Kothamangalam case: SIT may arraign accused's parents
Kochi: The special investigation team (SIT) probing the death of a 23-year-old woman, who alleged in her suicide note that her boyfriend compelled her to convert religion, is likely to include his family members as accused. A nine-member SIT, led by Muvattupuzha DSP, is investigating the case. Her boyfriend, Rameez, 24, was arrested on charges of sexual intercourse through deceitful means and abetment to suicide under BNS. "Our investigation now is focused on Rameez's parents as well as a friend of the accused, Sahad, named in the woman's suicide note. Whether more relatives were involved is also under probe. We are trying to confirm if they abetted the suicide in any way. A report to add them as accused will be filed after questioning them," said a senior officer, adding that efforts were on to trace the family members who were at large. The family has demanded a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA). They have sent letters to the chief minister and the state police chief demanding an NIA probe. The woman's mother has raised suspicion of her daughter becoming a victim of an attempted forceful conversion by the accused. The woman's mother has alleged that her daughter was locked up by the accused and his family in their house, where she was physically assaulted. Meanwhile, police maintain that prima facie there was no organized effort to forcefully convert her and that the demand to convert was made as part of marriage discussions between the families. Death of woman in Kothamangalam: SIT likely to arraign parents of the accused
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of a 23-year-old woman at Kothamangalam is likely to arraign the parents of the accused, Rameez, as well. The investigation team, led by the Muvattupuzha Deputy Superintendent of Police ( continues to keep its action under the wrap though it is reliably learnt that the parents may be charged based on the revelations in the suicide note, reportedly written by the victim. The note alleged that Rameez through his family forced her for religious conversion as a precondition for marrying her. The victim was found hanging in her house at Kothamangalam on Saturday (August 09, 2025). Initially, the Kothamangalam police registered a case of unnatural death. However, the police stumbled upon the suicide note during the preparation of Mahassar on Sunday, based on which Rameez was arrested the next day. Though there were reports that the accused's parents would be summoned for questioning, the police haven't made any move yet. Kin's allegation The SIT was constituted after the police came under pressure as the kin of the victim and right wing political parties alleged that the woman was a victim of attempted forceful religious conversion. The Kothamangalam police, which initially investigated the case, had ruled that out, as they found it to be a case of a failed affair. Dissatisfied with the police investigation, the family of the victim petitioned the Chief Minister on Tuesday (August 12,2025) and the State Police Chief demanding that a probe be conducted by the National Investigation Agency. They accused the police of charging only lenient clauses against the accused and demanded that he and his parents be charged for attempted forceful religious conversion. Statements being collected The SIT has been collecting statements from friends, relatives and others who qualify as witnesses and sifting through the Call Detail Records of the victim and the accused. The investigation team is likely to get the custody of the accused by Monday (August 18, 2025). The accused was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means etc), 108 (abetment to suicide), and 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) on charges that he slapped her. SIT likely to get custody of accused in Kothamangalam woman's death case by Monday
The nine-member special investigation team (SIT) led by Muvattupuzha Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) constituted to probe the death of a 23-year-old woman in Kothamangalam took stock of the progress of the probe on Wednesday. The focus is now on collecting statements from friends, relatives, and others who qualify as witnesses and sifting through the call detail records of the victim and the accused. The investigation team is likely to get the custody of the accused by Monday. Notwithstanding the clamour for arraigning the parents of the accused, Rameez, who has since been arrested and remanded in judicial custody for alleged abetment to suicide and attempted forcible religious conversion, the investigation team has not summoned them yet. 'We found enough evidence for charging the accused with abetment to suicide, sexual relationship through deceitful means, and voluntarily causing hurt, based on which he was arrested. As for the allegations against the parents, we will look into them during the course of our investigation,' said the police. The SIT was constituted after the police came under pressure from parents of the victim and right-wing political parties who dubbed the deceased as a victim of attempted forcible religious conversion. The Kothamangalam police, who initially probed the case, had ruled that out as they found it to be a case of a failed affair. Dissatisfied with the police investigation, the family of the victim on Tuesday petitioned the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief demanding a probe by the National Investigation Agency. They accused the police of invoking lenient charges against the accused and demanded that he and his parents be charged for attempted forcible religious conversion. The victim was found hanging in her house at Kothamangalam on Saturday (August 9, 2025). Initially, the Kothamangalam police registered a case for unnatural death. However, they stumbled up on a note, reportedly written by the victim, during the preparation of mahazar on Sunday, based on which Rameez was arrested the next day. The accused was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means etc), 108 (abetment to suicide), and 115 (voluntarily causing hurt). Forced to covert by boyfriend, Kerala woman commits suicide
