Kothamangalam suicide: Woman's family seeks NIA probe, claims she's victim of attempted forced conversion

Time of Indiaa day ago
Kochi: The family of a deceased 23-year-old woman from Kothamangalam, who alleged in her suicide note that her boyfriend compelled her to convert, has demanded a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA).
This comes even as Ernakulam rural police have formed a nine-member special investigation team, led by Muvattupuzha DSP, to investigate her death.
Her boyfriend, Rameez (24), who was arrested on Monday, is in judicial custody and the investigation team is expected to seek his custody soon.
The woman's mother has written to CM Pinarayi Vijayan and state police chief demanding an NIA probe. In the letter, she raised suspicion that her daughter was the victim of an attempted forced conversion by the accused.
She alleged that her daughter was confined in the accused's house by him and his family, where she was physically assaulted. She also claimed that the charges invoked by police against Rameez were "not strong".
The Kothamangalam police have booked the accused under Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means, etc.) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), after a friend of the deceased corroborated that the accused had slapped her.

The possible involvement of more persons, including a friend mentioned in the victim's suicide note, is under investigation. Police are also trying to track down additional witnesses to record their statements. Police are yet to serve summons to Rameez's parents to question them, amid demands to book them for abetment.
Meanwhile, police sources said the autopsy report confirmed hanging as the cause of death and also substantiated charges under Section 69 of BNS.
However, the investigation team maintains that, so far, evidence points to a love affair gone sour rather than a concerted effort to convert religion. Police said the duo were batchmates at a college in Aluva and had decided to marry, but Rameez recently backtracked and even blocked her on WhatsApp.
The woman was found hanging in her house in Kothamangalam on Saturday. Police recovered a suicide note, presumably written by the victim, containing serious accusations that the accused compelled her to convert and subjected her to cruelty.
Meanwhile, the Syro-Malabar Church's media commission took up the issue, claiming in a Facebook post that the "real religious conversion" was happening in Kerala, not in Chhattisgarh. It added that it was unfortunate young women still could not identify religious extremists who exploit pure emotions like love to cheat. The commission also urged political outfits to oppose all practices that go against secularism.

Ex-BHU dept head hires hitman to kill successor

VARANASI: A former department head at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) allegedly hatched a revenge plot, hiring a contract killer to "silence" his successor. Iron rods swung in the dark, leaving Prof Challa Sriramachandra Murthy battered but alive. The "mastermind" is on the run. Telugu department head Murthy is recovering from fractures in both arms after surviving the campus hit job on July 28, allegedly orchestrated by his predecessor Budati Venkatesh Lu. According to Varanasi police, the alleged plot began after Lu lost the department's headship following a complaint from Murthy. The conspiracy surfaced after Tuesday night's arrest of alleged hitman Pramod Kumar alias Ganesh Pasi of Prayagraj - wounded in the leg during a shootout near Dafi in Varanasi. Hours earlier, police had nabbed Bhutpur Bhaskar from Narayanpet district of Telangana - a former research scholar accused of arranging the attackers. Another alleged accomplice, Vedant Bhushan Mishra of Jaunpur, was held earlier. ADCP T Saravanan said Bhaskar admitted he had been in contact with Lu since 2016. Bhaskar told investigators Lu introduced him to Mohammed Qasim Babu, an assistant professor at Kaimur University, who allegedly pushed for revenge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pensioners Can Buy These Electric Cars in Kuala Lumpur - See Prices Here Electric Cars | Search Ads Search Now Undo On July 25, Bhaskar and Qasim flew from Telangana to Varanasi, checked into a hotel, and allegedly called Pramod to hire muscle. After a recce of Murthy's movements, the group ambushed him near Birla Hostel as he rode home on a motorcycle, attacking with iron rods before fleeing. When police closed in Tuesday night, Pramod allegedly opened fire before being hit in the leg. Police seized a firearm, live cartridges, and cash from him. Pramod told investigators he was paid money to kill Murthy, police said. With arrests mounting, Lu vanished, switching off all phones. Manhunts are under way for Lu and the four other suspects - Dubey, Pradyuman Yadav, Vishal Yadav, and Qasim. BHU faculty staged a protest on campus after the attack, demanding justice.

