Kottayam: A major tragedy was averted after an old, dilapidated, unused building of govt higher secondary school collapsed at Kadammanitta in Pathanamthitta district on Thursday night.
The around 80-year-old building with tiled roof came down during heavy rain. It had been unused as it was in a dangerous condition for the last three years. Two rooms were completely destroyed in the collapse. Village, police and education department officials arrived at the spot following the incident.
Around 400 students are studying in the school and the building had classrooms functioning until 2002. Since the building was unfit, teachers had warned students not to go near it.
Students, who used to play in the nearby ground, would resort to this building for rest during the day.
During chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan's Nava Kerala Sadas in 2023, locals had submitted an application for constructing a mini stadium there after demolishing the old building. According to headmistress R Sreelatha, the tendering process for this was in progress.
However, anti-social elements used to camp there at night, according to local residents.

BJP seeks strong law to protect women from forced conversions in Kerala

KOCHI: Alleging the involvement of anti-national forces behind the death of a 23-year-old woman in Kothamangalam, the BJP has demanded that the state government bring in a piece of legislation against love jihad. 'If the government is apprehensive about the term 'love jihad', they can change it. But we want strong legislation to protect women who are cheated in the name of love and then tortured to convert to Islam. We cannot tolerate such activities,' said BJP state vice-president Shone George. 'The Kothamangalam woman was taken to Panayikulam, where she was locked up in a room and tortured demanding to convert. The police say they cannot use the term love jihad because it has not been defined in legal terminology. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan have not spoken a word against such moves. By refusing to oppose love jihad, the government is supporting these activities. Panayikulam, where the girl was tortured, is notorious for anti-national activities. It was the location of a SIMI camp in the past. We have appealed to the government to hand over the investigation to a Central agency,' he said. According to him, there were many people other than the relatives of the accused in the house during the torture. Though the parents of the accused were present at the house for three days, the police failed to arrest them. 'Now they are under PFI protection, making it difficult for the police to nab them. In a similar incident, a differently abled girl was tortured in Kollam. The police have not arrested the accused. Those who protested against the nuns' arrest in Chhattisgarh are silent on love jihad,' he said.

Family of woman who died by suicide alleging forced conversion demands NIA probe

Days after a 23-year-old woman in Kerala's Kothamangalam died by suicide after blaming her boyfriend and his family of pressurising her to convert to his faith, her family on Tuesday demanded the probe to be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The deceased's mother has alleged that the local police have booked the accused on 'light' charges and demanded a probe by the central agency into allegations of religious conversion. (File photo) The mother of the deceased ay wrote to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and state police chief Ravada A Chandrasekhar requesting an NIA probe into the case citing her daughter's alleged torture by her boyfriend and his family to convert her to his faith before marrying her. The 23-year-old woman of Christian faith, a TTC (Teacher Training Course) student in Kothamangalam, was found dead at her home on August 9. In a purported suicide note recovered by the police later, she had written about being neglected by her boyfriend Ramees (24) and refusing to marry her. In the note, she also reportedly stated that she was tortured by him and his family at their home when she refused to convert to his faith before marriage. Her brother told the media that even though she was initially in favour of religious conversion, she changed her mind after her father's death in the past year. Ramees was arrested on Monday and booked on charges of abetment to suicide, rape under the pretext of marriage, wrongful confinement and voluntarily causing hurt. The deceased's mother has alleged that the local police have booked the accused on 'light' charges and demanded a probe by the central agency into allegations of religious conversion. A senior police officer told HT on Tuesday that they are still investigating and gathering evidence to determine if the accused and his family attempted to forcibly convert the deceased woman. 'We are still investigating the angle of religious conversion and seeking legal opinion on whether criminal charges can be invoked along those lines,' she said. She also confirmed that the accused Ramees' parents, who were questioned on Tuesday, would be booked for abetment to suicide and other charges. 'They will be arrested soon,' she said. A nine-member special investigation team (SIT) led by Muvattupuzha deputy superintendent of police (DySP) was announced on Tuesday to investigate the case.

Kothamangalam suicide: Woman's family seeks NIA probe, claims she's victim of attempted forced conversion

Kochi: The family of a deceased 23-year-old woman from Kothamangalam, who alleged in her suicide note that her boyfriend compelled her to convert, has demanded a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA). This comes even as Ernakulam rural police have formed a nine-member special investigation team, led by Muvattupuzha DSP, to investigate her death. Her boyfriend, Rameez (24), who was arrested on Monday, is in judicial custody and the investigation team is expected to seek his custody soon. The woman's mother has written to CM Pinarayi Vijayan and state police chief demanding an NIA probe. In the letter, she raised suspicion that her daughter was the victim of an attempted forced conversion by the accused. She alleged that her daughter was confined in the accused's house by him and his family, where she was physically assaulted. She also claimed that the charges invoked by police against Rameez were "not strong". The Kothamangalam police have booked the accused under Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means, etc.) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), after a friend of the deceased corroborated that the accused had slapped her. Police are also trying to track down additional witnesses to record their statements. Police are yet to serve summons to Rameez's parents to question them, amid demands to book them for abetment. Meanwhile, police sources said the autopsy report confirmed hanging as the cause of death and also substantiated charges under Section 69 of BNS. However, the investigation team maintains that, so far, evidence points to a love affair gone sour rather than a concerted effort to convert religion. Police said the duo were batchmates at a college in Aluva and had decided to marry, but Rameez recently backtracked and even blocked her on WhatsApp. The woman was found hanging in her house in Kothamangalam on Saturday. Police recovered a suicide note, presumably written by the victim, containing serious accusations that the accused compelled her to convert and subjected her to cruelty. Meanwhile, the Syro-Malabar Church's media commission took up the issue, claiming in a Facebook post that the "real religious conversion" was happening in Kerala, not in Chhattisgarh. It added that it was unfortunate young women still could not identify religious extremists who exploit pure emotions like love to cheat. The commission also urged political outfits to oppose all practices that go against secularism. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
