA Club World Cup: Bayern Munich vs. Flamengo pick Bayern is on another level, talent-wise, compared to Flamengo, but FIlipe Luis has the Brazilian side in impeccable form. They'll be happy to defend and force Die Roten to break them down, hoping to hit the Germans on the counterattack and punish any mistakes. It's a formula that has worked for Flamengo in Brazil and in the group stage, but will be a lot tougher to pull off against one of the best clubs in the world. Nonetheless, I think Flamengo can make a real go of this, and will keep things tight for much of the match.