Murder case: SC sets aside bail order, asks wrestler to surrender

New Delhi: Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside the bail granted to Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar in the 2021 murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar at Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. A bench of justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra referred to the FIR's allegations, which described the capital as having become a "criminal playground" for settling scores with no regard for the law. The court directed Kumar to surrender within a week before the concerned trial court. The bench was hearing an appeal filed by Dhankar's father against Delhi High Court's March 4 order granting bail. "Undoubtedly, the accused (Kumar) is a celebrated wrestler and an Olympian, who has represented the nation at the international level. It cannot be doubted that he carries societal impact," the bench observed. However, it noted that his "domineering influence" over witnesses or efforts to delay trial proceedings could not be ruled out. Allegations of pressuring witnesses were raised before the bail order, and certain witnesses had lodged written complaints fearing threats to their lives at Kumar's behest. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eating these 15 Foods Every Day Will Slowly Kill You Undo The bench noted that after the FIR was lodged, Kumar remained absconding and evaded arrest until his eventual arrest on May 23, 2021. "This court must also be cognisant of the seriousness of the allegations against the accused," the bench said. The court noted the accused allegedly abducted persons, violently attacked them with dangerous weapons, causing grievous injuries resulting in Dhankar's death. Prosecution records showed that when Kumar was granted temporary bail on five occasions, prosecution witnesses often turned hostile. "However, at this stage we refrain from affirming seal of approval thereupon. But pertinently, this pattern underscores the possibility of interference into the trial by the accused. Noticeably, out of 35 witnesses examined, 28 have turned hostile," the bench pointed out. The top court emphasised that bail is a discretionary remedy requiring careful balancing of legal and societal interests — upholding personal liberty on one side and considering the gravity of the offence and the trial's integrity on the other. pti Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Police on toes for tonight's protest & I-Day celebrations

1 2 Kolkata: The city police will deploy close to 5,000 officers to secure the area and ensure smooth movement of citizens between Aug 14 and the afternoon of Aug 15, given the host of activities planned during those 36 hours. This will mean a significant presence of officers, especially at all the "Reclaim The Night" programmes on Aug 14, similar to their presence at the Independence Day celebration events where chief minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to attend the same evening. About 2,000 of the 5,000 cops will guard the main programme zone and its approaches The main deployment will be at the Red Road-Kidderpore Road programme on the morning of Aug 15 when the Tricolour will be unfurled by Banerjee. "With Operation Sindoor held this year, we are not taking any chances with security," said an officer. Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma, while inspecting Red Road on Wednesday, said: "We are ensuring proper and adequate security." From the night of Aug 14, important roads will undergo checkpoint inspections. Additional surveillance will be in place at metro stations as well," Verma added. With repeated instances of molestation and harassment of protesters, especially at the last two "Reclaim The Night" protests, Lalbazar has issued a list of dos and don'ts for the various citizens' protests lined up on that day. "Elaborate police arrangements for Thursday and Friday will be made for all planned rallies called by multiple groups, along with the official programmes. We are instructing officers not to indulge in any altercation and to swing into action whenever any complaint from woman protesters reaches them, irrespective of whether it is written. We will also ask local police to keep vigil on main roads at night to ensure protesters face no harassment," said an officer. General security has also been beefed up in the city ahead of Independence Day, senior officers said. "Adequate measures have been taken for the Independence Day programme on Red Road on Friday. All entry and exit points of Kolkata have been kept under surveillance. All units have been briefed on the security plan," said an officer. Vigil has been tightened around Red Road, and traffic will be suspended on the stretch from 10 pm on Friday. "We will have to be on our toes. The stretch has been divided into 20 sectors under the charge of a deputy commissioner-level officer," he added. About 500 CCTV cameras will keep watch on the 2 km radius of the programme, including Park Street, Esplanade, Outram Road, Kidderpore Road, and some port areas.
