Brampton mayor ‘cautiously optimistic' about Bishnoi gang terrorist designation
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown says he's 'cautiously optimistic' about the chances of India's Lawrence Bishnoi gang being designated as a terrorist group after meeting with the public safety minister Wednesday night.
Brown says that he and Peel region police officials met with Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree in Ottawa to discuss the 'scourge' of extortion and murders linked to the gang.

RCMP have alleged Indian diplomats shared information about Sikh separatists in Canada with the Indian government and that top Indian officials then passed the information to the Bishnoi gang.
Brown says that the gang has become more brazen in Brampton and local police have spotted vehicles with Bishnoi-affiliated decals.
Anandasangaree said Wednesday morning that national security officials 'continuously' review whether criminal organizations meet the legal threshold to be named as a terrorist group.

BC Premier David Eby sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this week asking that the Bishnoi gang be designated as a terrorist organization, as the government did with seven other transnational criminal organizations earlier this year.

The girl was allegedly abandoned near Casselman, Ont., on Sunday afternoon and was spotted four days later by an Ontario Provincial Police drone along Highway 417 about 50 kilometres west of the Quebec boundary. Father, son facing terrorism charges in alleged Toronto plot to stand trial in 2026
A father and son accused of planning an ISIS-inspired mass murder in Toronto have been ordered to stand trial next year. Lawyers for Ahmed and Mostafa Eldidi appeared in Superior Court in Newmarket, Ont., this morning. The court scheduled a six-week jury trial, to begin Sept. 8, 2026. The RCMP said the accused were "in the advanced stages of planning a serious, violent attack" when the men were arrested with an axe and a machete in a Richmond Hill hotel in July 2024. Ahmed Eldidi and his son Mostafa 27, both face a charge of conspiracy to commit murder, as well as terrorism offences. Ahmed Eldidi, 63, separately faces war crimes charges in connection with an ISIS propaganda video showing a man dismembering a prisoner in 2015. A separate trial on those charges, expected to last roughly five weeks, has been scheduled for Nov. 9, 2026. The RCMP said it marked the first national security investigation where war crimes charges have been laid in Canada. Lawyers for both Eldidis are scheduled to return to court on June 27 at 9 am. Both accused remain in custody.

Killer at large after double homicide in Lake Winnipeg cottage country: RCMP
Social Sharing Two people are dead and the killer is on the run after a double homicide in Manitoba cottage country, RCMP say. Police received reports of gunshots on Hampton Road in the Sandy Bay cottage area of the rural municipality of Victoria Beach, about 100 kilometres north of Winnipeg, around 2 a.m. on Friday, they said. Officers found a Winnipeg man, 29, and a Victoria Beach woman, 41, dead. Police believe the killer took off from the scene in a white truck and travelled down Highway 59 before officers arrived. The shooting doesn't appear to be random, RCMP said. They also said they know the incident will worry people in the small community on the southeast shore of Lake Winnipeg. "We want to reassure residents, as well as cottagers who may be heading up to that area this weekend, that these murders appear to be targeted, and at this time, we believe risk to public safety is low," RCMP Sgt. Evan Willcock with Manitoba RCMP major crime services said in a news release Friday morning. RCMP are expected to hold a news conference at 1:15 p.m. CT.