NEW DELHI: The family of a 23-year-old woman from Kothamangalam in Kerala, who committed suicide, alleging sexual abuse and forced religious conversion by her boyfriend on the promise of marriage, has sought an NIA probe into the incident. The Kothamangalam police on Monday (Aug 11) detained Rameez Mohammad for alleged abetment of suicide of his partner, Sona Eldhose. He and his family have been accused of harassing the deceased to convert her before marriage. The woman's mother has written to the chief minister and the state police chief, demanding an NIA probe into the suicide of her daughter. She stated in the letter that her daughter committed suicide due to an attempt to convert her to Islam. The family also accused the police of registering a case under weak sections. It has stated that they suspect the involvement of religious extremist terrorist organisations in the attempts of forced conversion. Her mother points out in the letter that their daughter met Rameez while studying in a college and was later subjected to physical torture, detention, and mental torture on the pretext of a marriage promise. The girl was told to convert if she wanted to get married and live in the family house of the accused. The family points out in the letter that the girl's suicide note clearly states that she was locked in a room at Rameez's house in Panayikulam, Aluva, and that he, his family, and many others forced her to convert and tortured her mentally and physically. Sona Eldhose, a resident of Puthupady in Kothamangalam and a TTC student at an institute in Muvattupuzha, was found dead at her residence at around 2pm on Saturday. Initially, the Kothamangalam Police registered a case of unnatural death. However, the police stumbled upon a suicide note, reportedly written by the deceased during the preparation of mahazar on Sunday. The suicide note reportedly revealed that the deceased was allegedly harassed to undergo religious conversion by Rameez and his family. Sona was also allegedly physically assaulted, according to the suicide note. Meanwhile, a 10-member team has been appointed to investigate the suicide of Sona. The investigation will be led by the Muvattupuzha DySP. The police have reportedly concluded that the young woman committed suicide due to severe neglect from her boyfriend Ramees after she refused to convert to Islam. The BJP has claimed that the death of the 23-year-old woman is a case of 'love jihad'. BJP Kerala vice-president Shone George alleged that similar incidents are occurring across Kerala and urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to order an impartial investigation into the incident. - The Statesman/ANN

Kothamangalam suicide: Woman's family seeks NIA probe, claims she's victim of attempted forced conversion
Kochi: The family of a deceased 23-year-old woman from Kothamangalam, who alleged in her suicide note that her boyfriend compelled her to convert, has demanded a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA). This comes even as Ernakulam rural police have formed a nine-member special investigation team, led by Muvattupuzha DSP, to investigate her death. Her boyfriend, Rameez (24), who was arrested on Monday, is in judicial custody and the investigation team is expected to seek his custody soon. The woman's mother has written to CM Pinarayi Vijayan and state police chief demanding an NIA probe. In the letter, she raised suspicion that her daughter was the victim of an attempted forced conversion by the accused. She alleged that her daughter was confined in the accused's house by him and his family, where she was physically assaulted. She also claimed that the charges invoked by police against Rameez were "not strong". The Kothamangalam police have booked the accused under Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means, etc.) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), after a friend of the deceased corroborated that the accused had slapped her. Police are also trying to track down additional witnesses to record their statements. Police are yet to serve summons to Rameez's parents to question them, amid demands to book them for abetment. Meanwhile, police sources said the autopsy report confirmed hanging as the cause of death and also substantiated charges under Section 69 of BNS. However, the investigation team maintains that, so far, evidence points to a love affair gone sour rather than a concerted effort to convert religion. Police said the duo were batchmates at a college in Aluva and had decided to marry, but Rameez recently backtracked and even blocked her on WhatsApp. The woman was found hanging in her house in Kothamangalam on Saturday. Police recovered a suicide note, presumably written by the victim, containing serious accusations that the accused compelled her to convert and subjected her to cruelty. Meanwhile, the Syro-Malabar Church's media commission took up the issue, claiming in a Facebook post that the "real religious conversion" was happening in Kerala, not in Chhattisgarh. It added that it was unfortunate young women still could not identify religious extremists who exploit pure emotions like love to cheat. The commission also urged political outfits to oppose all practices that go against secularism. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
